Reads with Scotch I love Alaska, I hate Alaska.
This is a beautiful, state and yet Alaskans tend to:

Collect junked cars, to the extent that puts the “dirty south” to shame, and would even impress Jeff Foxworthy

Then there are the trash collectors, this is a special breed of Alaskans, these are the people that haven’t been to a garbage dump in 20 years. Not exaggerating here, I saw house on about 3 acres of land, surrounded by mounds of trash. Dishwashers, glad bags containing who knows what, scrap metal, old furniture, bone piles from past hunting expeditions, and oh so much more.

Half completed home additions:
Ok you built a log home, just you and your wife… then you push out a nipple nibbler and you don’t have room for it. So you start building an addition to your house, halfway through you decided it would be a good Idea to put a few extra rooms on incase you have a few more nipple mongers. But then you only finish two of the three rooms. The third is left in disrepair and covered in sky blue tarps, held in place by, you guessed it, Duct tape. It will stay like that till a forest fire burns the place down, hopefully with the clan inside.

There is more but I will wait for some feed back.

i know long wait- just got back online and decided to take the bait
maine, same blue tarps, junk cars, i had a compost pile, no baggies tho
one year a couple of garbage bags (10-15)got frozen in till spring
the freakin oil tank had this leak that wouldn't be stopped-my own personal exxon valdez
guess what-they all do beyond any town of 10,000 freezin souls
most Feb days i didn't want to go out to get groceries let alone go spruce up the yard
and July was for lake swimmin
Alaska are you kiddin!
the guys been there since 49-his metabolism has slowed to the consistency of dark molasses going up hill on a cold day
yard work is not in the offing plus all that stuff looks like animals or somethin with 2 feet of snow covering it-friendly little lumpkins
i sort of miss them
and the sound of the blue tarp whistlin in the wind...
you didn't mention tires on trailer roofs?
and the 11 dogs sittin around the woodstove

Reads with Scotch Yeah, it must be a cold climate thing. As soon as you mentioned tires and trailers. My mind jumped to half disassembled snow machines, an upturned boat with a cracked haul. Hey dude... you ever going to float anywhere in that? Then throw it away. I think we have all had a trash Bin freeze to the ground or get snowed in, but Maureen, the house I mentioned earlier, had a walkway about 2 1/2 to 3 feet wide leading to the house the rest of the property was trash.

That is one thing I love about Alaska, I get to use my wood burning stove 8 months out of the year, Birch, and spruce smell great.

try an occaisional apple or cherry one small 2 inch log will burn for an hour or more on banked embers and the fragrance is lovely
of course don't cut down a fruit tree for it
I had some abandoned orchards around and gathered deadfall from the trees
you don't heat with primarily spruce and birch do you?
I hate that you've got me discussing the burning qualities of various woods while I sit on my couch in So. Cal.
I also hate that I call it So. Cal.

Reads with Scotch I would have to import those. We have 3 kinds of trees in alaska. Spruce, aspen, and birtch. Nothing else seems to grow vary well.
It's the permafrost. Anything you plant up here really needs a shallow root draft.

Reads with Scotch No I don't use the wood stove as a primary, just to keep the heating oil consumption down to a min.
