Book: The Dragon Who Loved Me (Dragon Kin #5) by G.A. Aiken

Review:
I've really been putting off this book for month now but as usual with the series I was not disappointed. It was a funny, action packed book.
The book starts 5 years after the last one and the war is coming to an end. The heroine is yet another female from Cadwaladr clan, Rhona and our hero is Vigholf, the Lightning dragon. After all the books I've read I still can't remember most of the Cadwaladr clan so I can't even say I've heard of Rhona before this book.
There wasn't that much of a romance between Rhona and Vigholf, it took a backseat to the greater scheme of the book - winning the war. Their banter was fun to read and I came to really like them eventually.
There were many things in the book I didn't understand, probably because I take so much time between the books but each book itself is so much fun I don't mind that.

You have to try it - the first book was great but I liked the rest of them even better - they're all so fun to read.

I hope I can get to I-Team soon but with my current reading schedule and wishes that time doesn't seem to be close

review:
this is the 3rd book in the series. This one isn't about jewel heist - it is about Hale. When Hale's grandmother dies, he is pulled back into his family life, giving up heists with Kat because he just inherited her company. The crew then must save his company without his help because not everything is as black and white as it appears. We also get to see a flashback of how Hale and Kat met. We get to glimpse into his life outside of the thievery he takes part in with Kat and the others and understand why he would want to go with Kat - I felt for Hale, what an awful family. This book is a big win for Hale - he grows so much in this one. Of course, I love the Kat/ Hale relationship - it is not overly mushy (which is one reason I love it and them so much). There are crazy plans, crooked people, and twists all through the book. But it is nothing less than what we have come to expect either. Of course don't forget Kat family and friends - which add so much to the book also. Great all together read!!

I would recommend this book.

Marty (martymill) | 1299 comments Space 35 (35th in the Discworld series)
Book:
Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett
Read: 3/12/14
Rating: Four stars
Review:

This installment of the Discworld series wasn't as slapstick funny as the previous Pratchett novels I've read. It was a quick, fun read, the main character is endearingly goofy and some of the older characters have returned.

Tiffany Aching is a witch-in-training. In Discworld, witches aren't necessarily evil beings, it's more a case of being smarter than everyone around them. Tiffany is apprenticed to Miss Treason, the oldest of the witches. One night while watching a troupe of morris dancers perform, Tiffany is pulled into the dance by a strange force. While she moves to the music, she is sudden confronted by a strange spiritual force. It is the Wintersmith, a sort of snow god spirit, who promptly falls in love with her and begins to make a nuisance of himself.

Strange things begin to happen to Tiffany: words that come out of her mouth against her will, beautiful but strange ice presents that spell out her name, as well as the snowflakes that bear a likeness of her face. All are huge embarrassments to this not-yet-13 year old girl who's about to lose her mentor to old age (well, sort of), not to mention dealing with the Feegles, mischievous pictsies who seem to be always underfoot and stealing food. Frustrated with his continued attentions, Tiffany confronts the Wintersmith, insisting that she's too human and he's too snowy for any relationship to work. Rather than putting him off, this only makes the Wintersmith more determined to find a way to win her heart.

Granny Weatherwax and the shameless, slatternly Nanny Ogg are also back in the mix. There's a bit of a controversy over who will take on Miss Treason's cottage and serve the village. Granny Weatherwax wants that witch to be Tiffany. Mrs. Earwig, a snobby, sort of 'New Age' witch, wants one of her own proteges, Annagramma Hawkin, to take over, a choice that could prove disastrous to the village.

It looks like Tiffany Aching may be a recurring character too, since the cover refers to it as 'a Tiffany Aching' novel. Terry Pratchett's wacky stories do grow on you.

Week 5, Roll 9:
Current Space: 35
Unlawful Contact (I-Team, #3) by Pamela Clare
Book :
Unlawful Contact by Pamela Clare (I-Team, Book 3)
Finished: March 12
Rating & Review: ★★★3/4. Not quite a 4 because the heroine was a bootleg reporter. How can Sophie be an I-Team reporter when she was so naive, dense, unobservant, passive and just slow on the uptake?

Sophie Alton and her brother grew up with her grandmother after her parents died in a car crash. In a spontaneous act when she was 16, she had sex with her high school crush, a senior guy she only knew as Hunt. Hunt left for the military the day after, and Sophie never heard from him again.

12 years later, Sophie worked as an I-team reporter and she was working on a story with drug addicted inmates and the pregnancies behind bars. One of her subjects Meghan went missing with her newborn baby and drugs were found in her cell. A man hunt ensued for the missing convict and the newborn baby. Meghan's brother decided that this interested reporter, Sophie, would be his key in finding his sister. So the convicted murder Marc Hunter set up an interview with Sophie and then held her hostage and escaped.

During this hostage situation, Sophie found out that Marc Hunter was her "Hunt". He told her his story and she had to figure out if she trusted him enough to jeopardize her career and get to the bottom of who framed him, Meghan and what was going on in that correctional facilities.

What I enjoyed about this series is the author tackles pretty serious topics. And the author goes all in. Not the fluffy stuff. The series is also well written. The heroine was a bit slow, but I loved Marc. He was a stand up guy.

I look forward to book 4.

I really liked the first two books from the series so I was rather disappointed by this book. It followed the story of two couples, between Taylor and Brek and between Eve and Sloan.
I couldn't get past what Taylor did to Brek and if I were him I would have never taken Taylor back. He waited for over two years for her to come back and explain it to him but she didn't do a thing until she found out about his engagement.
All in all this was still decent sports romance book and it will be interesting to read Sliding Home

Egypt: the Book of Chaos by Nick Drake
Read: 3/15/14
Rating: Two stars
Review:

So disappointing. This series started out so well. Rai Rahotep, chief officer in the Menjay (police force) of ancient Egypt, deserved a better send off. Unfortunately, the historical strength just wasn't there this time. The book takes place during the period between the death of Tutankhamen and the rise of General Horemheb. Tutankhamen's wife, Akhsenamen, is trying to broker a marriage between herself and the Hittite king. Given the general unrest in the country, this seems to be her only means of survival.

