I know!! I love those old SIM games where you city build. He won't play those, either.

Hubby used to play empire building games so that one might hit the sweet spot.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Yep, we have 7 wonders duel. One of my favorite 2 player games, I really like it.

The only video game I played recently (in the past months) was the sega genesis version of Pirates! Gold:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MURaA...

Pirates are awesome.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments The game I downloaded (and was trying to download) is Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition. Baldur's Gate 2 and the expansions are my all time favorite games and this has some new "stuff" and a new expansion.

Of course they also corrected a couple of glitches I'd learned to use in my favor, LOL.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I've got Baldur's Gate on my Steam wish list- I'm hoping it'll go on sale for a decent price. I already have a copy but it's on CD and I want a digital copy.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I played Baldur's gate when it came out back in the '90s and then got Baldur's Gate 2 when it was released. It is (in my opinion of course) the best RPG ever released. I have played ir many times and you can find new things in it time after time. Now with the "enhanced" edition I'm already finding new dungeons, monsters characters (including playable NPCs you can add to your party). It was $20 so I snapped it up and am doing a bit of the obsessive play I did years ago.

Baldur's Gate was good and it does have a story that carries through but Baldur's Gate 2 is a huge game with hours and hours (and more hours) of playability.

I love Small World! Haven't played it in years. That's one of the problems with having so many games... So many get neglected :-(

message 113: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) | 120 comments I've been thinking about getting the Small World game through the Amazon app store. I have realized that I prefer electronic games that are based on table top board games. LOL.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments If you have an iPad, I highly recommend the Galaxy Truckers app! Probably my favorite electronic board game adaption.

message 115: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) | 120 comments Hmm, I've not ever played the table top edition. I am in the Amazon world, but I see that they have it in the app store for Android.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments We finally played 7 Wonders Duel last night. It was fun! If a little complicated. I know we didn't manage to do everything.

It does make me want to get a new single player game. :D

message 119: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) | 120 comments I bought 7 Wonders Duel last week. We have not yet played, however. My S.O. insisted that we play Splendor while I was tired. He finally beat me. LOL.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments We tried a new social / party game yesterday, Snake Oil Card Game. It had a similar feel to cards against humanity, but a fun and different twist.

Each round one player is the customer (role rotates) and they draw a customer card. Maybe they are a Diva, or a Construction Worker, or a Vampire, or a Geek, there are lots of roles. Everyone else has a hand of cards with nouns on them... The game is to pitch a product to the customer using two cards from your hand. So for instance, in one round the customer was Santa and I had "Finger" and "Blanket" in my hand, so I pitched a blanket that would keep his fingers warm while he flew his sleigh.

It gets pretty random, as there are tons of noun cards. Sometimes you have nothing that makes sense, so you just have to throw some cards together and try to make a good sales pitch. Once everyone makes their pitch, the customer picks the product he would buy and that person wins the role card. First to 5 cards wins, or you can play as long or as little as you want.

I don't know if I'm explaining this well at all.. But it was super fun. We were all cracking up the whole time, it was nice because everyone really got into the whole salesman role and got really creative.

message 121: by HomeInMyShoes (last edited May 31, 2016 02:08PM) (new)

HomeInMyShoes ^It sounds entertaining.

My favorite board game was still the one we used to play at family gatherings. Alll the cousins would get together and play Slang Teasers. It was like the original Balderdash, only way funner for some reason. It might have been because no one really played to win and the definitions we would come up with. Generally we all declared victory whenever we could make whomever had to read out the definitions laugh.

That Snake Oil Card Game sounds like we'd have just as much fun with it.

message 122: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh, Dawn, I want to try that. Is it nsfw. or clean?

message 123: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments It's totally clean / safe for work! I guess it's more like apples to apples than cards against humanity in reality. We just don't own apples so I was thinking nsfw cards against humanity when I described it.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Okay so the last time I used one of my credit cards was at Steam. I get a notification today that there have been 2 fraudulent charges on it from GA (I live in Nashville). I don't know if Steam was hacked or what but...crap.

