SOLVED. Sci-Fi books about man/machine partners [s]

I'm looking for books about a "soldier of fortune" type hero and his AI partner/spaceship. I read the paperback in the 2000's, I think. Any info on author, title(s) and protagonist welcome. This is my first post, feedback welcome.

There's a series by Anne McCaffery that has disembodied brains powering spaceships - so not quite an AI, but the effect is very similar.

Well, darn. There's so many books with an AI powered spaceship as a side issue it's hard to narrow it down.
