Hello, I'm Adam. Glad to be in the History Book Club. I live in Mount Pleasant, SC just outside of Charleston. I'm generally a private person and don't have much experience with online discussion groups, but I'm interested in reading other people's opinions/thoughts on important topics. Hello History Book Club,At UCLA I majored in history and I share your love of reading great history.
As a history buff, I am still getting over the bravura "Cleopatra: A Life" by Stacy Schiff and her poignant assessment that Cleopatra helped her people, all dreading the growing dominance of the Roman Empire, to believe that what was their country's dusk was a dawn.
Original sources fascinate me; I cannot get enough. To my mind, one of the best books to rely almost entirely upon original sources for most of the text is the fabulous history of the silent film era by Kevin Brownlow, called "The Parade's Gone By...."
Other favorite historians include Dr. Brian Fagan, Dr. Jared Diamond and Mark Kurlansky.
I am interested in California history. I am intrigued by works interlacing environmental science and history, and have a fascination for ethnobotany.
Looking forward to getting to know everyone and to hearing about more books that I will be unable to resist. We are so blessed to live in such a culturally rich era.

Please also note that we wrote you a personal note with all sorts of helpful links including one to the Mechanics of the Board thread which is a place that can help you get used to doing the required citations for books and authors with ease.
We add the book cover first when available (and you have done that successfully - thank you) and then we manually type in the word by with a space before and after the word, then we add the author's photo if available and then the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text. If the author's photo is not available at the end we add (no photo).
I have done the corrected citation on the thread I recommended and posted your request appropriately in the correct location. The welcome thread is not the place for those requests.

I am visually impaired and rely on audio for my reading pleasure. History is one of my passions, in particular U.S. History. Hi All,I am in college currently; and, I have found that reading for leisure makes reading textbooks more interesting, easier to accomplish, and gives me context to supplement theory with history (making the reading more interesting).
I am from the U.S.
The problem I have with history books is that there is not much history I do not enjoy learning.
I joined the group, because I do not have the time to commute to a book club in person, and I enjoy the added dialogue a book club provides.

I don't think I've ever commented in a group before, so I hope I do this correctly. Personally, I am a long-time reader of both historical fiction and nonfiction history. My dad is a historical research scientist, and I spent the 1970s and 80s living in places as diverse as what is now Papua New Guinea and more normal places such as Romania. Life led me to homeschooling my six children. Not surprisingly, given my own education, I educate my kids using a whole book method--no textbooks. We also base all of our curriculum around a chronological history study. My hope is to be able to tap into the deep well of knowledge that the members here have in order to find excellent narrative nonfiction and accurate historical fiction covering areas that my kids are studying or will be studying. There are many books written for young people along these lines, but I am discovering that my high schoolers respond better to materials targeting an adult audience. As an example, my sixteen year old is currently devouring Conn Iggulden's series on Genghis Khan and his descendants while concurrently reading Jack Weatherford's Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World. I have a couple of specific areas that the kids want to delve into for which I would like some suggestions. If you could let me know how and where I can go about doing that, I'd be most appreciative!

Hello fellow History Nerds! I have been interested in history since I was a very young boy. It started with visual imagery, I loved visiting historic sites and seeing historic imagery in books and on tv. I soon progressed to the written word and haven't stopped since. Not only do I like history books, but newspaper and magazine articles, journals, and any other source I can find. My interests fluctuate over time, one day it might be the Spartans and a month later I'm fascinated by the French Revolution. I always return to two main areas, World War II and The American Revolution. Not surprisingly I became a history teacher, might as well get paid for your passion!
