Nick Jones | 2 comments Hi all! I read this book in 1996 when I was in 7th grade. The protagonist was young person learning magic, which involved spinning or weaving the spells. I remember one scene where he or she repeatedly spun a muffling spell until it was thick enough to guarantee silence for the conversation.
Another major feature of the book was travel to various canyons or chasms that contained their own civilizations.
I'm afraid that's all I remember, and google searches have been fruitless. I'm hoping someone knows! Thanks so much.

Nick | 11 comments I've also been looking for this book. If it's the same one as you. I only remember that the magic had to do with weaving and the main character had to wear a certain color of clothing which denoted her skill level in magic.

I thought it was the circle of magic series by tamora pierce, but after reading the descriptions of the books I don't believe they're the right ones. I'm gonna follow this, so maybe I can find that long lost book as well.

Holly (hollylovesbooks) | 759 comments This is a couple years too late probably, but maybe Spinners?

Here are some other suggestions:
Light Weaver
The Spellcoats
Weaveworld

Kokomomomo | 62 comments I was about to suggest The Spellcoats too; the same author wrote The Lives of Christopher Chant, where the main character has the ability to travel to parallel worlds via a sort of rocky/mountainous travel node leading to various valleys.

Nick Jones | 2 comments That's it... The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynne Jones.

Thanks all! SOLVED!

Kokomomomo | 62 comments Yay! The Chrestomanci books are great even as an adult, hope you enjoy re-reading! :D
