David Robinson | 3 comments This book was set in Edmonton, Ab and Vancouver, BC. I read it in the mid eighties. It was about a down on his luck man who walked through a curtain of light, lost consciousness, and awoke several years in the past. He got to live his life all over again, believing he could make a better go of it. I borrowed it from the NAIT Library some time before 1985.

Maybe it is on this Canadian speculative fiction list.

Mawgojzeta | 89 comments I do not recall where this book was set, but probably not Canada:
Replay by Ken Grimwood

I posted it mostly because it may help spark someone else's memory of other possible books.

David Robinson | 3 comments The one I'm thinking about has the same sort of premise. The story begins in the near future. The down on his luck protagonist wakes up at his family home and is a young man again.
I haven't read Replay but from reviews, I gather that the main character dies several times. In this other book, the main character doesn't actually die.

"Rerun" (1976) by Neil Crichton? You can reviews on Amazon:

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments Yeah, the GR description of _Replay_ is... problematic.

He actually suffers what feels to him to be a fatal heart-attack, and ends up young again, but with former memories (ie: has seen the future, and gets to make better choices this time around). So, has he died multiple times? Feels as if he has not, from the narrative stand-point, and from the logical standpoint as well.

Not set in Canada.

There's some other time travel set in Canada, of which doesn't fit this description, which is by Spider Robinson (iirc).

David Robinson | 3 comments Thank you Kris. I think we have a winner. Too bad it is out of print. However, I do have a starting point now.

Rerun by Neil Crichton.

David, glad we could help. Although "Replay" was my first guess as well. :)

Using Google, I came across Neil Crichton's "Rerun" as a brief reference in David Ketterer's "Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy":
"In Neil Crichton's Rerun (Don Mills, Ontario, 1976) a forty-year-old man is given the chance to relive his life when he finds himself transported from 1990 back to 1976 and only twenty-six years old."

Others on this site, particularly the moderators, can help you with purchasing old books online. Here's just one reference:

Good luck!

Btw, thinking of Canadian science fiction, have you read Robert J. Sawyer? I find he offers an interesting balance of science, speculation, and clever ideas. Flashforward and Hominids are a few titles that come to mind.
