Tineke (dutch-book) Hello, was a bit busy, but have already selected my book.

SS Team Vicious & Delicious

Book: G is for Gumshoe by Sue Grafton
Series # or Alternate: #7
Spot: #7
Rating: three stars.
Finished: February 11th, 2014
Review:
This review might contain a few (sort of) spoilers.

Better than I would have expected after reading the first book. Sometimes Kinsey is being stupid and I don´t believe for a second that you can run off to do some heroic deed, while a few hours ago you almost got murdered and after this you felt like a zombie. Really, that feeling doesn´t wear off so quick. Not that I have ever been almost murdered.
Also, what is it with people to go suck someone´s face off in a public place, a library for God´s sake. After something completely unrelated. It´s not like he asked her to marry him. Why always in books?! Behave yourself(in public!) Yes, this does annoy me...
Well, other than that, a nice enough book.

I keep looking at that series and thinking about starting it, but I'm trying not to start too many new ones until I get the ones I've already started under control. I've finished 7 series so far though since November. Pretty good, right??? But then let me tell you I still have 67 left to go. Yikes!

Everyone looks like they have a good pick. I feel good about this team! And thanks for posting your books for me. It'll really help on roll day. :)

It's been on my tbr shelf for awhile. So far, I'm really enjoying it. I'm glad it was set in Arizona :)

D.G. | 1 comments Trying to keep series under control is hopeless, Jennifer C.!

My next in series shelf - where I ONLY shelve the next books in a series I'm hoping to read - currently has 70 books, which means I'm reading 70 different series. And that's amazing considering that I stop reading most series after the first book - I only continue those I think really have potential!

Anyhow, The Iron Druid Chronicles is one of the few series I'm up to date and it's awesome. Lots of action and adventure.

Jennifer H I finished my book last night and just loved it :) Now I just have to post my review. I'll get that done later today.

message 63: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1 comments Yay!

Isn't it awesome when you start a series and it's so good that you wonder why you haven't started it sooner?

Well, at least you have 5 good books to read and #7 is coming out in mid year.

message 64: by Jennifer C. (new)

Jennifer C. | 1722 comments I'm also about halfway through. I'll probably finish tonight or tomorrow.

Good job Jennifer PP! :)

How is your book coming, Megan?

D.G. | 1 comments I'm seeing a downside to updating the links instead of just posting a new post with the review...it's not as easy to see the book reviews so there's not as much conversation. Or at least for those of us lazy people that don't like go back on threads, LOL!

message 69: by Jennifer C. (last edited Feb 11, 2014 05:42PM) (new)

Jennifer C. | 1722 comments We could post our review in a new thread and also copy it in our original post. Would that work better? Keeping it in the original post helps me so that I can roll early on Friday's. That way the links are all ready to go, and I can just copy, paste, and roll. Here's my review of Heartless.

This books starts out after the fire at Spencer’s house and the girls are trying to figure out if Ali is still alive or not. They all thought that they saw her during the fire, but the doctors told them that it was a hallucination due to smoke inhalation.

Emily gets a text from A telling her to go to Lancaster undercover as an Amish girl, and finds out some interesting secrets about Office Wilden.

Spencer finds out lots of secrets about her family and comes clean about losing her college fund to her surrogate mother.

Aria starts to get close to Noel and believes that Alison is trying to communicate with them from the dead. She tries to find out what Ali is trying to tell them through seances.

Hanna is having more issues with her dad and his new family and ends up in a mental hospital.

Then all the girls are arrested for a minute, but then the “real” killer is found. It’s never the real killer. It’s hard to keep these books straight because I watch the TV show too and they are completely different. There are so many people still on the TV show that have been killed off in the books. (view spoiler)

I've wanted to start that series since I saw the Jack Reacher movie. I don't think the movie was based on the first book though. I really liked it AND it was filmed where I live (Pittsburgh) so it was cool to watch. I really should just jump in. I'll have to add it to my never ending list of series that I've started. :) Bad influence!

The movie was based on book #9. I also watched the movie before I started the series so you shouldn't let that deter you. The books almost work like standalones - a couple of books here and there are tied together but overall, you could almost pick up any book in the series without missing much. It's good to start with #1 though but if you do that, please only read the blurb in this edition Killing Floor (Jack Reacher, #1) by Lee Child . Another edition had a HUGE spoiler that messed up one of the biggest surprises in the book for me. I was so mad!

Just note though that Reacher is WAY tougher than portrayed in the movie - he's 6'5", 250 lbs. and blond. He kicks ass so hard that when he's done, the bad guys don't have any ass left. And there's always a convinient hot woman for him to hook up with. The books are good if you like some action.

