ARCHIVE - PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ~
Hello everyone, my name is Sarai, from the U.S.Like everyone else, I fell in love with reading about history as a child.
My favorite periods off the top of my head are ancient history (Egypt, Rome, Greece), medieval (England, Spain, Italy), renaissance, gilded age. Some interesting figures: Hatshepsut, Nefertiti, Ramses, Cleopatra VII, Cleopatra Selene II, Augustus, Isabella I of Castile and her children, I could go on forever...
What a nice introduction, David. We welcome you to The History Book Club. We have a variety of folders which may interest you. There are many topics for you to peruse and we have discussions on lots of different books. Hope you can join in.
Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in this topic:

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.
When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Hello my name is Adam and I live in California, USA. and I am 27. I am both a grad student (history) and a high school history teacher. I've always found history fascinating; being able to look at different cultures and learning why people and societies are the way they are. I am glad to be in this group, as I hope I can find some non traditional history books for my students to read(US, world history, American government), as well as history books for my interests as well (largely East Asian History; China, Japan, Korea). Currently I am reading
by
James W. Loewen and
by
Ronald Takaki (for my 11th grade US history students). I look forward to seeing what this group has to offer, and of course contributing whenever I can.
Hello, I'm Ragan. I am from Texas. I am 26 years old and in the process of applying to grad school for library science. I enjoy reading classics, fantasy, historical fiction, and history. I enjoy reading about the Tudors and other royal families and about turbulent times in history such as the French and Russian revolutions. I studied anthropology for my first two years of college, so I am also interested in reading books related to the subjects of anthropology and archaeology.
Hey everyone! I'm Lisa, and I'm from Maine.
I am introducing myself to you all on this rainy, autumn morning.
I never read as a child, and love to read now.
I collect books at Goodwill, lawnsales, etc.
I love getting cozy at the end of the day with a good book.
History is one of the subjects that I am just starting to be interested in.
Thanks so much for letting me join your group.
I hope to learn so much through the suggested reads.

Hi, my name is Michel. I am from Brazil and start reading books since i was about 10. Now i am 37 and, recently, i started enjoying non-fictional history books. I like to read biographies and books describing the lives of ordinary people over a period of history. I also like reading about ancient peoples (Greeks, ...), wars, and how countries have evolved over the years.I am happy to have found this group where I hope to find great recommendations for next readings.

Hey - I am William Pettit from Atlanta, GA. Thank you for allowing me to join the group. My future father in law is in love with George Washington and figured it would be a good idea to expand my knowledge on the founding fathers and our American history. I enjoy history/biographies and have started to expand my interest into architecture/design. The House Tells the Story: Homes of the American Presidents by Adam Van Doren and David McCullough
Hello everybody! My name is Chloe ane I am from Hong Kong. I have always loved history because it is always intertwined with other principles and areas (just like literature, which I have done as an undergraduate degree). In terms of history, I am currently reading Roberts and Westad's The New Penguin History of The World, Robert's The Penguin History of Europe and Axworthy's A History of Iran: Empire of the Mind because I am now pursuing a degree in European Studies and would like to see how different narratives complement/contradict. I look forward to interacting with everybody and reading more relating to this field - or any other field really :) x

Hey all! I'm Colleen, and I'm in California. I actually got hooked on reading as a kid with the Fantasy/Sci-fi genres. I got into history in general because of a professor I had at a local community college. (I love talking about her class, so here you go:) It was just American History from Columbus landing thru the 1900's, which NEVER interested me. Like, ever. But she kept the class alive and did what she could to make events relevant and relatable to us, and she offered a ton of extra credit in the forms of mock trials and debates, whether or not we agreed with the "side" we were on. It was fascinating, and it was what first sparked an interest in history for me. That interest was bolstered by an online Philosophy class I took a few years after, and how it related to politics and government and people groups as a whole. Just awesome stuff.I will admit, though, I have never actually read a historical book outside of a textbook or a required reading for a class (and I didn't necessarily read those, either), but the interest is definitely there, which is why I've joined the group. :)
As far as what kinds of history themes I'm interested in, there's definitely a bit of curiosity surrounding American Politics (can't imagine why...), as well as an interest in European history and scientific stuff, too, like about the Space Race or what led to the first models of modern-day devices and technologies. I don't know, I guess I'm still getting my feet wet in this whole area, so I'm sure I'll find out that there's so much that I don't even know is out there. Looking forward to it, though!
Hey everyone! Happy to join this group. I'm Yoko from China. Now I study history MA in the UK. I very much like the period of Tudor and had my undergraduate dissertation on American Black women's self-consciousness, but still dunno which topic can be focused on my Master dissertation.Recently I'm reading Alfred W. Crosby's Ecological Imperialism (kinda essential reading for my course). Hope in this group get some new idea about history and recommendation from all your guys!!!
Sorry me Yoko again. But I can't find the link or any button on the top right of comment box. On my new comment page, it only has 'cancel' on the top left and 'post' on the top right, nothing else. So I just cannot add link or author or books I mentioned.

