Finished: 2/15/14
Rating: 4 stars
Review: An antarctic adventure about a girl who is slowly realizing that most of the things she thinks are true are not, at least most of the things she thinks about her "Uncle" Victor. And while this plays out a lot like an action or survival tale, it really is about coming of age, growing up, finding independence from the adults who up until now have managed your life. Sym goes from a shy outcast to an amazingly brave soul, in a way that's believable (even if her situation is a bit incredible). It gets a bit long at times, but overall an excellent YA novel.

Turtlecollector Dennis I'll be reading The Case of the Stuttering Bishop (Perry Mason #9) by Erle Stanley Gardner which didn't come in at my library in time for the other game so I ended up reading the alternate. I am going to drive(25 min) to the other library tonight to pick it up instead of waiting or trying to find another alternate. The snow storm we had over the weekend messed up everyone's routines here.

The Case of the Stuttering Bishop (Perry Mason #9) by Erle Stanley Gardner by Erle Stanley Gardner
Perry Mason #9
read 2/14/14 - 3.5 stars

A book dealing with an inheritance and an imposter. This book has Perry Mason in a lot more trouble than normal in his books. He is almost set up to become accessory to murder and has to get his client off in order to save himself. I got a little bit confused as to who his actual client was at times, but I still enjoyed the book.

Turtlecollector Dennis Just waiting for lindy's review before rolling.

Review: The continuing misadventures of the Baudelaire orphans and the nefarious Count Olaf. In this the fifth installment, the orphans have run out of distance relatives and must now attend a boarding school, the Prufrock Preparatory School. While their situation is not ideal, things are looking up as the orphans make new friends with the two Quagmire triplets (the third Quagmire triplet tragically died in a fire). Unfortunately, as is to be expected, Count Olaf and his cronies are not far behind, and unfortunately as well, the Baudelaire children's bad luck has rubbed off on their new friends, who also happen to be orphans with a fortune.

Space 16

Own the Wind (Chaos, #1) by Kristen Ashley by Kristen Ashley
Chaos #1
read 2/18/14 - 4 stars

She has become a favorite author and hasn't disappointed me yet. This series is more straight forward romance with not quite so much action and fun. The daughter of the president of the motorcycle club Chaos starts out getting in lots of trouble and has to learn how to settle down her life.

I love Colleen Coble, but this book I only rated 4, wasn't as good as her other ones. Addie Sullivan was found at able age 3, on the Ca shore by the new Lighhouse keepr. He decided to tell everyone that she was his, since they couldnt' have children and he
raied her. On a dark night a stranger who is her uncle, comes and he knew whose missing daughter she was. Her mother had been on a boat with her and both were reported missing. He suggests that she become a governess for her nephew Edward. There are lots of twists and turns to this mystery of who and what she is.

Finished: 2/23/14

Review: Betsy's off to Cape Cod to return the body of a fallen friend to her werewolf pack, and face an interrogation about exactly how she died. But a castle full of werewolves are the least of her worries. Back in Minneapolis, her half-sister, the daughter of Satan, is off her rocker, and it seems that Baby John, Betsy's infant brother, has a few tricks up his sleeve as well. This series is always a fun read, and while I enjoyed this one, it seemed a bit like a filler.

Oryx and Crake (MaddAddam Trilogy, #1) by Margaret Atwood by Margaret Atwood
MaddAddam Trilogy #1
read 2/23/13 - 3 stars

This was a very odd book. At times it reminded me of 1984, Animal Farm or Brave New World. Sometimes going between past and present was a little confusing and there was a little twist at the end I was not expecting.

review:this was a great book. it always had twists and had you thinking until the last minute

bobby was a state trooper. he was also part ofna swat team. he was called out late one night to a domestic call with a gun. when he got into position he saw a man pointing a gun at his wife while holding onto his child. being a sniper for the swat team he had to report his findings. his biss didnt have time to give him the o.k. so he shot him.

now Bobby was being investigated for murder. this is because the guy he killed was a judge's son. and he was out for blood. the wife of this man had her own story. she was abducted as a child and raped for months until she was saved. eell, the man who did is got paroled and is on a mission

bobby will find out there is a pattern goin on. everyone thinks catherine, the widow, is abusing her son because he is so sick. she swears she is not doing anything but the evidence says otherwise. she will confide in bobby to help her when no one else does

bobby will find more dead bodies, he will be there at the wronf time and his co workers now think he is a killer. he got a nice offer from the judge to drop the charges. he just cant do it, now ihe is finding out deep dark secrets and finalky knows how everything ties into play. but is it too late?

