I read this a few months ago and found it to be very good - a true benchmark book for its genre!

Cindy (newtomato) | 195 comments Thanks guys, I'm about a quarter through We, and it's really, really good.

message 3205: by Shovelmonkey1 (new)

Shovelmonkey1 | 190 comments I've just started The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood. Not feeling it so far - it is a book that seems a bit dated to be honest but i'm only 60 pages in so i'm not giving in just yet.

message 3206: by Drew (last edited Nov 17, 2010 06:39AM) (new)

Drew Billingsley | 58 comments I am starting on The Corrections. I avoided this when it was published for being overhyped, overexposed and overrated. After reading (and loving) Everything Is Illuminated, which I had avoided for the same reason, I decided to give Franzen a try. I am liking it quite a bit so far.

I am trying to be a little bit less of a book snob-- Just because something is hyped/popular doesn't mean that it can't be great.

message 3207: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 251 comments Last night I started The Bridge on the Drina. Chapter 1 was a little dry, which I feared, but Chapters 2 and 3 are showing signs of life.

Deanne | 681 comments Jennifer
Stick with the bridge on the Drina, it does get better.
Started Belle du Seigneur by Albert Cohen, just getting into it but finding the size of the book is daunting.

message 3210: by Mike (new)

Mike | 78 comments Well, I've taken the plunge and have started reading "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy. I've always wanted to read it but the sheer length of the book kept me at arms length. I'm at about page 100 and so far I'm into it.

I've looked at quite a few reviews on this site for The Shipping News and they are all generally either in the loved it or hated it vein. I'm interested to find out which side of the fence i'll come down on!

message 3222: by [deleted user] (new)

I just started The Fest of the Goat by Mario Vargas Llosa for my book club. We wanted to try something by the Nobel Prize Winner.

I don't know how i will get through it though, I have read way too many novels dealing with Trujillo. i took a class in college where we read five in six weeks so I don't have much patience for them

Sounds awesome Lauli!

message 3231: by Drew (new)

Drew Billingsley | 58 comments Started The Idiot by Dostoevsky. I noticed it is an upcoming book club read, but it has been on my shelf for a while and I would like to get it started.

I also started Memoirs of Martinus Scriblerus by Arbuthnot. It is a very quick read (100 pages), and reminiscent of Tristram Shandy or Jonathan Swift. I had never heard of it before I saw it on the list. I am really surprised, as it is very funny--and would have made a good addition to an English lit syllabus.
