This series seems geared toward a younger audience than what you're looking for but hey, worth a shot Usborne Puzzle Adventure Omnibus.You could also look into https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2....
Well, the Omnibus wasn't it but I went browsing through the other books by Usborne & found them! Thanks for the push in the right direction! :)

I remember these my son had them when he was in the first grade. One would keep him busy for about an hour. They were so fun.

Not the Max Finder books. And it wasn't simple mysteries like the Encyclopedia Brown books. These were "pull out the notepad and work for an hour to break the code" type puzzles.