There's also a drug war going on in the cities - one that sounded a little too much like 21st century gang warfare. There a particularly heinous form of opium being circulated, supposedly all controlled by a shadowy character called Obsidian. It's not that such a situation wasn't happening in Egypt at the time, the descriptions resembled too much a modern newspaper account of the Mexican/Texas border drug wars.

The ending was unsatisfying - I was praying that the criminal would be someone else other than what was being telegraphed through the midpoint of the book on. Ay, the intermediate Pharaoh is deposed, horribly, and Horemheb presses Rai into his service. Meanwhile, Obsidian has killed one of Rai's good friends. He believes he has killed Rai as well, and moves to take control of Rai's wife and children. How Obsidian manages this is pretty obvious by the time Rai's 'death scene' rolls around. I haven't read the 2nd installment in the series. I'm hoping it's better than this one was.

Book:
Night Broken (Mercy Thompson, Book 8)
Finished: March 16
Rating & Review: ★★★★1/2. 4.5 stars. More Stefan would have gotten this book a higher rating.

Adam's ex-wife Christy is back and not only is this heifer trouble, she is bring trouble too. Apparently she gave it good to some man because now he is stalking her. He is killed her new boyfriend, and other people just to get her back. So Christy calls Adam and tells him she wants to come home, even though she knows it's not her home anymore. Mercy is the alpha's wife but Christy refuses to acknowledge that.

Mercy is torn because some members of the pack don't like her and would welcome Christy back. So when Christy does something to undermine Mercy, Mercy has to be careful how she responds. She doesn't want to come off as insecure and jealous. Besides, Christy is being stalked and should be given some slack after what she has been through. So what's Mercy to do?

Mercy can find out who this stalker is, why and take care of the bad guy so Christy can get the hell out of her house and life. Except the bad guy turns out to be a volcano god, and is stronger than than they anticipated. Did I mention he really wants Christy bad?

Mercy handled Christy with a lot more dignity that I would have. I would have sent that bad guy an email and told him where to find ms. Martha Stewart wannabe. After all, my enemy's enemy is my friend, right?

Stefan still has it bad for that little coyote girl...and I can't wait for the new developments with their bond. Why can't they break it? This is reminding me of how Bella couldn't shake Jacob even though she loved Edward completely. I know Adam is her soulmate, but I wouldn't mind if Adam became a sharer. My daughter told me Sharing is caring. So why can't Stefan have her too?

Briggs is such an awesome writer. Sometimes I listen to a book and think it's so long and I get bored. Patricia Briggs keeps it exciting, keeps the plot moving and everything is connected. It's like she doesn't want to waste even a word. Good stuff

review:
This is a very dark and violent book. I was reading this for a challenge or I probably wouldn't have finished it. This isn't my type of book. I wouldn't recommend this book for a young audience either.

Having said that, it was a different premise - both a mystery and thriller in one. First you try to figure who the killer is then when you do the suspense kicks in. Of course, unfornately, so does the violence. It is told in different points of view - the teens, the detective, and the killer. As a mystery - it had lots of twists and plot changes. As a thriller, it had the suspense in spades. As a story overall - it was done ok. I just couldn't stomach all the grusome murders of pets and people.

Book:
Kinked (Alternative Read Author "K")
Finished: March 18
Rating & Review: ★★★★1/2.

I loved this one. I had been so hesistant since Aryal had been a grumpy ass harpie! But Thea Harrison made her interesting to read along with Quentin Caeravorn.

Ever since Dragos held the games where the sentinels were chosen, Aryal has had in for Quentin. She just knew it in her bones that he was sketchy. She tried and tried to find concrete evidence of his crimes, but couldn't find proof of Quentin's offenses. That anger and frustration led Aryal and Quentin to constantly fight, both verbally and physically. After a fight which had the potential to harm Liam, Dragos' son, Dragon banished Aryal and Quentin for 2 weeks to a month.
He sent them on a mission to the Elven land of Numenlaur to find and help the remaining Elves that survived the war against Garvarel.
Being forced to work together made them confront their attraction to each other. They pushed each other to the limit and it was because they had the same kind of inner drive. Once that aggression was channeled properly, some serious fireworks exploded between the Aryal & Quentin. They made a great team both in and out of bed.

When the witch who was scavenging the Elven land broke Aryal's wings, Quentin and Aryal and the elves banded together to fight of the Witch and the shadow wolves. This final stand cemented their bond and trust, allowing Quentin & Aryal to claim each other as mates.

this one was definitely tied with Tiago & Ninianne's book as my favorite. A lot of action and great plot. Thea Harrison wrote such an entertaining story. I found myself laughing a lot in this book. I loved it.

I have waited for this book since I've read the first one last summer and even though the wait was killing me it was well worth it.
The book starts about a month or so after the events in Tainted and Lily got her summer job in the factory. Shade uses that fact to get closer to her through their daily lunches and later her self defense classes. His dominance helps her control her panic attacks and he slowly gets in her heart. There are some troubles for Lily on the way and Vida and Sawyer are doing their best to get in touch with Lily/Callie and see if she is happy. They finally meet again after around 14 years (I think) in the last pages of the book and that was one happy reunion.
We learn a lot about the rest of the original members of Last Riders and finally meet the elusive Lucky - the final and 8th original member. There were some big surprises in the end and I really hope next book is about Cash and Rachel.
