Horror Aficionados discussion
Introduce Yourself!
Hello! I'm Kris and I'm fairly new to using Goodreads. (Honestly, this would have saved me so much time in keeping up the books I've read over the years. Haha)Growing up, I was more of a horror movie fan and never thought to dive in to reading horror. Now, reading horror gives me an even bigger appreciation for the horror genre.
Current favorite authors are Paul Tremblay, Grady Hendrix, Ania Ahlborn, and Nick Roberts.
I am always looking for more recommendations to add to my library. :)
@Kris: Welcome! That's so awesome, you came to a wonderful group. I love all those authors you mentioned, especially Grady Hendrix!I can't wait for "The Exorcist's House: Genesis" by Nick Roberts coming out in September. I actually have an ARC for that since I loved the original.
I have a recommendation for you! "Come Closer" by Sara Gran!
I have been a member of HA for some time now. My membership has been rewarding and the Moderators have always been very helpful to me when I had questions. My specific reading interests are horror and splatterpunk. This club features excellent selections of horror novels. My favorite feature of HA has been the Group Read Author Invites.

Thank you so much! I am very excited as well for the Exorcist's House: Genesis to come out! That is on my list to buy once it comes out.
I LOVE that book! It was short but it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I read it.
@LTJ: Aw thanks friend, and anytime! I LOVED The Eyes Are the Best Part. Something delicious (pun intended) about the "good for her trope" when it meets justice by visceral means. Just a fun and gross read for sure!LTJ wrote: "@Erika: Anytime, thanks for accepting my friend request! LoL ZOMG!!! Yeah, that's wild, I'm going to add that to my TBR... thanks for your awesome insight :-)
BTW! You have an awesome BookTok chan..."
@Kris: Anytime! Hell yeah, even though I have the ARC, I'm buying a copy in support of Nick Roberts since he's such an amazing horror author :-)Hell yeah! LoL Come Closer was such a fun, wild read. I'm so glad you also read and loved it :-)
@Erika: Anytime, my new friend! LoL The Eyes Are the Best Part had the BEST eye horror I've ever read in my life. That was excellent and I see what you did there with that pun :-P... get it? "see" what I did there? Badum tssssss
Hi everyone!!I'm Bryham. It's a pleasure to be here in this group full of people who love horror as much, or even more, than I do. As a statement of purpose, I can say that I love horror in all its forms with my soul. It doesn't matter if we're talking about: literature, movies, series, shorts, documentaries, short stories or novels. Maybe the root of this obsession is my connection with, since the very beginning of my life, the whole emotion of being scared about something (yeah, I'm basically admitting I used to be a big chicken hahaha).
Hello everyone! I'm Drina, and I'm thrilled to be here. I love all things horror and supernatural, be it books, movies, or anything in between, and I’m an aspiring writer in the genre as well. I’m excited to connect with fellow enthusiasts and discuss our shared interests!
@Drina: Welcome! You came to a wonderful group, please grab a virtual iced latte to the left in the skull mug and enjoy everything :-DWhat is your favorite horror book!??!!?
@LTJThank you so much! I’m loving the vibe already. And thanks for the latte in the skull💀 haha.
As for my favorite horror book, it’s tough to pick just one, but if I have to, probably “The Haunting of Hill House.” It’s the first horror book I ever read, and it made me fall in love with the genre. How about you? What’s your go-to horror read?
@Drina: I GOT YOU! You're so very welcome, but did you pick the iced or hot latte in the skull?!?!?!EXCELLENT choice, I love Shirley Jackson (RIP). She's incredible and to this day, The Haunting of Hill House is my all-time favorite haunted house novel. Even the TV show on Netflix is AMAZING!
All-time? IT by Stephen King. My go-to horror read? Anything written by Stephen King. Uncle Stevie is my all-time favorite author and everytime I read anything he writes, it connects with me on levels I can't even describe.
Horror is my happy place and Uncle Stevie makes it even better :-)
@LTJ: I went with the iced latte. Felt right for the moment!🧋💀 I completely agree—The Haunting of Hill House is a masterpiece. The Netflix adaptation is fantastic too. In fact, I think anything Mike Flanagan is involved in is genius. The man was made for horror.
And Stephen King is incredible! IT is such a classic, and I totally get why he’s your go-to. What would we do without his books, huh? Imagine if The Shining was never written.
