Also, concurrent to Maltese Falcon I just started and finished the only essay on the list, A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift. It was very good.

Have you read anything by Levi before? I read his Survival At Auschwitz (on list as If This Is A Man) last year and it was really amazing.

Bellow is my favorite author. If you like Seize the Day, the other works that are most like this one are Ravelstein or Mr. Sammler's Planet. Personally, my favorite work by Saul Bellow is Henderson the Rain King. It definately has the most humor :)

Yes, this was a wonderful book showing aspects of African American culture in Florida in the early 20th century and a great finding oneself story of the main character's quest for love. Neale Hurston is a great author.

Melissa Read Crash as undergrad. Kinda creepy. There's a movie version directed by David Cronenberg.

Jennifer Webb Richards Just started the Red Queen. For some reason I have developed a facination with books written about the Oriental culture at the turn of the 1800s...they were so ridgid, strict in their ways. More so I find than the East.

Linda Jennifer - if you like stories about the Chinese culture, have you read any of Pearl Buck's works? If not, I highly recommend The Good Earth or Peony, and I'm sure her others are good as well.

I too have really enjoyed Allende's works. I had read 2 of her other books .. "Daughter of Fortune" & "Ines of my Soul" prior to this one..and really enjoyed her colorful, richly detailed characters. I lived in Argentina for 5 years so her works truely came to life for me...
