I was SO conflicted that I ended up putting The Help, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, AND The White Queen all on hold at my library!Left it up to fate and as it turns out, The Help came in this morning. So I'll be joining in the discussion after all. I'm just afraid it won't live up to all the hype I've heard at this point.
BTW - I'm trying the "add book" links for the first time. Let's see if I did it right...
LOL Good for you! I h ave been waiting for The Help at the library forever!
I also have been waiting for The Sea of Monsters and Noah's Compass
I really did not expect The Help to come in so quickly. I'm on my way to pick it up right this minute!! (You'll notice that I'm getting addicted to linking to books. So much so that I'm pretty much posting unecessarily just for the sake of using my new talent.) LOL!
BTW did you know that if you do the same thing (linking the book) for posting the cover of the book? At the bottom when you want to add a link click the button for cover.
I just discovered Wench: A Novel by first time novelist, Dolen Perkins-Valdez on Oprah's "10 books to watch for" list (http://www.oprah.com/omagazine/10-Boo...). It's the story of 4 slave women/masters' mistresses who are with their vacationing owners in the free North. It looks like it would be a great read, especially after reading Stocket's book, The Help. I just downloaded the Kindle version and look forward to the opportunity to read it!
It's a toss up between Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude and Berenson's The Silent Man as my next read...I'm trying to save Berenson for next week (need something to read on the train when I go home for Reading Week) so I guess it's going to be Marquez's book I'll be reading next (since I lent my copy of Water for Elephants to my friend) xD
I'm going to listen to
and read
next. I'm especially excited for that one because the story is set in Vermont and that's where I live...

In fact, I'm already thinking about this year's Summer Reading List because I need to figure out how to get through the rest of the winter ..."Fiona, I have been putting off reading The Book Thief for literally years. I have it and have good intentions of getting to it, but I'm really afraid that I'm not going to like it as much as all the rave reviews suggest. I did start it a couple of times, just the first few pages and didn't immediately get drawn in, but, of course, I know that's not necessarily a fair assessment.

Michelle wrote: "I'm going to listen to

Kristin wrote: "F1Wild wrote: "I just discovered Wench: A Novel by first time novelist, Dolen Perkins-Valdez on Oprah's "10 books to watch for" list (http://www.oprah.com/omagazine/..."I just signed up for the giveaway on this book.
Gruen's Water for Elephants is definitely next on my list now. When I get home, I'll likely read the next installments of the Percy Jackson series since my brother managed to get the rest of the volumes in the series (save the last one since it's still in hardcover) =)
I LOVED Life of Pi!!! Let us know what you thought when ur done.Catamorandi wrote: "I am reading Life of Pi right now. Next I will read Rebecca."
As I go up the list, I'm smiling at all the books you all have that I have & am just dyin' to read...I just got Island of Lost Girls: A Novel.Cindy wrote: "Michelle wrote: "I'm going to listen to

I've been reading some good books lately! These were 5* for me:

and these were 4*
Hope the next ones are as good:
Cindy wrote, "Anxious to hear how you like Island of Lost Girls; it's been waiting on my bookshelf forever!"I read it this weekend, and I thought it was good. Every chapter jumps between present day and 1993 which made it very interesting for me. I liked it, but I never really connected with the main character.

, thought it was witty and quirky. I keep meaning to get to the next one in that series, The Fourth Bear.
I'm putting Atlas Shrugged down again since I'm between parts. Another breather is in order so I'm picking up The Help at this point.
Next on my list is Geek Love: A Novel, it's finally available at the library. It better be worth the wait!
Kim wrote: "Next on my list is Geek Love: A Novel, it's finally available at the library. It better be worth the wait!"I've been thinking about reading that book soon as it is available at my library also. Please let us know how you like it!
Working on A Reliable Wife, next up is Lacuna and Firefly Lane....haven't told my husband yet that I am taking three books on vacation with me next week.
Reading Pride and Prejudice hoping to finish soon. Then will read The Poisonwood Bible and then Vengeance in Death.
The next books on my list are Everything That Rises Must Converge by Flannery O'Connor and The Documents in the Case by Dorothy L. Sayers.
How is the Bryson book. I am still waiting for the Larsson book . I think I will have to buy it. I am #67 at the library.
Almost finished with the two listed above, so the next books on my list are The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe and (if I can get to it before it is due)July's People by Nadine Gordimer
Next on my list: Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas
The STory of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
and
The Girl With No Shadow by Joanne Harris
I am overwhelmed by my TBR bookshelf (yes, it's an entire bookshelf) that I am surfing Goodreads instead. I try to plan out my next read, but there is nothing quite as exciting as perusing my books and selecting what's next!! I am narrowing it down between Cloud Atlas, Farenheit 451 or The Time Machine.
I haven't read Cloud Atlas or The Time Machine (yet! both are on Mt. TBR), but I must say that Fahrenheit 451 is an
exceptional
read that I would highly recommend....a must-read for all book lovers.
Eliza, I agree wholeheartedly with Charity about Fahrenheit 451. It's one of my favorite books and does definitely speak to the book lover in us. I used it in a unit I taught on book censorship.
Kathy wrote: "BJ, I really enjoyed The Big Over Easy, thought it was witty and quirky. I keep meaning to get to the next one in that series, The Fourth Bear..."I did like The Big Over Easy - my hubby couldn't figure out what I found so funny, but I just got wrapped up in seeing how Fforde treated the old nursery rhyme characters. So I think I'll continue the series - I got hooked on Jasper Fforde's writing when I listened to his Thursday Next books.
Michelle wrote: "Kim wrote: "Next on my list is Geek Love: A Novel, it's finally available at the library. It better be worth the wait!"I've been thinking about reading that book soon as it is ava..."
Michelle I finished reading Geek Love and to be honest I really didn't like it. It's an original story so it gets points for that, but I hated all the characters and found it all a bit too disgusting. I can't believe I'm even saying that, because I love disgusting things, but this was a bit too much for me. But you should read it and see what you think!
Eliza wrote: "Thanks to Charity, Kathy and Brielle...I'm almost done with Farenheit 451 and loving it!!!"So happy to hear it, Eliza!
Next up for me is the book The Spare Room, which I won as a first reads. Then for vacation which starts today at 3, I have 3 Kristen Hannah books to read and a couple of historical romances to round out my vacation bonanza....
Marti, that sounds like a fun weekend/vacation!! good for you!I don't know what to read next... I'll be finishing The Help this weekend. I have The White Queen and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo both on hold at the library but goodness knows how long they could take to come in... Hmmm... thinking maybe I'll pick up Outlander???
Does that sound like a decent follow-up/change of pace from The Help?

Kim, that's too bad that you didn't like it :( I actually just found a copy of the book at Goodwill for 1.99...I'm hoping to read it soon, but I have soooo many books that I want to read!
