SOLVED. Children's/YA novel about a fairy kidnapping [s]

I read this book about twenty-five years ago. It was in my school library. Basic gist is that there is a girl, kidnapped by fae who lived under the earth. There are a lot of other kidnappees there, most of whom are kept sedated due to overwhelmed panic at being underground. The book makes a big thing about how mentally strong she is not to take the sedatives when she starts to panic about he crushing weight of the earth above her. She eventually gets nearly adopted by the fae after learning their ways, in particular learning to walk toe to heel or something like that. Can anyone else remember this book? I've tried a dozen google searches and not turned up anything useful, but of course I remember neither the title nor the author!

I read this years ago as well. I don't remember the title or author either, but I'll keep thinking. It was definitely a young adult book, and I remember it was quite creepy but well written.

Ah, that's it for sure - thanks! I'd forgotten about the heavy Christian undertones, but of course I went to Catholic school, so everything in the library was like that.
