Shannon (shannonbaggins) | 83 comments I've just seen the new goal to read a book which was first published in February. I have one book which I've got from the library which meets this. It is Geek Girl This was first published on the 1st February 2013.
I can start this afternoon if no one else has any other books they haven't already started that can meet this goal.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments Great Shannon. It seems however that the book The Living Years: The First Genesis Memoir read by Delta actually was first released in February this year, so we can already cross that goal off, as it hasn't been used for another goal.

But if you still want to start the book go ahead, we'll use it for attack points of for another goal if it matches any coming goals.

message 103: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannonbaggins) | 83 comments Okay, that is no problem, it was just an idea if none of the other books fit :)

I have just finished Raging Star which can be put towards the attack points (344 pages)

message 104: by Emily (new)

Emily Looks like our newest goal is: Read a book whose author (first or last) starts with X

message 105: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments See that one is more difficult. I don't have an X author at the moment. If anyone has anything that works you're welcome to read it:)

message 106: by Emily (new)

Emily *Sigh* Why can't our goals fit with the books I already have out from the library? Haha.

I just requested I Am China by Xiaolu Guo from my Inter-Library Loan. Should get it by the weekend. It was the only book I had on my almost-3000-book TBR that has an "X" author. But it's one I wanted to read, so might as well do it now!

One of the other groups I saw was struggling on "book that starts with 'X'" and I had two that fit that one. (I didn't give them any tips, of course, don't worry. Hehe.) But only one for author. Oh well. :)

message 107: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) I also have one that fits the author with an "X" category. It's not in my pipeline, but it's only about 200 pages so it wouldn't take too long to read. I will let Kate start her book first if she wants since it's actually on her TBR. Kate, let me know if you would rather read something else.

Only read it if you want to. I requested the book from the library, so I'll be reading it next week no matter what. If you want to crank out a different book before then, feel free, but don't feel like you have to. If you do, I'll just use mine for attack points.

Nah, I'll keep reading the books in my pipeline. I'm trying to finish some other Goodreads challenges at the same time. Hopefully, my books will just squeeze themselves into the challenges as they come up.

message 110: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments wow, I checked the page this morning and nothing had happened, but now we've done so much! Cool=)
Hopefully I will finish a book today that takes care of the goal first published between 1951 and 1999.

Emily Silje wrote: "wow, I checked the page this morning and nothing had happened, but now we've done so much! Cool=)

That helps, Silje. :) I'm going to put my 1951-1999 book off to the side (I was going to start it today) and get some of my other library books read before the "X" book gets in. Those I'll just use toward attack points, or a later goal. And I started Frog Music today (for "leek"), so I'll hopefully have that done by this weekend.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments A Very Accidental Love Story by Claudia Carroll
I finished A Very Accidental Love Story by Claudia Carroll
It doesn't work for any goals, but will add it to attack points. I added it to the spreadsheet.

I'm so excited I finally read this book. It was like number #6/7 on my TBR list, so it's been on there forever. I ended up loving it! Just the kind of Chick Lit I love.

message 113: by Silje (last edited Aug 05, 2015 02:43PM) (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Finished Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia, first published in 1992, so yet another goal acchieved=)
A really strong book, makes you smile sometimes, but mostly you want to punch something because of how unfair things can be.

New goal: Read a book that is book 3 in a series

message 114: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannonbaggins) | 83 comments I just finished raging star this morning which is the third book in the dustlands trilogy, could we use that?

message 115: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Yes we can! Great=)

message 116: by Silje (last edited Aug 05, 2015 02:47PM) (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Next goal: read a book by an author who was born in Europe

I see that Delta's The Angel Court Affair by Anne Perry can work, since she is born in Blackheath, London, England, so I'll just place that one there.

message 117: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Ok, a new goal before I'm off to bed:
a book which has the main location (setting) in South Africa

message 118: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments Hopefully one of you guys have something for the new goal. I don't think I have any books set in South Africa on my TBR.

message 119: by Silje (last edited Aug 06, 2015 12:54AM) (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Anyone reading anything from Wilbur Smith? A lot of his books have setting in South Africa.

message 120: by Margaret (last edited Aug 06, 2015 02:02AM) (new)

Margaret | 456 comments Silje wrote: "a book which has the main location (setting) in South Africa"

Ok, I've got one: Heart of Africa
I probably won't start it until the week-end though, but its a quick read (190 pages). Will post once it's read.

message 121: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 456 comments Anita/Silje - did you want me to post all the books I read here on this thread, even if they don't meet the defense goals? Or will you check my nominated shelf? I am currently reading Before the Larkspur Blooms but it doesn't meet any of the defense goals, so wasn't sure if I needed to let you know? We will get 0.5 attack points for it though.

message 122: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Margaret, just post all books you read above 160 pages within the timeframe of the competition, everything we read willl give us attackpoints.

message 123: by Nidhi (new)

Nidhi Bhatt | 151 comments Silje wrote: Next goal: read a book by an author who was born in Europe

I just completed Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella who is born in UK London.

