Horror Aficionados discussion
Introduce Yourself!
Both humor and horror require that the audience be caught offguard. Therefore a bait and switch can be effected.
Jon Recluse wrote: "Robert Bloch always said that humor and horror are flip sides of the same coin."A great way to put it.

Deep fried, bacon wrapped, jumbo Reese's Peanut Butter Cups :)"
I think I could get behind that.
Newbie David here, Senior citizen, worked in library for last 15 years but never read!!! Catching up on things now. For the past 6 months I've been reading 2 award winning books (Hugo, Edgar etc) and 2 classic books each month. I will be asking members for recommendations and help!! Tks, David
Welcome David! I have no idea if anything I’ve read recently has won any awards.. so classics? Ambrose Bierce!! Nathaniel Hawthorne 🖤
Char wrote: "Hello and welcome, David! How can you work in a library and not read?!"My boss use to say the same thing. It was a very small, slow library with plenty of free time for reading but I just could not get into it!!

Welcome to HA, David. I'm glad you're reading now! Maybe the library just didn't have the kind of books you enjoy.
Hey guys...I joined this ages ago and (embarrassed to say) forgot I was a part of the group. Spent some time cruising through the posts from various members. Seems like my kind of people. Book nerds, writers, pop culture junkies. My peeps. As for me, I'm a full-time writer. I write 2-4 novels per year in a variety of genres (horror, thrillers, mysteries, fantasies, science fiction). My adult stuff is mostly published by St. Martin's Griffin, Tor, Titan, and JournalStone. My YA and middle grade fiction is all with Simon & Schuster.
I also write comics (for Marvel, IDW and Dark Horse).
My vampire apocalypse series, V-WARS is in post-production at Netflix and the fist 10-episode season should air in late summer.
I'm from Philly originally but live in Del Mar, near San Diego.

Welcome back, Jonathan! :)
Welcome back, Jonathan! :)
Hello! Just joined the group yesterday. I'm just an avid reader of almost anything but prefer horror above all. I also read comics, which I also like dark & gritty or a really great story. I'm also an artist - when I'm not in a creative hole i can't crawl out of. I also love movies, Netflix, Hulu and I really enjoy wrestling. Some ladies like house wives of Kardashians, I like wrestling 😋
Is luv to make more freinds here with the same luv of reading & hoping to find some great recommendations.

Welcome Jen. BTW my family and I just watched the Royal Rumble last night. Didnt see the whole thing because I had I get up for work, but what we did see was decent,(Not as good as Take Over, but decent =-)..)
Hi, all! I've recently tried to stop being a wimp and get into horror after my SO convinced me to watch The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix and I LOVED it. So I've now started reading horror, alongside my usual science-fiction and fantasy. I'm so excited about Darcy Coates being a guest author for Feb because Craven Manor was on my TBR list and I look forward to reading it with everyone. So it seems I found a new love of being freaked out, though it has impeded my ability to sleep soundly at times.
I look forward to increasing my TBR list with more recommendations as I dive into this new-to-me genre!
Welcome, Kari! hope you enjoy Craven Manor and am so glad you're jumping right into the monthly discussions!
Hey Everyone,I’ve been registered on Goodreads for a while, but never used it much until the last few months.
Horror was one of the first things I really loved. It started with slasher movies when I was a young kid (questionable parenting, but my brother and I were latchkey kids in a single mom home). I really got obsessed with zombies for a long time starting with Romero’s films. I loved The Thing, Aliens, and any Sci Fi horror I could get my hands on.
Robert McCammon is my favorite author and Richard Laymon was an early favorite for some crazy ass horror rides.
I could go on and on but I won’t. While I love horror, I don’t have much tolerance for badly executed horror. I like the top shelf stuff with rare exception (such as liking Poultrygeist for some reason).

D.S.- i am ok with a slow burn, see (movie House of the Devil. i love that movie! book wise- just glance over my favorites shelf. Short chapters help cause you feel like your making progress and i think it's easier to stick with the book.
Garrett- i agree humor and horror. I just read My Best Friend's Exorcism and i think that's a good example.
