Rachel and I are going to be reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (book 3) starting 2/16/14.

Synopsis From Goodreads
Harry Potter is lucky to reach the age of thirteen, since he has already survived the murderous attacks of the feared Dark Lord on more than one occasion. But his hopes for a quiet term concentrating on Quidditch are dashed when a maniacal mass-murderer escapes from Azkaban, pursued by the soul-sucking Dementors who guard the prison. It's assumed that Hogwarts is the safest place for Harry to be. But is it a coincidence that he can feel eyes watching him in the dark, and should he be taking Professor Trelawney's ghoulish predictions seriously?

Chapter 11 I'm trying to guess who the Firebolt is from... I can't decide if it was a nice gift (from Dumbledore) or a gift with a curse (from Sirius Black)

They have their good and bad times (Mostly bad). But I really did not like they way they treated Harry in this one.

Hagrid is great and I think what makes him so great is that he has been through so much but won't allow it to break up. He just stands up taller.

I'm about 75% through now.. The pace picked up a lot in these last few chapters.. There's still so many unanswered questions though. Like HOW is Hermione getting to all these different places at the same time?

Poor Hagrid :((( He just wants an animal to love and they keep takin em away

I love this book so much :) Okay, I love all the Harry Potter books, but I have a special thing for this one. It's the first time we have contact with the Dementors, which is just a genius conception, one of many. ;) And just basically it's a fantastic book.

YES YES YES! The plot twists in this series are amazing! I never ever see them coming and the way JKR fits everything together is pure genius.. I can totally understand why these books were such a hit.

The only complaint I have is I wish there was more of a romance aspect but I guess I can understand that these kids are still pretty young.. I'm crossing my fingers for a little bit of romance in the next 3 :)

Two out of three of the Dursleys get better as the series goes on. Although, Mr. Dursley did make me laugh in the first chapter (view spoiler)[when he started to lose it over the letters from Hogwarts (hide spoiler)].

You would think with all the crap they've pulled that they would feel differently. I still love Dumbledore. He always seems to know what goes on there and he is so laid back. (hide spoiler)]

The story begins with Mr. Dursley going about his normal life, which includes his normal son, his normal wife, and his normal job. When everything appears to be nothing out of the ordinary, people in robes, owls, and a strangely serious cat begin to show up. They whisper the name "Potter" which happens to be his the sister of his wife's last name. At first, he thinks nothing of it, but one day they wake up to a baby Harry on their front porch. About 10 years later, it is apparent that they are giving Harry the bare minimal. He is given Dudley's old clothes, which are much to big, never allowed to attend family outings, and is relentlessly bullied by Dudley. One day, a letter arrives for Harry, but after Uncle Vernon takes one look at it, he refuses to let Harry read it. After multiple days of trying to evade letters, they end up in a shack that is on a rock located in the middle of the ocean. As Harry counts down the seconds to his 11th birthday, a large and burly man by the name of Hagrid breaks down the door and tells him happy birthday and that he is a wizard, a very famous wizard.

The next morning, Harry and Hagrid leave the shack and go to get Harry's school supplies. To get to the shops that Harry needs, they have to get to Diagon Alley. Once they are there, they go to the bank where Harry finds that his parents have left him quite a bit of money. Before they leave the bank, Hagrid retrieved a package. After Harry has gotten all of his school supplies, he is sent back home for about a month until school starts. Once the time has come for Harry to go to Hogwarts, he gets Uncle Vernon to drop him off at the train station. He is supposed to go to platform nine and three quarters, but can't find it until he overhears a family, later revealed to be the Weasleys, that helps him through the wall to the platform. One the train he befriends Ron Weasley and meets Hermione Granger. When they arrive at Hogwarts, all three of them are put into the Gryffindor House.

Chapters 9-12:

The Quidditch season is arriving and Harry's house has to practice flying lessons with Slytherin. The morning of their first flying lessons, Neville receives a Remembrall from his grandmother, which Malfoy takes, but after Professor McGonagall intervenes, it is returned. Later that day, they are attending their first flying lessons. Neville loses control of his broomstick and falls and breaks his wrist. Their instructor, Madam Hooch, orders them not to touch their brooms while she takes Neville to the infirmary. Once they are gone, Malfoy spots Neville's Remebrall on the ground and takes off with it. Harry catches the Remebrall right before it hits the ground. Unfortunately, Professor McGonagall is there and takes him away from the training field. Anxious about being expelled, Harry is surprised when she takes him to the captain of the guard and says that he is the Seeker that he has been searching for. Harry wins their first game by catching the Golden Snitch. Also, a troll is let lose in the school and, after hearing about Hermione in the bathroom, they rush to save her. Not long afterwards, Harry sees Snape with a leg injury and hears him referencing the large three-headed dog that is later revealed to be Hagrid's pet named Fluffy.


When Christmas Break arrives, Harry and the Weasleys are left at Hogwarts. Harry receives some presents, but the lost notable one is an invisibility cloak. He wears it to find out about Flamel. While he is in the restricted section of the library, the first book that he opens screams, causing him to run from the library. He hides in a room with a big mirror that shows his parents and other members of his family. After returning to the mirror the next few nights, Dumbledore tells him that the mirror is people desire most in the world.

After getting caught by Professor McGonagall, Harry, Hermione, Neville, and Malfoy are given detention. Their detention consists of them going into the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid to put a unicorn out of its misery. They split up into two groups: one group is Harry, Hermione, and Hagrid and the other is Malfoy and Neville. During their time in the forest, Harry meets some centaurs that help save him from a hooded figure drinking the blood of the unicorn. Professor Quirrell is later revealed to be the person drinking the blood for Voldemort, who was attached to his head underneath the Turban that he wore. When they get past Fluffy to stop whoever is trying to steal the philosopher's stone, they find Quirrell trying to get it from the mirror that Harry had previously seen his family in. After obtaining the stone because he doesn't envision himself using it for his own personal gain, Harry is able to fend off Quirrell. As everything goes black, he wakes up in the infirmary with Dumbledore beside him. He tells Harry that everyone in the school knows what he did, and everybody likes him again, which is evident by the pile of presents that he was given. Harry also finds out that the stone was destroyed. A bit later, there is the end of the year feast, which Harry is allowed to attend. When he arrives, he sees that Slytherin has won, but after Dumbledore gives 50 points each to Hermione and Ron, 60 points to Harry, and 10 to Neville, Gryffindor wins the House Cup.
