I am looking for a paperback book that I read multiple times as a teenager in the eighties. It was about a backwoods sort of family and I believe it may have been set in the Appalachian mtns. The mother must have been already dead, then the father gets really sick and dies. The kids don't want to go to an orphanage, so they hide the Dads death for a long time from visiting neighbors by telling them their Dad is in his bedroom too sick for company. They actually buried him after dark one night. I would love for my daughter to be able to read this book.

That sounds like Where the Lilies Bloom by Vera Cleaver Great book! It was also made into a movie, although I never saw it.(I think Bill Cleaver was a co-author, too).
