This little boy gets appendicitis and stays home from school for a while. I think his name began with an "S". It's around Christmas and there is a priest, mince-meat pies and carolers involved. He has an annoying sister named Tilly I think. He leaves his house when his mom and sister are out caroling to play/ find this big white dog. He get lost, and his mom and the carolers go looking for him. He finds the dog, makes it back home and everyone is happy! I read it in the 90s when I was under 10, but it seemed like an old book. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

bookel | 4028 comments Still trying to find it. I found a Christmas and lost dog story...

Politi, Leo. The Nicest Gift. Scribner, 1973. Carlitos lives in the Mexican-dominated barrio of East Los Angeles, enjoying its picturesque life with his dog Blanco, until Blanco gets lost.

It is Christmas time in the Barrio of East Los Angeles. The mercado is busy with activity, people are dancing and singing; the toy shop is brimming with pinatas, puppets, and other toys. Carlitos, his mother, and his dog Blanco are there too, visiting with their many friends and looking at the beautiful toys. But suddenly Blanco disappears!
Cover.

Is your book a picture book or chapter book?

Elena | 3 comments Oh wow thanks bookel, that's not it though.
I read it around 1997 butI feel like it was a lot older. It had chapters and pictures. The dog was a stray, it was huge white and fluffy.
My mom has no clue and no one at the library could remember. I tried internet searching every possible combination of events! I would really love to find it again, reading that book was one of my dearest childhood memories. Thank you for all your help everyone!

bookel | 4028 comments Desperate Search by Matt Christopher
Don't think this was a match either; it was at Christmas time though!
Kirkus Review: Two old enemies, Ginger the dog and Whitey the cat, become fast friends when they're locked in the back of a delivery truck together and have to make their way back home through strange territory full of threatening dogs. Meanwhile Tommy and Jamie set out on Tommy's pony Buck in search of their missing pets only to get lost themselves in a late December blizzard. Boys, dog, cat and pony all make it back home in time for Christmas turkey -- winding up a real holiday tail thumper for Christopher's easy reading following.

The dog is big, shaggy and white.
There's a girl named Tilly.

The only consolation was that his mother said he had better not go back to school yet. Raymond hadn't gone back either; his ankle seemed to be a long time getting better. December had come, and they hadn't seen each other for weeks.

The doctor took Sprout's temperature. "I think your Mrs. Chad was right," he said. "This is the third case I've had today. Keep him warm. Light diet. Let me know if there are any further developments. I'll call again later in the week. Cheer up ...

"In Sprout and the dogsitter he is seven and in his opinion quite sensible enough to join the Vicar's carol-singing party; a bout of 'flu damps his enthusiasm for a time but his father's timely gift of a duffle coat brings out the explorer in him — so ..."

"WAYNE, JENIFER Sprout and the Dogsitter. II. Margaret Palmer ... Though a bout of flu temporarily lays him low he bounces back in time to join the carol singers on Christmas Eve. The vicar, who has ..."

So he doesn't have appendicitis after all? (He does have a big appetite however.)

There's a series of Sprout books.

bookel | 4028 comments Happy happy! I enjoy seeing a happy reunion with a childhood book. Once I stopped searching for appendicitis and went methodically through the dogs--fiction on worldcat it came up. :)

Plenty of copies see bookfinder.com and the separate bookseller sites, ebay etc.
