Genres: Young Adults- Its a coming of age story, a love story. (Fits 15 and up) A fast read!

Description:

SHE WROTE ON CLAY is a story of a daring young woman, who strives to become a female scribe 3800 years ago, in the ancient Land of Iraq.
Set nearly 3,800 years ago, the novel traces the journey of Iltani,17 years old, who dreams of becoming a scribe. In order to fulfill her destiny she enters the gagû, becoming a nadītu, an elite class of monastic women. There, she is expected to lead a sheltered life. But life is not that simple; and very soon she is forced to deal with many unforeseen misfortunes. It takes all her strength to achieve her dream.
Nevertheless, after a few years of tranquility, she is invited by a male scribe to take part in engraving the stele for King Hammurabi; an invitation which will not only cause turmoil and uncertainty in her peaceful existence, but will also introduce Iltani for the first time to Love.

An excerpt from the book:
"As Iltani observed the people, someone tapped her on the shoulder. When she turned around, her eyes met those of the young man with the reddish curls who had ridden behind the King. Perplexed, she bowed to him. "Prince Samsu-iluna, may Šamaš keep you in good health forever!" she said in awe.
"Me? Prince Samsu-iluna? No, no, I am definitely not the Prince," he said at last, adding with a little laugh. "I am merely one of the King's scribes. But you Iltani, your fame precedes you, far beyond the gagû. It is said you are better than half the scribes who work for the High Priest."
Iltani was not sure how to react. How did he know her name? Or that she was a scribe?
"Do we know each other?" she finally brought herself to ask.
"I suppose eight years in the service of the King can change a person." He seemed amused. "You have hardly changed at all. Do you not remember me?"
Iltani's mind raced. This man spoke as if they knew each other yet she had no idea who he was."

Further information: The novel is based on historical sources from over 4000 years ago. And imbedded into the plot are original texts translated into English.
