Peter. Thank you for your review. I would like to point out, however, that when I wish to communicate information to a fellow author in one of these groups, such as spelling or grammatical errors, I am careful to do so by personal message, away from public gaze. We cannot lose sight of the fact that a Goodreads review is a place where members of the public go to research a book before buying. I think they would be surprised to find such detailed writing advice like you wrote in the review of "In a House in Yemen"
I don't have an issue with the score - everyone is entitled to their opinion, I just think that a Goodreads review is not an appropriate place for advice such as yours.

A big thank you to F.S. for her very fair and even handed review of Fractured. It was an experiment posting a short story prequel here – but I'm really glad that I did. We developed Fractured as a screenplay first before the short story. It's currently in development. I take your point that the writing style is therefore a little underwritten and that we don't explain what fracking is. So some food for thought there... To answer Peter's question - what did I learn? That the review process is invaluable. So thank you to all my reviewers it's been a really worthwhile experience. Alison LN

Feedback on the review process: I think that I have received some excellent reviews for my book and welcomed the criticism as well as the praise for The Lord's Poet.

It is a very difficult process putting your work in front of an audience that may not normally read your genre, but I think there are advantages, because all writing should be accessible to whoever picks it up. The only advantage of genre specific review would be that you would have a better idea of what your target audience might think of the book.

Reviewing the four books was a great experience and I have experienced highs and lows. I am even glad that I read the book that I gave the lowest rating to, as it did reveal information about a group of people I had very little understanding of.

I think the non-reciprocal part of this arrangement has also been ideal for the honesty of the reviews. I have engaged in reciprocal reviews in the past but i do not think that I could do so again. I will probably be back in a future group, but I have a few books waiting to be read at home, so I might give it some time.

Thanks to everyone for writing the material that I have read and for taking the time to review what I have written.

I enjoyed this group too. This was a very different group and I say this because of the different tastes. Kevin had an ancient English book and a couple, as authors, had an environmentally themed book. Peter Prasad delighted us, as always with his witty and insightful comments. It's been fun!

So, Peter, did that qualify as an off-the-cuff statement?

Actually, I have added chapters to the beginning of The Four Kings to introduce Amanda earlier, and show what kind of person she was at the beginning. And I've hired someone in economics to beef up the facts and arguments for the political debates.

Sleeveless comment, Scott. Remember the opening of Butch Cassedy & The Sundance Kid? The camera was on Redford's face for half a minute before he said anything. People need to know who the hero is and who to root for right off the bat. Readers are way conditioned by TV and movies (Car chase scene every 6 minutes). They'll forgive typos, misplaced pronouns and awkwardisms if THE STORY MOVES.

It's all about story, not modern psycho-babble or processing your writer's angst. It's a competitive world, so bite back. GUT-CHECK GREEN is free this weekend. It hit #10 Kindle Terrorism already, and I have not yet begun to spam. Please, have at it:
