Scalzi said he and Wheaton are from the same area and he chose him because they sound alike. I just got the latest Lock In but haven't started it yet. It sounds serious, but nothing by Scalzi could ever be totally serious (I hope)

Scott S. | 722 comments I noticed Scalzi's newest book has multiple narrations, which I thought was a great idea. Maybe the idea will spread. Anyhow the version that is listed as the Wil Wheaton narration lists multiple narrators at the end of the book "....narrated by Wil Wheaton, Oliver Wyman, etc..."

I haven't listened to the book yet, just clicked through to ensure my mp3 conversion was successful.

*Update
Ah dang it. I was getting annoyed that the conversation was straying from the original topic and now I've been drawn in.

message 310: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 10 comments From the pages of Goodreads I lurked and mined and stumbled on to the recommendation: Fingersmith' by Sarah Waters. I am just good and going so no I don't know where the path will take me. What I can say is that I am enchanted and hungry to hit the play button each morning and afternoon when the commute starts. You know it's good when you stop in traffic, pull over and hit rewind to play again the last ten minutes. Whatever you do don't tell me how it ends. I didn't think Wilkie Collins had an equal.

message 311: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 23 comments Hi everyone! :) I've just finished, Bird Box - A Novel, by Josh Malerman. I gave this audiobook five stars, all round.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Bird Box, is an exciting, and often heartbreaking, post apocalypse story. I know there are a lot of these kinda books on the market, but this one is different. I feel that it stands out from the others.

The story is set around a few survivors, and the choices they have to make to stay alive. The story is fast paced, and exciting. And the characters are strong, and likable.

Cassandra Campbell, is the narrator. I think she did a great job. I could hear the fear, and desperation in her voice. It felt like she was living the story, not just telling it.

I highly recommended.

Colleen, you've sold me. Lolita is a challenge book for me to read this year, and your post has made me decide that I MUST get my hands on an audio version. :) Thanks!

message 314: by Colleen (new)

Colleen | 12 comments Sweet! Hope you enjoy it! I looked into the actor more. I guess he played the character in a 1997 movie version. But I can't imagine that representation is as good because all the narration by him is simply perfect!

message 315: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 72 comments Thanks, Colleen! I actually just ordered it, and it will be here on Friday. Hopefully I'll be finished with my current audio by then... I really want to listen to Lolita now. I may need to look into the movie, but not until after the book is read.

message 316: by Bill (Just a) (new)

Bill (Just a) | 911 comments Lolita was one of my top listens last year. After which the bride and I watched the 1962 version and then watched the Jeremy Irons 1997 version. Both good. Neither as good as the book.

message 317: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 17 comments Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand - read by Edward Hermann (so moving!)
This Time Together, by Carol Burnette - read by the author (so funny!)
And my newest favorite...
To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee - read by Sissy Spacek (what a classic and she's the perfect narrator)

And of course anything Ken Follett writes read by John Lee is amazing! Sorry I have a hard time picking just three!!

I just downloaded To Kill a Mockingbird narrated by Sissy Spacek on Audible - last week. They have it now! It's wonderful - one of my top 3 for sure. She's the perfect narrator for that story.

Audible or on CD from the library. I listened to it via the latter several years ago...same version they're selling on Audible with Sissy Spacek. Kinda cracked me up with Audible advertised it as, "For the first time ever..." because that version's been out for awhile, just not on Audible.

"Helter Skelter" by Vincent Bugliosi, is a fantastic audiobook. As most people will know, Helter Skelter, is the true story of the Manson murders, and the trial.

The audiobook is amazing value, at only $4.59 (That is the price for Irish customers, sometimes prices differ elsewhere) The audiobook is 26 hours and 33 minutes long. So, its a long one, but it is very interesting. I learned a lot of new information about that case. I was shocked by the amount of mistakes the police made in the run up to the trail.

The narrator is, Scott Brick. He is really, really good. He made the audiobook even more interesting. I will be looking out for this narrator in the future.

I rated, Helter Skelter, a five star audiobook.

Here is a link to the Audiobook:

I am listening to "House of Reckoning," by John Saul at the moment. I'm half way through it, and I am really enjoying it.

The audiobook is only $5.59 on Amazon. I obviously can't rate it, because I haven't finished it yet. So, I'll update my comment when I've fished.

+1 for Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction, and this is certainly the case. I was riveted.

Rats - I actually read that in paperback. I meant that I listened the sequel, The Wise Man's Fear, on audio - that was really good.

I believe he reads the novella that's coming out himself.

Patrick (volmann) | 20 comments "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote
This masterpiece of non-fiction (however so very very sad) is simply incredible. A long listen but worth every minute and then some.
The bad guys pre-date Manson and of course Bundy, yet just as brutal and depraved.

message 332: by Patrick (new)

Patrick (volmann) | 20 comments So true Gillian, Scott Brick is masterful, regardless of the genre. He has narrated several W.E.B. Griffin aka William Butterworth efforts (WWII) and really makes the content enjoyable.

Since you took a listen to "Helter Skelter", I would highly recommend "in Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. Nor sure of the cost because I generally pick and choose at the Nashville library...Erin Go Bragh!

Hi Patrick, :) thank you so much for the recommendation. "In Cold Blood," sounds really good. And I really want to listen to another audiobook narrated by Scott Brick.

I've added it to my wish list. I'll get it with my next credit.

Thank-you!

Wow - I'm listening to The Graveyard Book right now! I'm really enjoying it - spooky and weird. Gaiman does good reading his own stuff.

message 339: by Gillian (new)

Gillian | 23 comments Deedra & Jim, "The Graveyard Book" sounds really good. There are two versions on Audible.

One version has a Full-Cast Production:

http://www.audible.com/pd/Teens/The-G...

The second version is narrated by the author, Neil Gaiman.

http://www.audible.com/pd/Teens/The-G...

Which version would you both recommend?

Also, I love a good old scary book. Does this book have scary ghosts. Or is it friendly, fun for all the family type ghosts? Jim, you described the book as "spooky and weird." That is what caught my attention. I love spooky and weird books! :)

It gets really good reviews, it sounds great! :)

Oooh - if it's unabridged, I'd love to try the cast! Unfortunately, my library only had Gaiman's reading - but it's really good. I really couldn't comment on the cast recording, not having heard it.

It's really written for a younger crowd, maybe middle school? But the book starts with death (like almost every Disney movie, I guess). It's not graphic, but (view spoiler). But there's really nothing in the book my 7-year-old wouldn't be bothered by, though it's not really on his level.

message 344: by Deedra (new)

Deedra | 172 comments I find I like books geared toward a younger crowd as much as I do the ones written for adults.I finally convinced my husband to read Coraline after we saw Mr Gaiman give a talk at a local college. He really liked it too.

Anne Scott (jonanne) | 21 comments The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony and Graham Spence was spectacular! If you love elephants this will be a real win for you. Im on my phone and can't cut and paste or copy and paste so I will have to do my three favorites as three entries. Sorry.

message 348: by Linda (new)

Linda (hergy) | 4 comments This is a great idea for a list...but I wish the responses could be consolidated...there are just too many messages to sort through which is the downside of a group with 4k+ members.

1 - The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson (cast of 3 narrators Tim Kang, Josiah Lee and James Lee)
2 - Ruby (read by Author Cynthia Bond)
3 - The Good Lord Bird by James McBride (Michael Boltman narrates)
Runner Up: Burial Rites by Hannah Kent (read by Morven Christie)

message 349: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne (roxannebcb) | 61 comments Linda - I also really loved Burial Rites in audio. It is so under the radar. But the narration is completely unique and adds so much to the book. I don't see how the text book could be as good. I'm going to try The Good Lord Bird.

message 350: by Susan (new)

Susan (suze0501) | 37 comments I'm sort of thinking a lot of you folk are in the USA because I haven't heard of most of the narrators.

From Audible.co.uk my three absolute faves are:

Wolf Hall - narrated by Simon Slater (captures every bit of the understated humour in this book - loved his interpretation of Cromwell)

The Wasteland - narrated by Paul Schofield (well anything narrated by Paul Schofield really!)

Landscape of Love - narrated by Juliet Stevenson and Alex Jennings (not a great novel, but so beautifully narrated it becomes great).

I was very excited that one of these posts revealed that In Cold Blood is available as an audiobook, but bitterly disappointed to find that it's not on the UK site. Similarly, no John Steinbeck. Mad as hell!!!!