If you wanna add it.

I also wanted to know which date is considered as starting point of competition? I have read many books in July if we can include them then it would be great.

message 124: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Nidhi, you have to have started reading the book at August 2nd or after for it to count in this round.

We only need one book per goal, but we add it to the attackpoints=)

message 125: by Nidhi (new)

Nidhi Bhatt | 151 comments I thought all the books read since opening of the competetion would be considered. I will have to remove many books from my list then... :(

message 126: by Emily (new)

Emily Nidhi wrote: "I thought all the books read since opening of the competetion would be considered. I will have to remove many books from my list then... :("

Only books read in completion from the start of the competition until now - so it has to be started after the start of Round 1 and finished before the end of Round 1. If it was started before August 2nd we can't count it. And if you start it after August 2nd, but finish it during Round 2, it doesn't count for either round.

The only book I have for the South Africa goal is Cry, the Beloved Country - it's not one that I was planning on reading just now, but if you get stuck on the one you're reading let me know and I can get it from the library.

message 128: by Silje (last edited Aug 06, 2015 06:39AM) (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Nidhi, do you have any books finished since August 2nd, or started reading some?=) Just so I can write them on our spreadsheet.

message 129: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) You know, I just finished reading The Smell of Apples a month or so ago. It would have been a good book for the South Africa challenge.

message 130: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments that is so typical, one of the other books I read in this competition too would have fit, but it is already used for another goal.

message 131: by Delta (last edited Aug 06, 2015 08:49AM) (new)

Delta (sicname) Last night I finished Effortless Healing: 9 Simple Ways to Sidestep Illness, Shed Excess Weight, and Help Your Body Fix Itself, 288 pages. It doesn't fit any current goals. I was hoping it would have "leek" in it, but I guess they aren't healthy enough. :)

Haha. Too bad leeks aren't healthy enough for your book. :) Guess we'll have to wait until the weekend for me to finish my "leek" book before getting a new goal. Oh well...

Hope it was a good book for you anyway, though. :)

message 133: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) Kate wrote: "Haha. Too bad leeks aren't healthy enough for your book. :) Guess we'll have to wait until the weekend for me to finish my "leek" book before getting a new goal. Oh well... "

Meh. It wasn't terrible. There were a couple of strange recommendations, and the writing style was a bit more personal than I like my health books to be. But it's good for someone looking to start living healthy.

message 134: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) Finished Soul Cypher, 214 pages. It doesn't fit any challenges so far, but I have a feeling it will fit something in the future.

message 135: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Tangled by Emma Chase finished, not fitting a goal yet=(

message 136: by Nidhi (new)

Nidhi Bhatt | 151 comments I started reading I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella yesterday. So it can be added to the spreadsheet.

message 137: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannonbaggins) | 83 comments Just finished Prodigy By Marie Lu. (356 pages)

Also, are there any rules regarding reading ARC's as long as they are more than 160 pages?

message 138: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Great, I will add the books when I get home from work.

Shannon, I don't think there is any special rule for ARC's as long as they are 160pg+, but I can check=)

message 139: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannonbaggins) | 83 comments Okay, thank you! Just thought I'd be certain first

message 140: by Silje (last edited Aug 07, 2015 06:25AM) (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Shannon, just got answer from the MODs, nothing special rules for ARC's, just pagecount

message 141: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) Good news. I found an audio book set in South Africa. I should have it finished later today.

message 142: by Emily (new)

Emily Delta wrote: "Good news. I found an audio book set in South Africa. I should have it finished later today."

Yay!

I'm hoping for a slow day at work today, so I can get through a good chunk of Frog Music. Hoping to have it finished by tomorrow.

message 143: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannonbaggins) | 83 comments awesome, thanks

message 144: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Delta, Kate; That is good news=)

message 145: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) Finished Deadlands, 320 pages. Set in Cape Town, South Africa.

Emily Delta wrote: "Finished Deadlands, 320 pages. Set in Cape Town, South Africa."

message 147: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1453 comments Great job, Delta!

New goal: Read a book written by an author who was born in Central America

message 148: by Delta (last edited Aug 07, 2015 03:53PM) (new)

Delta (sicname) Why does it feel like we are getting all the hard ones? Can we consider Mexico as part of Central America? Many countries (apparently) do.

message 149: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannonbaggins) | 83 comments Urgh, I keep going through my books hoping to meet the goals and I can't find any. I was looking at goals other teams have and theirs seem so much easier.

I'm hoping to finish a 512pg book tomorrow so we'll get 1 attack point instead of 0.5! Yay!

message 150: by Delta (new)

Delta (sicname) If anyone has a suggestion for an audio book that meets the Central America challenge, I will try to grab it and finish it this weekend. I'm having a hard time finding one in the first place.