@Drina: Great choice! Hell yeah it is a masterpiece, I plan to re-read it again probably in 2025. So many books, such little time, eh? That Netflix adaptation was next level! At first, I didn't like the direction it went in but then it did make sense and honestly, it kept things refreshing.Flanagan is indeed a genius, LoL ANYTHING he touches in horror is amazing :-)
Let me tell you, my new friend, I have no idea where I'd be in life if it weren't for Uncle Stevie. Back in May, I went through not one but two life-changing events, and having his new novel "You Like It Darker" there to help me get through things was beyond healing.
I'm proud to say I got through both and am in my final healing phase! That novel will FOREVER be engraved on me for 2024 since it helped me forget about what I went through, and I've been doing great. Between that, my support army of friends, therapy, staying busy with reading, losing 36 pounds thanks to exercise/strict diet, I'm the best version of myself :-)
I've never met Stephen King. I don't think I ever will but let me tell you, I feel I've known him my entire life since I first read IT as a teenager. LoL yeah, IMAGINE if his amazing wife Tabitha never took his draft of some little book named "Carrie" out of the garbage to support him in pursuing his dream?
LoL just wild to think what would have been but thank goodness. I know I'm not the only Constant Reader who he's impacted but yeah, I'm forever grateful for him and his incredible content!
@LTJ: Wow, thanks for sharing your story with me. It’s incredible how books and authors can impact our lives so deeply. I’m really glad to hear that you’re in such a positive place now and that Stephen King’s work helped you through those tough times.Re-reading The Haunting of Hill House sounds like a fantastic plan for 2025! I totally get the feeling of having so many books and so little time. For me, I anticipate spending more time writing than reading in 2025, much like this year.
And yes, I can’t imagine where horror would be without Stephen King, or if Tabitha hadn’t believed in him. The “what ifs” are wild to think about, but thankfully, they’re just that—what ifs.
Hello everyone! I'm Claudia, 36 and currently living in Switzerland. I love all things horror—books, movies, and especially Halloween. My TBR list is overflowing with horror novels, and I'm excited to explore them alongside this group. I'm really looking forward to reading together!
@Drina: You're very welcome, my new friend. Thank you for reading it and for the kind words. Oh hell yeah, books, authors, and connecting fellow readers (especially us horror readers) are amazing and have been very therapeutic for me :-)Thanks! It's such a great novel. That's so awesome you plan to spend more time writing than reading! Are you also a fellow writer? What do you write? I'm a professional sportswriter and editor and am finally working my dream job in sports media :-D
It's scary to think if King never became an author or if his wife never fished Carrie out of the trash. LoL truly wild indeed!
@Sycogirl: Welcome, Claudia! Wow, that's so awesome you're in Switzerland. New York here and you came to a wonderful group :-DWhat has been your favorite horror novel of all-time? What about in 2024 so far?
@LTJ: You’re welcome!Yes, I’m a writer too, currently working on a slow-burn supernatural horror book. I’m deep into editing at the moment, being the perfectionist that I am. I haven’t published anything yet, but this will be my first, and I’m aiming to have it out before the year ends. It’s been quite the journey!
Also, congrats on working your dream job in sports media! That sounds amazing. There’s nothing better than turning your passion into a career.
@Drina: Ohhhhhhhhh, that's so awesome!!! Please let me know when your first supernatural horror book is published, I'd love to read it :-)I've only done sports articles my entire life but I'm also dabbing into writing my first-ever horror short story via my Facebook Author Page. LoL I stopped writing in May due to those two life-changing events since, I'm sure you know, you can't write with a heavy mind. I'm going to get back into writing it again (I'm 10% done) starting in September. Happy writing and I'm so excited for you!!!
Thank you so much about working my dream job in sports media. Hell yeah, and I'm curious, would you say your dream career is to be an author?
@LTJ: Thank you! I’ll definitely let you know when it’s out. It’s great you’re trying your hand at horror with your short story. I completely understand needing a break during tough times. Glad you’re jumping back into it. Wish you all the best. Happy writing!
And yes, being an author is my dream career, or really, anything that would let me bring the stories in my mind to life—like filmmaking.
@Drina: Anytime, thank you!Oh yes, it's a completely different ballgame compared to sports articles but I'm up to the challenge. Thank you for your support, I'm so glad we connected and I'm so excited for you to become an author. When you become famous, I can be like ZOMG I remember her from Horror Aficionados!!! Happy writing to you as well!
That's so awesome, you have my utmost support. YOU. GOT. THIS.
@Drina: My pleasure! You're so very welcome and hell yeah, here's to us being future best-selling authors and remembering this moment :-)
