The opening section of The Alchemy of Air by Thomas Hager tells the story of the saltpeter mines of the Atacama Desert and it's role in some important events in South American history. It's only a part of the book, and only a part of South American history, but it's really well told.

Also, you should definitely check out One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. It is considered a modern classic.

The Lost City of Z A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann is also very popular now because it is being made into a movie.

If you like general history books, try Norman Davis's Europe. It's as sweeping as it gets. In terms of specific countries, Shirer's The The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is or course a classic on Germany in the Twentieth Century between the wars, while Christopher Clark's Iron Kingdom will help you understand the origins of the German nation. Barbara Tuchman's The Proud Tower covers the period from 1890 to the first world war and is extremely well regarded. Natasha's Dance by Orlando Figes is fairly recent and covers Russian history. Paul Johnson does a great job covering both American and European History. His A History of the American People is the standard one volume history of the USA. Thomas Pakenham's The The Scramble for Africa covers the European colonization of Africa.

Thanks for your reply. I would love to recommend a few books. I will say the book you bought "Decent into Chaos" by Ahmed Rashid is a very good book. Well written and very informative, not just about Afghanistan but Central Asia & Pakistan. He also wrote a book called "Taliban" which a lot of the U.S. Military leaders & Politicians read after the war started. There are many other very good books but unfortunately this is my first time posting anything. I'm new to this and need some help. As you noticed I don't have pictures. Could you walk me through how to put them on a post. I tried "add book/author" but each time I tried it just left writing but no picture. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. Once I figure it out I will send you some books I really like. One last thing you said you worked in Afghanistan. If you don't mind me asking, what did you do?

Hello! I happily stumbled upon this group today. I was attracted to the Presidents series, as I have recently taken to reading nonfiction political works. I have quite a few nonfiction books on my TBR list, but feel like I need a little help getting started on them. I am also a life long history reader. I fell in love with history while in the 5th grade, learning/reading about the US Civil War. Recently I have been attracted to WWI and WWII related nonfiction. I am exciting to get involved with this group and join some of the monthly reads. I must say, a quick glance at this group is a bit intimidating, due to the large amount of material here.
