Amanda (goodreadscomamanda_hamm) | 5 comments Thanks for this article. I have long been interested in the Shroud of Turin. Personally, I find it's connection to the Sudarium of Oviedo most compelling. The Magis Center has extensive coverage of this.

Frances Richardson | 73 comments Have scientists offered credible examples of what the Shroud might be, or how it was made, if it isn’t authentic?

message 304: by Manuel (last edited Jan 22, 2021 01:19AM) (new)

Manuel Alfonseca | 378 comments No, they haven't. Catholic scientists are divided, some think the Shroud is genuine, some think it may not be authentic. Atheist scientists think it is false. But atheists MUST believe that the Shroud must be false, as they don't believe that Jesus resurrected.

Frances Richardson | 73 comments Manuel, I have been trying to understand where the Higgs Boson fits in. Very simply put, is it something like the most elementary building block?

Thank you, when you have time.

message 349: by Manuel (last edited Nov 26, 2021 11:50PM) (new)

Manuel Alfonseca | 378 comments No, it isn't the most elementary building block. In the 1960s Peter Higgs proposed a theory to explain the existence of mass in those particles that have it. Called the Higgs field theory, it also predicted the existence of a new particle, the Higgs boson, which seems to have been detected in 2013. Both the Higgs field and the Higgs bosom were incorporated into the standard particle physics theory, currently in effect.

However, according to this theory, neutrinos should have no mass. It was later found that all three types of neutrinos can transform into one another, for those detected coming from the sun are only a third of what they should be. The others, presumably, have changed species. This means that neutrinos must have mass, contrary to Higgs theory, although it would be very small.

So the standard particle theory is incomplete, for there are several things (this is just one) that it can't explain.