Cancelled the card and so far I haven't found anything on another card. Have to watch the statements for a while. Praying it's not some full blown identity theft.

sigh.

Did you contact Steam?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments No. I had trouble getting the first game I bought from them to work and it was like trying to reach the king of the universe. I'm not sure it was them anyway. It's just that that's the only place I used the card in months. I suppose there could be other ways "whoever" got the number. I just don't know how it happened.

I stopped at a Boston Market once and got dinner. The next week my card was used in Miami, FL for all types of things.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I'm checking. One of my checks didn't arrive for a payment this month (yes I still pay by check). If it's that card I suppose someone could have gotten the number that way.

That happened to my boss! Somehow someone was able to get their hands on a business check. They then made numerous false withdrawals.

The guys were caught but only because they got greedy. :(

message 135: by [deleted user] (new)

I was born in 1987.

20 years ago, there appeared games like Resident Evil, Tomb Raider and Quake, and I guess those defined the modern video/computer game. Atari games are too hardcore for me, but I'm fine with NES and afterwards. I believe the last revolutionary and must have games were Unreal & Unreal Tournament. Basically, I would not need any game that appeared after the year 2000.

Yes, there are GTA and The Elder Scrolls, but the first games of the series (insert plural here) already appeared during the 90ies. Only the graphics got better.

message 136: by Felina (new)

Felina My brother is relatively wealthy and he goes through hobby phases. For a while it was Magic, then homemade beer then Guitar Hero. When he picks a hobby the obsession lasts for maybe a year and he throws hundreds of dollars into it. This years current iteration is table top gaming. He has like 50 of them. Whenever we get together that's what we do now. I prefer co-op games because I don't like being competitive.

My favorite is Eldritch Horror! I also enjoy Pandemic, Puerto Rico and I'm just now realizing a lot of games I don't know the names of. I always just tell my brother I like the one with the beans, or the ogres and he knows what I mean.

Table top gaming counts in this thread, right?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Far as I know....

I'm back to having a weekly D&D (second edition) game now and enjoying it "a whole bunch". I'm getting back into my miniatures again. (This is not really a bad thing as I have hundreds of unpainted minis I'd saved back when i was playing regularly).

Yeah. CoolInc sells them for $49.99 when in stock. The cheapest one at Amazon was $79.99. :-(

message 144: by [deleted user] (new)

I discovered the old Fighting Fantasy series of solo RPG gamebooks some days ago:

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain (Fighting Fantasy Reissues 1, #1) by Steve Jackson

I'm still quite amazed something like this was ever produced. I read Choose Your Own Adventure style books as a child, but these books have (in most cases) a classical fantasy setting and dynamic elements like turn- and stat-based combat and an inventory.

By the way, they are also quite practical, since you can both play a RPG and work towards your reading challenge at the same time ;-).

Thaddeus White | 69 comments I used to love Lone Wolf gamebooks. Must have about 20 of them.

Incidentally, if you're into that sort of thing you might want to check out Project Aon. It basically makes them available for free, with the author's blessing.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I've been stalking Cool, Inc for a copy of Mice & Mystics. Also Plaid Hat Games and Amazon.

So Amazon now has a copy for $59.99 - which is $10 MORE than Cool, Inc but CI is still showing out of stock.

Plaid Hat Games is in stock but for $75.

Should I buy the Amazon one? Is this game worth $60??

Just started Flight from the Dark.

I already have the impression that the combat, skill and inventory system is much more sophisticated than the ones utilized in the Fighting Fantasy series.

message 150: by Thaddeus (new)

Thaddeus White | 69 comments It works pretty well, from fuzzy memory.

If you enjoy that, you might also like the Destiny Quest series, although you'll have to actually buy those books.

(Should stress I have nothing to do with that. And it depresses me I'm better at promoting other people's books than my own :p ).
