Samara | 4 comments When creating this color-coded world, were you consciously influenced by the fact that your last name is a color?

Sons of Ares (sonsofares) | 9 comments Yeah, Pierce, did you!?

I wonder about that all the time as well...

Samara | 4 comments I got to ask him about this last year on his book tour!!

He laughed, but said no. The stratified color classes were inspired by 1) a line in Plato's Republic that says "the iron man is suited to the iron task; the silver to the silver task; the gold to the gold" etc... and 2) a David Foster Wallace essay on cruise ships and how certain jobs are sub-contracted out to companies from different countries, which results in the cleaning staff being of one ethnicity while the chefs are from another etc..

Smartie pants.

Hope that helps!
