The alternates:
Each number corresponds with the spot on the board.
For colors: The cover has to be at least 50%
For locations: As long as the book takes part at all in the given location .
For Shelves: Any book on the given shelf
For Publication Years: I'll be using how GR has it's publication date listed.
For Authors Names: The first, middle, or last name of the author is ok.
For Titles: Only the first word of the title. A, An, And, and The do not count.
So if the letter is B: The Best Day would be ok. Dear Betty would not be ok.

Mandy (thereadingdiaries) | 1095 comments Hi everyone!!! Super excited for this round.

message 5: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda Me too! It's my first time to play this game. We need to choose a captain. My only words regarding this - I don't want to be the captain.

I guess we need to find out who is willing and go fromm there.

I'm so happy to be on a team with you again, Mandy..

message 6: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Hi team!
So happy to be playing team challenges again :)

I'm in Europe, so it's really late here now, but I will check back in again tomorrow!

As for the captain spot, I'd prefer not to be the captain, but if absolutely no one else wants to do it, I can :)

Samantha McNulty Hi y'all! My first time playing; so excited!

Again, I'd prefer not to be Captain!

message 8: by Dalene (last edited Feb 04, 2014 10:14PM) (new)

Dalene (dalenekrodman) Hello, I have to check in on my kindle and my daughters computer, I have to send my computer in to be fixed again, so I cannot be captain under the circumstances. I am looking forward to this challenge and making friends.

message 9: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Hi again all!

Looks like we're only missing Jennifer to check in and then we're a full team!
Can't wait to get started :)

message 10: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (thereadingdiaries) | 1095 comments I don't mind being Captain if no one else want's too. We've all been sick the last couple of days at my house but we seem to be on the mend.

I was hoping it was the Rhonda I've played with before. =D

message 11: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Sounds like you could get the job easily, Mandy ;)

Has anyone played this before btw? I played most of last round of the 2-book one :)

message 12: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (thereadingdiaries) | 1095 comments I played last round too. This is a great challenge to help clear up some of your series books. I know I did last round. The alternate list looks great.

message 13: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda It looks like Mandy has run a successful campaign...If you need any help, Mandy, let me know and I'll do any chores you send my way.

We do need to choose a name, another task I'm no good at. I'm not very creative at all. Feel free to post your suggestions.

I think we're still missing a player - Jennifer has yet to check in, but we still have a day before we need to roll.

I'm pretty excited about the game and I'm anxious for that first roll.

I am not really good at names either, but one came to mind....

Sweet & Sassy

I will check back in later.

message 17: by Rhonda (last edited Feb 06, 2014 09:23AM) (new)

Rhonda I got these from a random lists on the internet. I'm not particularly attached to any of them, but they might lead to some great ideas.

Name Ideas:

Victorious Secret
Screaming Divas
(a roller derby team name)
Monkey Spankers (my personal favorite, which may call my character into question).
Smartinis

message 18: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Congrats Mandy! ;)

I'm really bad with names as well... I've always loved the ones that include the team number with some sort of pun, but I can't think of anything good for 5... :(

"Fives to Watch"
"Five Furious Readers" (although we're actually 6 on the team..)
"The Five, 6, 7, 8s"

On another note, should we maybe PM Jennifer since we're fast approaching the first roll?

And on a third note: where do you all live? We can roll from midnight tonight (US Central Time), so it might be handy to know who that would be easiest for - I'm CET (Central European), which means I'm 7 hrs ahead, so I'm happy to roll when I get up the next morning (usually around 9-10 am) if no one else (maybe on the West Coast?) stays up until then :)

message 19: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (thereadingdiaries) | 1095 comments I'm in California but I can't make a promise to be near the computer at that time. The hubby likes to watch tv after the kids head to bed so it's better if I don't roll. It is easy to get lost in one of the zillion tv shows we watch.
I'll send Jennifer a PM.

message 20: by Rhonda (last edited Feb 06, 2014 12:45PM) (new)

Rhonda I'm Central Time - US. It seems that Camilla rolling when she gets up is the earliest. If she rolls at 10 a.m. her time, it's 3 a.m. for me and I think it's 1 a.m. for Mandy. I don't know where anyone else on the team lives.

My vote is for Camilla to roll if she doesn't mind - as far as names for the team, I really have no preference. Should we narrow it down to 2 or 3 and then vote or something?...

message 21: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) I don't mind rolling at all tomorrow morning (and future Fridays) when I get up, if that's suitable for everybody :)

I don't mind about the name at all, so if anyone else has any preference (or idea) I'll go along with the majority :)

Let's hope we hear from Jennifer soon, but either way, I think we're fine to roll after midnight.

It's getting quite late here, so I might not check in again tonight - see you all tomorrow for the kick-off! :)

message 22: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (thereadingdiaries) | 1095 comments I'm find with Camilla being our team roller. I'm game for any name too. So let's narrow it down and vote.

Rhonda I'm all about the Monkey Spankers. I chased 4 monkeys around as a young mother. I can't catch them now, they're all grown up.

Anyway, Monkey Spankers has my vote.

I'll be back in a bit with a book choice.

Rhonda Week 1
Spot on board: 6
Read the 6th book in the Spenser series
Looking For Rachel Wallace (Spenser, #6) by Robert B. Parker by Robert B. Parker
Review: ★★★★
Looking for Rachel Wallace is another great installment in the Spenser series by Robert B. Parker. If you're old enough to remember the television show "Spenser for Hire," which was on TV in the 80s, this is the series of books on which the show was based. It is set in the late 70s to early 80s with the vocabulary, clothing styles and so on from that era. Makes me laugh to think how dorky it all was.

I think what I love most about Spenser is his self-deprecating manner, his quick wit, his machismo, and the fact that, of course, he always gets his man.

Highly recommend for a quick and satisfying mystery with a lot of humor thrown in. I'll be continuing the series without a doubt.

Dalene (dalenekrodman) Are we the Monkey Spankers? Still makes me smile and giggle. :) Plus, all the other groups seem to already be named except us, so I am curious if this is the one we all voted for.

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments I'm a bad mod and haven't gotten the thread updated lol. I'll get it when I'm back at the computer.

message 44: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) | 256 comments I have a question - for the Alternate, does the book have to be fiction? Can I read Hilarity Ensues (Tucker Max, #3) by Tucker Max It's a memoir, but I'm pretty sure that most of this is made up.

message 45: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments It doesn't have to be fiction, it just has to fit the alternate.

message 46: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda Dalene wrote: "I chased around four monkeys too... lol... and well, three of them are all grown and one is forever 15. But, I now have nine grandchildren. Five grandson, two step-grandsons and two step-grandda..."

I know what you mean. I have 3 grandsons and 5 step-grandkids, but I'm not chasing them. I leave that to their parents. It's interesting though that when grandma talks, they listen. I wonder how long that will last...

Dalene (dalenekrodman)

Finished.

Hidden Magic (Liberty Realm, #1) Hidden Magic by K.D. Faerydae

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I got this book from Netgalley. The story line is good, but there could have been more background done on Liberty and it's magical creatures. The characters are good, but again some more background especially on the Berthold and other magical creatures would have been nice. The ending was kind of abrupt, I know it is obviously the first book in a series that will not be able to be read as a stand-alone and maybe will learn more background in future books. The story goes between the world of Liberty and real world where Grace who is eight years old is and a bit about her family. Her whole family and it seems most everyone in the neighborhood love animals. Grace has a lovely heart and helps with taking care of the animals, even the elderly lady next doors rabbit. I will be looking into the next book to find out what happens next.
