Anna wrote: "Primo Levi | [b:The Drowned and the Saved|6176|The Drowned and the Saved (Abacus Books)|Primo Levi|http://photo.goodread..."Have you read anything by Levi before? I read his Survival At Auschwitz (on list as If This Is A Man) last year and it was really amazing.
I've just started Slaughterhouse Five by Vonnegut. I'm already onto page 104. It is sad and intriguing - I'm getting the impression that he is counseling himself.

BTW - isn't listening to books on tape cheating? You aren't 'reading' it.
I am reading THE NEW YORK TRILOGY by Paul Auster. Managed the first two chapters last night. I have the feeling that this book will take a while.
Linda wrote: "Just started Seize the Day by Saul Bellow. Looks like it will be easy reading and it's fairly short. I think it was originally on the list but then dropped. Anyone have a recommendation for a diffe..."Bellow is my favorite author. If you like Seize the Day, the other works that are most like this one are Ravelstein or Mr. Sammler's Planet. Personally, my favorite work by Saul Bellow is Henderson the Rain King. It definately has the most humor :)
Chel wrote: "I started Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston."Chel, let us know what you think. Such a beautiful book.
i just picked up city of god the other day and intend to get started on it after work today. opinions feelings on the title?
Yrinsyde wrote: BTW - isn't listening to books on tape cheating? You aren't 'reading' it.It's only cheating if you listen to the abridged version. Some books are actually better on audio...
I've just started Crash by JG Ballard. I'm on page 28 and so far, I'm finding it rather creepy. Has anyone else read this?
I just started Life Before Man by Margaret Atwood. Its not on the list, but I've already read all of her books that are and I like to throw a non-list book into the mix at least once a month.

Yes, this was a wonderful book showing aspects of African American culture in Florida in the early 20th century and a great finding oneself story of the main character's quest for love. Neale Hurston is a great author.
I'm just starting The Grapes of Wrath-John Steinbeck. I know I read it in High School, but I don't remember very much of it......
The Melancholy of Resistance by Laszlo Krasznahorkai. I'm only about 35 pages in but so far it's kind of slow going.
Niche wrote: "Life of Pi by Yann Martel"I loved this book! Just got done recommending it to a guy at work.
Just started the Red Queen. For some reason I have developed a facination with books written about the Oriental culture at the turn of the 1800s...they were so ridgid, strict in their ways. More so I find than the East.
Adam - thanks for the comment about Bellow a while back. I will probably read something else by him, perhaps Henderson.Recently started The Bluest Eye by Morrison. A quick and rather melancholy read so far.
Jennifer - if you like stories about the Chinese culture, have you read any of Pearl Buck's works? If not, I highly recommend The Good Earth or Peony, and I'm sure her others are good as well.
Isabel Allende's The House of the Spirits. Everyone compares her to Marquez, but I am enjoying her SO much more.
1984 by George OrwellIt's hard to believe that I actually haven't read this before. I'm really looking forward to it.

Kristi wrote: "I'm still working on The House in Paris, and last night I started [b:I'm Not Scared|1104..."I think you'll appreciate it so much more now...I know I did...enjoy it...
Just started Aesops fables, never read them all together like this, there are a ton that I have never heard of.Also continuing to plod through the Idiot.
Cynthia wrote: "Isabel Allende's The House of the Spirits. Everyone compares her to Marquez, but I am enjoying her SO much more."I too have really enjoyed Allende's works. I had read 2 of her other books .. "Daughter of Fortune" & "Ines of my Soul" prior to this one..and really enjoyed her colorful, richly detailed characters. I lived in Argentina for 5 years so her works truely came to life for me...
Lorena wrote: "Emma, by Jane Austen"I loved this book, I think it was because I was never sure how I was supposed to feel about Emma. Definitely one of the classics which has to be done!
