Mariab, I'm glad you volunteered for Chick Lit, but the rules say that if you do one corner, you cannot do any other string that includes that space, including vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. The way it works out, you can only do one corner, and you already have Culture. You'll see it better when Erin's chart is posted.

Erin | 32 comments I updated the one on message #98 and posted this one here so it's easier to get to and see.

Thanks sooo much Theresa for taking the time to organize all of this! I am so excited to start picking my books!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Thanks for the update, Erin! I'm picking books now so I can fit in 5 in one week. I actually read 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday last weekend, so I think 5 in a week is doable.

Theresa, I'll pretty much read anything (even if they aren't favourites), so just put me where you need me! I know there are some great gopherers if I need recommendations.

And if anyone is struggling with YA, I can recommend some great YA titles that don't read like YA ;)

Kat, how many books did you want to read? I'm headed to work, but will look at it tonight. If you keep YA and Distopian, your only corner option is Biography, but I can re-work mine to do Chick Lit so that can work for you. Did you want me to max you out at 5?

Mariab, I'll also add you to Fantasy.

Biography is completely fine by me. You can max me out, no problem :)

Book Thief - yes

Ghosts of Belfast - I don't see any cultural aspect, more action/adventure or suspense/thriller.

message 171: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Janice wrote: "Hhehehe - both books are on the list. Thanks for pointing it out to me."

I HATE GR GENRE LISTS!!! They are made by people who don't know if the book actually fits or not.

If, by reading the summary of the book, or other knowledge of it, you can tell me what cultural aspect is in Ghosts of Belfast, I'll change my ruling on it.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments About Cultural Books

Using the info below as your guideline, when you have a book you want to read for cultural and you're not sure, tell me how you think it fits, and I'll make a ruling.

Culture has been defined as:
. the total of the inherited ideas, beliefs, values, and knowledge, which constitute the shared bases of social action
. the attitudes, feelings, values, and behaviour that characterize and inform society

This is what I'm reading:
Book 1 - Chick Lit: Fly Away Home

Book 2 - Memoir: The Diary of a Young Girl

Book 3 - Historical Fiction: The Snow Child

Am I good to go with these choices? I need them for other challenges I'm doing...I don't mind waiting until the 15th. Oh, I just realized I'll be reading like a madwoman on my birthday - it's in that week =)

Now back to reading.

Thanks so much, Annette! Kat wanted to max hers out to 5 and I had a tough time trying to plan hers and mine plus trying to cover all bases. Your Action/Adventure means we have at least one player on each space.

Casceil | 2728 comments I have a copy of Joyland I think I can finish that week, in addition to the two I am down for. Looking at the book's Goodreads page, it looks as though it could count either as horror or as a thriller. We have empty slots for both, and I am not conflicted out of either one (my other two are science and romance). What do you think? If I counted Joyland as Suspense/Thriller, that would leave open the possibility that I could read something Steampunk if I have time for a fourth book. If I count Joyland as Horror, the only thing left I could do would be historical fiction.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Casceil, it would be great if you counted Joyland as a Suspense/Thriller, since that would fill another corner. You're right about Steampunk, too.

Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments Great work Theresa and Erin!

Fantasy - Siege and Storm
Dystopian - Requiem
Romance - Back to You
YA - Zom-B Underground
Bio - Bonkers: My Life in Laughs

message 189: by Kirila (new)

Kirila | 661 comments I will probably read an Agatha Christie mystery on the weekend (and they are fast reads), so I might have time for another book during the week. I am getting Dear Life: Stories from the library till the end of Feb, so I could do Short Stories. But I am not sure if I can, since I am in that column for Mystery already (but my Mystery counts towards the row, not the column).

Otherwise I could do Contemporary or YA with The Fault in Our Stars.

message 190: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I've been assuming that whatever you read blocks out anything that could be made into a row. E.g., I am reading science, and I assume that means I can't read mystery. But my science book counts for the horizontal row. If I could read mystery and have it count for the diagonal row, that would be really nice. It seems unlikely that this is allowed, but maybe we should ask for a clarification.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Kirila wrote: "I will probably read an Agatha Christie mystery on the weekend (and they are fast reads), so I might have time for another book during the week. I am getting Dear Life: Stories from..."

Kirila, the rules say that you cannot read another book on the row or diagonal as one you read, even if it doesn't count in the string you're doing. Each book read counts for only one string, which is why we need 3 on each corner to do all the possible strings.

On the positive side, you can read either Contemporary or YA, so make your choice and we can have Erin add that to the chart.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Casceil wrote: "I've been assuming that whatever you read blocks out anything that could be made into a row. E.g., I am reading science, and I assume that means I can't read mystery. But my science book counts f..."

Casceil, you've got it right. Your book counts for only one string, and you cannot read another book on any string it could be part of.

Kirila | 661 comments I stopped myself at The Lover's Dictionary, which is both YA and Contemporary. So put me down for the one that we need more.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Kirila, I'm plugging you in for YA for The Lover's Dictionary. If we end up needing Contemporary more later on, we can always move it.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I've made my book selections, either owned or borrowed from the library. I have these all in audiobooks, and all but The Doll: The Lost Short Stories in Kindle as well. I believe all of these are appropriate for the listed genres.

Chick Lit - The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
Paranormal - The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley
Crime - The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie
Short Stories - The Doll: The Lost Short Stories by Daphne du Maurier
Memoir - Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion The Firebird (The Slains, #2) by Susanna Kearsley The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercule Poirot #1) by Agatha Christie The Doll The Lost Short Stories by Daphne du Maurier Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
