I suggest My Familiar Stranger by Victoria Danann
This is the first book in the series, but there is no cliffhanger, so readers can choose to continue the series (or not). There is a bit of Romance included. Plus it is free on all ebook retailers, so members interested in reading it wouldn't have to spend any money.
I recommend second book in "The Edge" series, "Bayou Moon" by Ilona Andrews (first book in series, "On The Edge" was read 2009/11/01 -- 2009/11/30).
Liz, look at the upper right hand corner of the comment box and you'll see "add book/author". Click on that and it will give you a dialog box where you can enter a book title (and choose to have it listed by tite or by cover) or an author. Then just hit "add" and it should work!

this looks interesting
I'm looking forward to
byMarjorie M. LiuI've thoroughly enjoyed the first four books in this series.
Wicked Wind, by Sharon Kay. First book in the series and the second is already out. A lot of Action, a lot of romance and sex (classy), and lots of world building. Takes place in Chicago too. Very well written, plot and pace. Book two is even better.

Authors, do not list your own books."Probably this was already done, but my favorite in this category will always be Emma Bull's War for the Oaks.
