'Intimidated' might be a tad strong but I wonder if I'm outta my depth here? Yous lot are what I'd call 'Professional Readers'. What I mean by that is that I've no doubt whatsoever that most - if not all - of yous devour a book a week? More even?? Tho I've gone through many many novels (around 75% horror) over the years, I'm a very steady reader. Ha ha, no I don't mean placing my finger on and mouthing each word as I go... but I am a plodder. Also I'll just have hour-or-so sessions with a book rather than four or five hour stints. I'll wager that many of yous have read countless books in a single sitting? Will also add that I've not picked up a book in around a year. There's a pretty good reason for that which I may go into at another time but... yeah you'll have to forgive me that one.I guess I'm just saying bear with me. : )
Best writer for me is maybe gonna make folk yawn because of his popularity but it's gotta be King... by a stretch. Have been quite partial to Graham Masterton and James Herbert (to mention a couple of Brits if I'm being a tad patriotic) and... tho I have a couple of gripes with him... I've enjoyed many of Dean koontz's books. Gotta give a nod to the late Richard Laymon bless him.... you know EXACTLY what you're gonna get with him.... psycho killers, sex, a few laughs.... and err.. more sex! : )
Should give a nod to Peter Straub too. Apart from having a hand in the excellent Black House with King... he's done some crackers of his own. Floating Dragon anyone? Hellfire Club. Blue Rose Trilogy. And..... I'll shurrup now!!!

We all read at our own pace, even with our group reads, (and most go on for the entire month). No matter how fast or slowly you read, you are welcome here if you love horror!

I get that! My first real love book-wise was horror, but these days I'll read anything except for romance. :)
Char wrote: "I get that! My first real love book-wise was horror, but these days I'll read anything except for romance. :)"Ha ha I reckon we both singing from the same hymn sheet then. I'll pass on romance stuff. When I'm moonlighting from horror, I tend to read crime stuff (and the odd music biography re fave bands) but yeah, I'd give pretty much anything a go if it's not Daniele Steele and stuff of that ilk. I could be wrong but I feel that genre is perhaps the antithesis of horror? I could be way off the mark and maybe there's folk on here that read both.. it just feels that way to me.
Would just like to add.... this place feels a breath of fresh air. I've been wandering around cyberspace for quite a while (since Amazon pulled the plug on their forums) seeking chat sites and recently resorted to joining Facebook groups. With the odd exception, said FB groups are mostly monologues from folk agreeing or disagreeing with the OP. Not too much actual conversation. This looks like a different proposition altogether. I've been made feel welcome too. Not even checked out the other threads on here yet but looks like this's a busy place. Am most pleased for what it's worth.
Picky about prose quality in horror fiction? Let’s get acquainted… Thanks for adding me to the group. I’m new to Goodreads, and am especially keen to connect with readers and writers who value stylishly written prose in horror fiction, with a view to identifying and celebrating works of this type. If that sounds like your kind of thing, it would be great to hear from you.
Welcome to the jungle Sean (cue Slash doing that opening) - err I may not be the type of poster you seek as there's a few Richard Laymon books on my shelves. I am partial to a bit Lovecraft too tho if he rocks yer boat?

But I've had it so long it looks like I'm never going to shake it, so I've just accepted my condition and decided to track down fellow sufferers for some mutual commiseration...
Welcome Sean! I grew up reading Lovecraft--the books we had at home were Mom's Lovecraft and Poe collections.... I was the only one at school that could pronounce "Cthulhu" in Kindergarten, I'd wager.