Amy H (twinypa) | 426 comments are we still waiting to roll?

Turtlecollector Dennis Yes, I am waiting for Lindy's review. I am giving her a little more time, but we can use our free pass if she can't post her review in time.

Turtlecollector Dennis If Lindy doesn't get her review in today, would the team like to use the free pass now? Or wait until Thursday to roll again after Lindy posts her review and save the free pass for later?

message 87: by Theo (new)

Theo | 1929 comments I'd vote for using it now. We don't know if we'll need it in the future, so I'd rather use it than hold on to it for a day that may never come!

Did you try sending a PM to Lindy? She may have just gotten mixed up about which day to post her review.

Turtlecollector Dennis I did send her a PM, she hasn't responded yet.

message 89: by Amy (new)

Amy H (twinypa) | 426 comments I agree we should use it now just in case

Turtlecollector Dennis OK, I will use the free pass if she doesn't post her review by 6pm my time(about 55 minutes from now). It doesn't look like she's been on GR for a couple of days so maybe she is having internet problems.

Turtlecollector Dennis I am using the free pass and rolled a 6. We are now on space 24.

We can read a book that is #2 in a series, #4 in a series, #24 in a series or the alternate is a title starting with W.

Lindy (lindylee) | 375 comments Parker, robert B. Pastimes bk 18

Pastime is Robert B. Parker's electrifying masterpeice of crime fiction--a startling game of memory, desire, and danger that forces Spenser to face his own past. Ten years ago, he saved a teenage boy from a father's rage. Now, on the brink of manhood, the boy seeks answers to his mother's sudden disapearance. Spenser is the only man he can turn to.This time, it's more than a routine search for a missing person--Spenser must search his own soul.

Turtlecollector Dennis Great Lindy, the review needed to be posted yesterday. I used our free pass, though, and rolled the die. the next review needs to be posted by Thursday, Feb 27th.

We are now on space 24.

We can read a book that is #2 in a series, #4 in a series, #24 in a series or the alternate is a title starting with W.

message 96: by Turtlecollector Dennis (last edited Feb 24, 2014 10:34AM) (new)

Turtlecollector Dennis We can roll the die any time on Sundays and Thursdays. The reviews have to be posted before we can roll.

If we can all post our reviews by Saturday or Wednesday nights, then we can roll the die early in the morning on Sunday or Thursday and have more time to read our books. But if you need the extra time to finish a book, reviews can still be posted on Sunday or Thursday and we can still roll the die in the afternoon or evening.

Reading: Searching for Dragons (Enchanted Forest Chronicles, #2) by Patricia C. Wrede by Patricia C. Wrede
Finished: 2/26/14
Rating: 4 stars
Review: In the first book of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, we were introduced to Princess Cimorene, who is anything but a typical princess. In this installment, we are now introduced to King Mendanbar, her male equivalent. While Mendanbar actively works to keep his kingdom, the Enchanted Forest, running smoothly, he could care less about the pomp and circumstance of his office. And forget about getting married, especially when all princesses are silly and annoying. When Cimorene and Mendanbar are thrown together in a quest to save the Enchanted Forest and the King of the Dragons, they both realize their assumptions about the opposite sex may not always be true. Will thwarting the nefarious plans of a group of wizards lead to a romance that neither one was looking for?

The Girl in the Clockwork Collar (Steampunk Chronicles, #2) by Kady Cross by Kady Cross
Steampunk Chronicles #2
read 2/24/14 - 4 stars

As the second installment in the series, the characters are off to America to try to help their friend clear his name of murder. They are dragged back into the gang that set him up in the first place in order to get enough evidence to send the kingpin to prison. This is a pretty fun, easy to read hisotrical series. I like the juxtaposition of all the technology set in such an old-fashioned time. Steampunk has become an interesting genre for me to read. I did figure out the slight twist in the story early.
