November 1 is National Authors Day (US). Read an author you've never read before. This task can be repeated 3 times, and cannot be used for combo points

10.2-Agatha Christie-
In honor of Agatha Christie, born September 15, 1890, read a book by an author whose life span was entirely within Dame Christie's lifetime (1890-1976). (Born 1890 or later AND died in/before 1976)

10.3 Dictionary-
October 16 is dictionary day. Read a book whose title is made up of words that are in alphabetical order, including articles and conjunctions. One word titles will not qualify for this task.

10.4 Math-
In honor of the back to school season, let's take a math lesson: Read a book with a number in the title, which can be in either numeric form or spelled out. Ordinals, such as first, 2nd, etc. do not qualify.

10.5 October Awards-
Read a book that has won or been a runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, or has won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize.

10.6 Reunification-
October 3 commemorates the 25th Anniversary of the unification of Germany. Read a book originally written in German or by an author born in Germany.

10.7 Librivox Eleanor's Task
Thanks to volunteers a lot of audio-books are available free of charge. Read (or listen to) a book shelved at least 5 times as Librivox.

10.8 The Horrors!-Karen's Task-
It’s time to be scared on a foggy fall night! Read a book by an author on the list of The All-Time Greatest Horror Writers on Ranker. The book does not have to be horror, but why not take a chance?

10.9 Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon-Ed's Task-
Read a book that you can connect to Kevin Bacon in six steps or less. For example - Kevin Bacon appeared in the movie - Mystic River- the book by Dennis Lehane would be just one step removed and easily qualifies - as would any of Lehane's other works (2 steps). Laura Linney appeared in that movie with Kevin Bacon and she also appeared in the film version of the Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin - so that would also qualify (3 steps).

Please post your connections in the help thread for 10.9 prior to claiming the books for points (or combos). Your chains do not need to be re-posted in the completed task thread.

Kate S | 6029 comments In honor of one of our esteemed, volunteer moderator's milestone birthday occurring this season, please join us in celebrating by reading books which fit the following tasks based on her favorite books! Happy Birthday, Elizabeth!!

Help celebrate Elizabeth's 70th birthday this season by reading a book whose original publication year contains both a 7 and a 0. Yes, doubles qualify (1770 and 2007 are fine)!

In honor of The Age of Innocence, read a book originally published no more than 20 years prior to the author's death. Include both year of publication and year of death in your post.

In honor of The Sound and the Fury, read one of the top 150 novels from the list Most Difficult Novels.

20.4 Balance
In honor of A Fine Balance, read one of the top 100 from the list South Asian Fiction OR one of the top 125 books from the list Best Canadian Literature.

In honor of Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation, read a book written by an author who has won the Pulitzer for History (can be fiction or non).

20.6-Ratings In honor of Crime and Punishment, read a book that has at least 300,000 ratings on Goodreads.

20.7 Microhistory Joanna's Task-
Microhistory: Microhistories are the study of one small thing, particularly with the goal of searching for answers to larger questions through the examination of a small thing. For this task, read a nonfiction microhistory. Books that fit this task focus on a specific item, event, or city, but are not merely a biography or memoir of a single person or a case study of a single event.

Examples include Salt: A World History, The Secret Life of Lobsters: How Fishermen and Scientists Are Unraveling the Mysteries of Our Favorite Crustacean, and Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers.

20.8 DAR-Rebekah's Task-
On Oct 11, we observe the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Daughters of the Revolution (DAR). For this task, read a book, fiction or non-fiction about any event that happened between the years 1770 - 1790. The entire book does not need to take place between these years, but at least half of the book should be set then.

I'm a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Unlike how we are often displayed in the media, (snobby gloved tea-drinkers) we are an all women's volunteer service organization who serve military veterans, assist people in gaining their US citizenship, Illiteracy programs, historical preservation, Native American Heritage, Education for school children, conservation of the environment to name a few. To become a member you must be a woman 18 yrs or older who is a lineal descendent of a Patriot of the American Revolution who served the cause of independence faithfully between the years 1775, the Battle of Lexington until 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

20.9 Authors with Three Names Krista's Task-
In honor of Louisa May Alcott's birthday on November 29, 1832, read a book by an author who is known by three names in Goodreads. Initials, name suffixes (Jr, Sr) and name prefixes (la, de, l' etc.) will not be counted as separate names, but hyphenated names will count as two names.

20.10 Interconnected Kate's Task-
Read a novel of interconnected stories or a short story collection whose stories are connected by recurring characters or setting.
