I most likely read this book in late 2013 or early 2014. I don't think it was more than a few years old. A young woman who teaches and plays the violin (I think it was the violin anyway) mostly keeps to herself in her small town because the people are scared of her. Men are drawn to her because of her powers - either they want to kill her or take her. Her best friend is male. This young man's father used to be the commander of an army but is now bound to a wheel chair. (view spoiler)[It turns out that the king broke the commander's legs when it was discovered the queen and commander were having an affair. (hide spoiler)] The heroine's father died at the paws of one of his favorite caged, wild pets (maybe a jaguar). (view spoiler)[The heroine actually set this up because she hated her mind controlling father. The father was also close to the king and has done terrible things. He is the main reason people (including the daughter) are afraid of anyone with mind controlling powers. (hide spoiler)] The heroine is taken to the castle accompanying the prince and a large group of distrusting soldiers. She plays the violin/fiddle in the evening. Someone breaks her violin at some point. She finds respite from castle life in a building outside of the castle that may have been the queens private house. A woman cleans the house and eventually befriends the heroine, but not for quite a while. The heroine takes charge of a younger girl and keeps her in this house. Someone threatens the girl and woman of that house which brings the heroine over. The heroine is then kidnapped and taken to some house out of the city where people are being controlled to do horrible things. She finds a friend butchered and manages to escape the house on horseback. Some wanderers find her and help her recover from injuries. The castle overlooks a beautiful river with a rainbow waterfall.

Thank you! It's funny, because before I posted I looked at that book and thought, "I don't remember Fire playing a violin or her dad being attacked. It must not be Fire that I'm thinking of." lol!
