Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Finished: 2/18/2014
Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥ (wish I could give it more)
Englishman: Captain Jonathan Randall is an Englishman
Frog: Losgann, whose elegant name actually meant "Frog" (p. 315)
Dream: I awoke from my floating dream (p.33)
Bridge: enough light to show a stone bridge (p. 52)
Castle: towed us both into the castle (p. 54)
Diana Gabaldon is an outstanding story teller. Outlander is a big read - it is full of romance, adventure, magic and history. When Claire is transported from mid 20th century Scotland back to the 1740's she is surrounded by a wild country, warring clansmen, heroes, villains and much more. This book never slows down despite its length. The author manages effortlessly to also transport the reader back to this adventurous and romantic time. I think it would be hard for any reader not to be engulfed by the romance between Claire and the headstrong young Jamie Fraser. However, be warned, it is not a gentle romantic read full of swelling bosoms and hinted-at lovemaking. This book is full of raw, untamed sex and somewhat graphic violence. Its a great read and I can't wait to get onto the next installment!

I love this series! I'm soon going to be reading the seventh book. Really glad to hear you enjoyed. I've got many friends on GR that either love it or hate it.

Review: this is #4 of the Guardians of Eternity. This one introduces Fae and the Commission into the mix. The Commission doles out justice to the supernatural world. Anna Randal falls under Conde Cezar's spell over 200 yrs ago during a night of passion. Now she has found out where he is and she wants answers. However, the Fae have something else in kind. This one was just as good as the last book. The story seems to be picking up and taking shape. Anna Is a strong character who is not unwilling to stand up to vampire, Cezar, when needed. Looking forward to the next installment.
Frog......but the sound of distant frogs.... P104
Fictional Place Instead she had well and truly fallen down Alice's rabbit hole. P115 or The mists of Avalon were no myth. P58
statue .....to recognize that the marble statues came straight from a Grecian temple......P81
fairy "The Queen of Fairies." P44
Castle ....the crumbling ruins of the ancient castle.... P203

Great job, Team!! I will take a look at the spreadsheet and see what needs to be claimed on Friday.

I'm impressed that you finished Outlander in less than a week. Nice job!

Sorry to hear that Dusty. I hope you get some free time to yourself soon.

These are the items I came up with that seem to be the best things to look for:
Thief/English
Monster/Bear
Girl in Red/Story
Bread/Apple

read 2/19/14 - 3 stars
Not sure why this made the best books of 2013 list I am reading from. It was an OK book, but I found it too repetitive when she keeps reliving her life over and over and changing the outcomes. I think it would have been better to be a little shorter and some of the shorter sections could have been taken out.
Items claimed:
fairy pg 81- "...both liked fairy stories..."
frog pg 45- "...a jar of frogs or worms..."
unusual name pg 37- "...French mastiff named Bosun."
flying machine pg 419- ...two German fighter planes from the..."
castle pg 343- "...a small castle that they were allowed..."

I'm impressed that you finished Outlander in less than a week. Nice job!"
I just couldn't put it down :)

I guessed on what other items to claim, so if someone has strategy or other items they would like me to change it too before the post tomorrow let me know.
week 3: Frog & Castle

Read 2/19
3 stars
Review: The character details of this one seemed a bit thin. The plot was fine but I just didn't find the characters so beliveable. They were goal orientated detail people who just up and went on an adventure to Fairie on a whim. It didn't seem to fit. There should have been more explanations or more of a resistance.
Frog: pg 182 Danice sounded like a dying frog had taken up residence in her throat.
Castle: pg 185 ... I am going to parade my naked ass around this castle for the whole world to see!
Fairy: pg 74 "Then when you say 'Fae', you mean like...like a fairy?"
Unusual name: Main Character- Danice
Apples: pg 131 Of apples, but it wasn't fruity.

The SPREADSHEET is updated!
Have a good night and I'll see you in the morning :)

Thanks sis. You picked it right on for me. This is my least favorite one out of the series. Could of been writin better.
My son is out of surgery. They had to cut his arm from wrist almost to elbow to relieve the swelling from the injury an the cast to tight. Has to stay in for five days. Will check back in morning. Thanks everyone.

I'm also going to claim:
Hunter
Rat (if Dawn approves) or Horse
Short Person or Story (or the elusive Fictional Place if I come across it)

Not sure what I'll be reading yet. Need to go find out what I'm looking for in my other team challenges and then I'll make a decision. I have a couple I want to read. Will see if I can make those work.

I can find thief or Englishman (it's set in England). Just tell me which one is better for the group. I can also find bone, tree, story and bear.

I am about 1/4 done and have found the 5 things I originally wanted to claim this week: tree, bone, Englishman, rat and dream.
If I find a fictional place in the rest of the book, I may switch it with dream.

Hexed by Kevin Hearne
Finished: 2/22/14
Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥
Fairy: Iron elementals like to eat faeries (p. 148)
Rat: They breed like rodents (p. 148)
Fictional Place(Mos Eisley): Ever notice how Apache Boulevard is a lot like Mos Eisley? (p. 67)
Tree: dodge behind my mesquite tree (p. 21)
Bone: screeched in that bone-shuddering register (p. 24)
Kevin Hearne is one of the best authors I have come across in a long time. His series about a 21 century old Druid (the last of them) and his Irish Wolfhound in current-day Arizona is priceless. The droll timing of his humor vs. danger vs. politics is perfect. This is one of the best developed worlds I have seen in a long time.
If you have access to mp3 player or Audible, I would highly recommend that you listen to the books. The narrator, Luke Daniels, has all of the characters down just like I would think of them. His depiction of Oberon (the Druid's dog) is hilarious and heart-lifting!

Honestly, I really want to claim girl in red because it's been one of the hardest items to find for me. I've been running into many places that have dream in abundance. I promise next I'll claim it.

Review:This book takes an interesting view of undead that I've ever seen in a book. The book falls into young adult genre yet still very enjoyable read all the same. Katie, our heroine, is still grieving over parents death and transitioning to life in Paris with her grandparents. Meeting Vincent brings lightness to her heart that wasn't there before. Vincent is a mystery to her and thensome until she learns the truth. Can she accept Vincent completely? Your answers await you in Die For Me.
Items Claimed
People~Fairy:Just call me Fairy Godmother. Page 10
Animals~Bird:Time seemed to stop as he hovered in midair like a giant bird of prey. Page 19
Misc~Girl in Red:Cover
Props~Tree:It is filled with ancient tress. Page 13
Bonus~Bone:Her strawberry blond hair was in a short pixie cut that only a face with her strikingly high cheekbones could carry off. Page 10

Review: Another great book by Patricia Briggs. She has a way of making you love her characters. Charles and Anna are sent to Seattle by Bran to meet all the Alpha/Packs of Europe to discuss/negotiate coming out to humans. Things don't always go as planned especially when you have a Fae involved. Interesting how Anna keeps being underestimated. Can't wait for book 3.
Tree She used the trees in the back as barriers to keep him at bay when he got too close. p17
Bone the wolf who'd faced off with Chastel, tossed a bone on his plate. p69
Englishman "Anna, this is Arthur Maddok, Master of the Isles - the British equivalent of the Marrok." p68
Monster "There are a few of us in Africa and even fewer in Asia, where there are other monsters who don't like us very well." p29
Fictional character "Because I am he, of course. King Arthur. It is my destiny to be high king." p194
*edit - to read week 5 instead of 4 :)
