Kristin | 53 comments I was SO conflicted that I ended up putting The Help, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, AND The White Queen all on hold at my library!

Left it up to fate and as it turns out, The Help came in this morning. So I'll be joining in the discussion after all. I'm just afraid it won't live up to all the hype I've heard at this point.

BTW - I'm trying the "add book" links for the first time. Let's see if I did it right...

Kristin | 53 comments Wow, it did work and that was so easy! Learn something new every day!

message 604: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments LOL Good for you!

I h ave been waiting for The Help at the library forever!

I also have been waiting for The Sea of Monsters and Noah's Compass

message 605: by Kristin (new)

Kristin | 53 comments I really did not expect The Help to come in so quickly. I'm on my way to pick it up right this minute!!

(You'll notice that I'm getting addicted to linking to books. So much so that I'm pretty much posting unecessarily just for the sake of using my new talent.) LOL!

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments We all are! lol

message 607: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments BTW did you know that if you do the same thing (linking the book) for posting the cover of the book? At the bottom when you want to add a link click the button for cover.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

F1Wild I just discovered Wench: A Novel by first time novelist, Dolen Perkins-Valdez on Oprah's "10 books to watch for" list (http://www.oprah.com/omagazine/10-Boo...). It's the story of 4 slave women/masters' mistresses who are with their vacationing owners in the free North. It looks like it would be a great read, especially after reading Stocket's book, The Help. I just downloaded the Kindle version and look forward to the opportunity to read it!

message 612: by Lianne (last edited Feb 03, 2010 07:04PM) (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) It's a toss up between Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude and Berenson's The Silent Man as my next read...I'm trying to save Berenson for next week (need something to read on the train when I go home for Reading Week) so I guess it's going to be Marquez's book I'll be reading next (since I lent my copy of Water for Elephants to my friend) xD

message 613: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I'm going to listen to Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and read Island of Lost Girls A Novel by Jennifer McMahon next. I'm especially excited for that one because the story is set in Vermont and that's where I live...

Fiona, I have been putting off reading The Book Thief for literally years. I have it and have good intentions of getting to it, but I'm really afraid that I'm not going to like it as much as all the rave reviews suggest. I did start it a couple of times, just the first few pages and didn't immediately get drawn in, but, of course, I know that's not necessarily a fair assessment.

Wench: A Novel looks interesting - never heard of it before now.

I just signed up for the giveaway on this book.

message 618: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) Gruen's Water for Elephants is definitely next on my list now. When I get home, I'll likely read the next installments of the Percy Jackson series since my brother managed to get the rest of the volumes in the series (save the last one since it's still in hardcover) =)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1489 comments I've been reading some good books lately! These were 5* for me: [image error] The Help by Kathryn Stockett and these were 4* Lady of Quality by Georgette Heyer The Elegant Gathering of White Snows by Kris Radish

Hope the next ones are as good: Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler Dream Man by Linda Howard Blue Smoke by Nora Roberts The Big Over Easy (Nursery Crime, #1) by Jasper Fforde

message 625: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Cindy wrote, "Anxious to hear how you like Island of Lost Girls; it's been waiting on my bookshelf forever!"

I read it this weekend, and I thought it was good. Every chapter jumps between present day and 1993 which made it very interesting for me. I liked it, but I never really connected with the main character.

Susanna (jb_slasher) I'm putting Atlas Shrugged down again since I'm between parts. Another breather is in order so I'm picking up The Help at this point.

KHoopMan (eliza_morgan) | 151 comments I am overwhelmed by my TBR bookshelf (yes, it's an entire bookshelf) that I am surfing Goodreads instead. I try to plan out my next read, but there is nothing quite as exciting as perusing my books and selecting what's next!! I am narrowing it down between Cloud Atlas, Farenheit 451 or The Time Machine.

message 639: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I haven't read Cloud Atlas or The Time Machine (yet! both are on Mt. TBR), but I must say that Fahrenheit 451 is an exceptional read that I would highly recommend....a must-read for all book lovers.

message 640: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 510 comments Eliza, I agree wholeheartedly with Charity about Fahrenheit 451. It's one of my favorite books and does definitely speak to the book lover in us. I used it in a unit I taught on book censorship.

I did like The Big Over Easy - my hubby couldn't figure out what I found so funny, but I just got wrapped up in seeing how Fforde treated the old nursery rhyme characters. So I think I'll continue the series - I got hooked on Jasper Fforde's writing when I listened to his Thursday Next books.

Michelle I finished reading Geek Love and to be honest I really didn't like it. It's an original story so it gets points for that, but I hated all the characters and found it all a bit too disgusting. I can't believe I'm even saying that, because I love disgusting things, but this was a bit too much for me. But you should read it and see what you think!

message 648: by Kristin (new)

Kristin | 53 comments Marti, that sounds like a fun weekend/vacation!! good for you!

I don't know what to read next... I'll be finishing The Help this weekend. I have The White Queen and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo both on hold at the library but goodness knows how long they could take to come in... Hmmm... thinking maybe I'll pick up Outlander???

Does that sound like a decent follow-up/change of pace from The Help?

Kim, that's too bad that you didn't like it :( I actually just found a copy of the book at Goodwill for 1.99...I'm hoping to read it soon, but I have soooo many books that I want to read!

message 650: by Patricia (new)

Patricia I just picked up three books from the library:

The River Why by David James Duncan
Mrs. Mike by Benedict & Nancy Freedman
Await Your Reply by Dan Chaon

I have to finish The Postmistress first, then decide which one to read next. I'm not sure why I picked up The River Why - flyfishing?