Jennifer C. | 1722 comments Yes, thanks for the update Megan. I just get nervous when I don't hear anything. I'll check your original post in the morning and roll if we're all done. If not, I'll post when I get off work around 5PM EST. Is the book good at least?

message 82: by Megan (new)

Megan (celtic_girl) | 586 comments Finished A Heartbeat Away, wrote my review, and updated my original post. It was okay, just not as good as I was hoping it would be. I think the only reason I liked it as much as I did was because it was a historical that took place during the Civil War - love stories set during that time.

I'm on my way to the gym. I'll post my choice later.

message 87: by Tineke (new)

Tineke (dutch-book) Difficult choice for me.
It will be either Northern Lights by Philip Pullman.
I already had this book since 2009, so could be part of a challenge to clear MTBR off all books before January 1 2014.
Or it will be The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, which is also a ringbook I participate in on BookCrossing. Will get back on my choice.

Review:
Finally read this one after a few false starts. I wasn´t mindblown by it, but I didn´t hate it either. It was okay and entertaining and I will read the rest of the series, just to see what happens next. I will probably also watch the film, just to see what has changed and what not.

Jennifer H Team Vicious & Delicious: Roll #2

Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Spot: #13
Series: #1
Finished: 2/18/2014
Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥ (wish I could give it more)

Review:
Diana Gabaldon is an outstanding story teller. Outlander is a big read - it is full of romance, adventure, magic and history. When Claire is transported from mid 20th century Scotland back to the 1740's she is surrounded by a wild country, warring clansmen, heroes, villains and much more. This book never slows down despite its length. The author manages effortlessly to also transport the reader back to this adventurous and romantic time. I think it would be hard for any reader not to be engulfed by the romance between Claire and the headstrong young Jamie Fraser. However, be warned, it is not a gentle romantic read full of swelling bosoms and hinted-at lovemaking. This book is full of raw, untamed sex and somewhat graphic violence. It's a great read and I can't wait to get onto the next installment!

Rachel (Wives of the Patriarchs, #3) by Jill Eileen Smith
Title & Author: Rachel (Wives of the Patriarchs #3) by Jill Eileen Smith
Series #: 3
Spot #: 13
Rating: 4 stars
Finished: February 20
Review:
Though the book is titled Rachel it is told from both sisters' perspectives, Leah and Rachel, which I loved. I have always felt for Leah and was glad she wasn't made into a villain. Both sisters had their issues they had to deal with and it was interesting reading this story I know so well in a different light.

Several times with the way things were told I thought "that is not right" and stopped to look it up, only to read it and realize that it could be taken that way - it was just different than the way I had always understood it to be. That's one of the things I love most about Biblical fiction, how it can take a story you know and make you see it in a fresh way.

That being said the way some things were told didn't seem right to me, such as Judah being the favorite of Leah's children when they were young. Though that may have been the case, it doesn't clearly state it one way or the other, I don't think it was. This was the reason I couldn't give the story a five star rating.

Overall I found Rachel to be an entertaining and thought-provoking read, one that I very much enjoyed. I have loved every book in this series and highly recommend them to fans of Biblical fiction.

I received a complimentary copy of this book to review. I was asked to give my honest opinion of the book - which I have done.

The Chocolate Thief (Amour et Chocolat #1) by Laura Florand
Title/Author: The Chocolate Thief by Laura Florand
Spot #: 13
Alternate: Set in France
Date finished: 2/20/14
Rating: ★★★
Review: Not sure what I feel about this book. I think it would have better without the attemps of humor which I found lame. I always like the idea of two people from different backgrounds coming together but I'm not sure I can be with someone who seems to despise everything that I am like Sylvain seemed to do with Cade. Cade for her part, seemed ashamed of her product but why should she? Not everybody can afford to spend a fortune in chocolates and they served two different markets.

Anyways, I'll read the next book and I hope I like it better. I like the author's turn of phrase and I liked Sylvain even if he was a snob.

message 94: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1 comments My book qualifies as both first in the series and because it's set in France (Eiffel Tower in the cover, LOL!) but as the France setting is more exotic, I'm using that. :)

message 95: by Jennifer C. (last edited Feb 14, 2014 08:03PM) (new)

Jennifer C. | 1722 comments Do we get bonus points for qualifying for both??? I really wish we could cause we are in dead last. :( We need a BIG roll next week. Here are the standings as of now. Team 4 still hasn't rolled yet, but if they roll 6 or higher they beat us. Can somebody blow on the dice next week for luck? LOL

Spot Team #
18 - Team 8
17 - Team 5
17 - Team 7
16 - Team 2
16 - Team 1
15 - Team 4
14 - Team 6
13 - Team 3

*I revised the list. Team 4 rolled. We're last. Pray for a 12 for the next few weeks.
