This was a kid's novel/chapter book that I read sometime around 1985 or 1986. It may have been a new book then, but could have been any time after the mid 1960s I suppose - it didn't seem dated at all or old fashioned at the time. All I can really remember about it is a boy lost his best friend suddenly when the friend had an allergic reaction to a bee sting. I think he may have blamed himself for not reacting fast enough - maybe he thought his friend was faking? There were some black and white illustrations inside, and I remember one quite vividly - the boy sitting on his father's lap being hugged. He seemed very big to be being held in that way and I remember it making me feel so sad - I was about ten years old, and I think the characters must have been as well and that image just made it so clear how upset the boy was to need to be held that way.
