SparksofEmber | 957 comments Back in the mid-90s I had a couple of books that were solve-it-yourself mystery type books. They were formatted like a comic book, but square-shaped softbacks with glossy pages. In order to turn the page you had to solve the puzzle - it was frequently different kinds of codes - circled letters or numbers in a letter, symbols painted on the walls of a room, things like that. I had these books in high school and they were often HARD!

Not the Max Finder books. And it wasn't simple mysteries like the Encyclopedia Brown books. These were "pull out the notepad and work for an hour to break the code" type puzzles.

Megan | 151 comments This series seems geared toward a younger audience than what you're looking for but hey, worth a shot Usborne Puzzle Adventure Omnibus.

SparksofEmber | 957 comments Well, the Omnibus wasn't it but I went browsing through the other books by Usborne & found them! Thanks for the push in the right direction! :)

I remember these my son had them when he was in the first grade. One would keep him busy for about an hour. They were so fun.