Hello everyone. My name is Rebekah and to say I love books is an understatement. I will read anything that piques my interest and while I've been mainly focused on fiction I chose this group to help expand my horizons into non fiction. I do love history as a topic but I haven't narrowed down which specific time period would be my favorite. I'm hoping to be introduced to some interesting biographies as well. This is also my first foray into a Goodreads book club so I will try and hold up my end with discussions and suggestions. I usually just read whatever I can find but I'm looking for more inspiration and possibly more structure to fit more reading in. Thank you for having me and I'm looking forward to reading with you all!

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.
When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Hi everybody. My name is Kim and I hope I'm doing this right. I signed up for Goodreads a couple months ago and so far have figured out how to mark what I've read and want to read, but everything else is a great mystery with much difficulty for me. (I won't tell you how long it took me to figure out how to leave this post). I had a stroke in my late 30's, while enjoying a career as a clinical social worker here in the US who traveled a lot for my job, my child, and for genealogy, and loved it. As a result I had to retire and spent 3 years with a laptop next to me learning how to read again, but I have trouble with other things, so anyone who could give me kindergarten level lessons on how to add shelves and to make a profile and a profile section to my profile would be my hero.My dad passed away in May and was so proud to serve in the Navy during WWII, so military history of that war and the Civil War and the Revolution are part of the reason I'm interested in this group (also helps with genealogy).
Other history areas I hope this group will help me with are Irish, Russian/Romanov, German/Prussian, and who knows from there. You can tell I like history, plain. I'm excited to see where this goes, and apologize for such a long passage.
Wonderful introduction, Kim. Special thanks to your late father for his service during WWII......the greatest generation. I think you will find that we have many topics which will catch your fancy, so let's start with some of your favorites.American Civil War
The Second World War
European History

Hello, everyone. I am Scott and come from South Korea. Actually, I am not good at English, so please excuse my poor English. I started to read English books last year just to improve my English. But as I read more books, I became to be a book-lover. And recently I realized that I am interested in history. So that's why I am in here, this history book club.
I would like to read books about history together and share what we think or feel with each other. :)
Welcome, Scott. We are so glad you joined us from South Korea......and your English is just fine. There is a lot to see and do here so I suggest that you start by browsing our home page and find some topics that may interest you.

Hi, My name is Sandi Breland and I live in Atlanta GA USA. I am a GIA gemologist and dealer of antique jewelry. I love ancient, antique and period pieces. I so appreciate the craftsmanship, materials, stones and purpose of each piece from crown jewels to the simplest materials and design. My interest is mostly in medieval history - especially domestic and social history.

Hi, my name is Nikoleta, I study in Vienna and one of my high level subjects is History. I find it fascination and love reading about it, discussing it and mostly also watching historical movies :)
I'm James Foster. I have a semi-regular reading rotation that includes a regular history book every few weeks (at least), hence my interest in this group! I am particularly fond of ancient history, intellectual history, and American history. But, honestly, I just look for good writing about influential people, places, or ideas. I haven't a clue how many history books I've read, but the ones that remain in our home library fill more than a wall! And then there's kindle...
A warm welcome Nikoleta. You are among like-minded people here at the HBC......we are all history lovers!!You might want to begin with a visit to our home page at the link below where you will find many topics that may be of interest to you.

I wish to join the history book club simply because I've always been attracted by this matter and I'd like to share this passion with others. I grew up reading again and again the timeless Roman and Greek classics enjoying the wisdom of Cicero or the deeds of Cesar and his legions, the conquests of Alexander. Is there any fiction romance that can be more thrilling than History? Of course to enjoy this matter we need good books and intelligent historians! I do agree with Giambattista Vico's idea, considering history not a collection of data, or a means to show off personal culture, but as the very theater where human spirit can fully express itself, in positive or negative, at individual or social level. Then, as regard any historical event, more than in knowing the fact itself I'm interested to understand "why" and "who" made it. After all the difference between good and not so good historians is precisely in such an ability to find a greater pattern, a pattern that should be useful to better understand our present and our future.
