Just finished part one, I am enjoying this book. I really like the character Charlie.(view spoiler)[He is a very young boy who is been exposed to more mature matters then he needs to be.i'm glad he's made friends with Patrick and Sam, I believe they will be good guides. I think good friendship is always a good thing especially when you're a teenager.. I had completely forgot that Patrick was gay, so I have obviously forgotten a lot of the movie (hide spoiler)]

I just finished. What a powerful book. It was more like the movie than I expected. And what an ending. Can't say too much (my kindle won't let me use the spoiler tags), but this novel was so full of emotion. Charlie was great and his struggle with school, life, friends was so real. I like the epistolary style. I think it made the book more powerful.

It is such a quick read. I'm over halfway through, I will finish in the morning. I think because I am a parent of teenagers, I see a lot of these books a bit differently.in a good way, I see it from the viewpoint of the teenager, and that of the parent. I just think the teenage years and your early 20s are the best! It's also super cool being a mom to teenagers, I know a lot of people don't feel that way, but I do☺️

Yeah, that part was really funny. Mary Elizabeth would have driven me crazy. She was nice, but the constant talking would drive me crazy.

Yeah I agree! I don't think her and Charlie suit each other really.

Not at all. He's too thoughtful but not forward with his thoughts. She's thoughtful but not in the same way.

LOL, just finished reading the car trip to Christmas. I have three kids, around the same ages, and the fighting. It was just so very true!this book is just so spot on!(view spoiler)[I was sad that Patrick and Sam didn't call Charlie on his birthday. I think he would be in a better situation if his family was more open with one another. I know my kids don't tell me everything, but I do know what they're up to,because I try really hard not to judge! (hide spoiler)]

Just finished part two, don't know why I thought I was over halfway done, because I am not :-)(view spoiler)[Charlie thinks way too much, and feels way too much. I don't like the direction this is headed in with him feeling sad, he is just such a great kid, you don't want that for him.Sam and Patrick are just being teenagers, I believe they care about him, but they care about themselves as well. I just wish he had someone to really talk to, besides whoever he is writing this letter to. (hide spoiler)]

Mary Elizabeth would drive the best of us crazy!(view spoiler)[This is why you don't date someone in your group of friends. Nothing can end well,. I was glad to see Charlie was there for his sister when she needed him. I wish he could confide in those around him, because I think they would be there for him. (hide spoiler)]

Charlie is one of the most devoted characters I've ever read. But not in an annoying way. It's just who he is. And I loved that about him. (view spoiler)[I agree, Berit. The whole dating a friend thing is not likely to go well. Particularly when you already know you don't really feel the same way about them as they do about you. And I think the author did a wonderful job showing how Charlie can be so devoted but is unable to open himself up to others the way they do to him. I like how his letters start to hint at him opening up and seeing things that caused him to be the way he is. If that makes sense. (hide spoiler)]

I'm done! All I have to say is wow!did anyone figure out who he was writing the letters to? I understood what Sam was saying to him at the end about needing to be there. I really want to see what happens to him after all this. No. Not sure who the letters were to. I had a few different ideas but I never felt any of them were right.

I know this sounds like a simple answer but I think the letters might be to us, the reader? Because you're willing to read the book meaning you're willing to listen to Charlie, and I'm not sure but he always addresses the letters 'dear friend' so he obviously doesn't know the person and there's no indication as to who the person he's talking to is throughout the entire book so I think they were meant to be addressed to a random person, being us, because a stranger is likely to listen :)

I just finished this book, and I think i cried the most I have for a book in so long. It was beautiful and sad in so many ways. I loved Charlie, Patrick and Sam and I would've loved more to read but the way so many things were jammed into this one book was so well done and I feel as though this was one of my favourite more sad contemporary reads.

As someone who grew up after smoking laws were changed to stop people from smoking in public buildings, it feels a bit strange reading about Charlie being able to smoke in a classroom with his teacher. Speaking of his teacher, I really like him. I have a feeling that something big will happen between Charlie's sister and her boyfriend, like maybe she'll get pregnant. (hide spoiler)]

I like how there are so many problems addressed in the book but on the surface I'm not finding it all that awesome. I also got spoiled for one of the plot points yesterday which I'm a bit disappointed about, but my friends told me there was other stuff to uncover so I'm not that devastated. (hide spoiler)]

I was spoiled about the molestation thing so that didn't come as a surprise to me, but I don't think it would've redeemed the whole novel for me. Part 1:

Charlie, the main character, has just started high school and was scared at first. However, he met two upperclassmen named Sam and Patrick (otherwise known as "Nothing") who have made him feel accepted and hangs out with them often. His family life isn't all that complicated, except when he saw his older sister get hit by a boy that she was dating at the time. Her parents forbid her from seeing him, but she still danced with him at the homecoming dance. Homecoming was an interesting experiencing for Charlie. He arrived at a party that was full of people and was offered a brownie, which just so happened to be a "special" brownie. As reality distorts for Charlie, he asks for a milkshake, which Sam makes for him. During this time Patrick calls Charlie a "wallflower" because he is always watching, listening, and understanding the situation that he is in.

Patrick and Brad's relationship is discussed. It started one time at a party when Brad claimed he was too drunk and then it happened again when he claimed that he was too high. This pattern continued for over seven months until Brad finally said that it had to be a secret when they hooked up, but he would no longer become too drunk or high when they spent time together. Winter break is approaching and Charlie's group decides to play Secret Santa. He received a full suit and a typewriter. He also got his first kiss from Sam because she claimed that his first kiss should be from somebody that loves him. Charlie's birthday is on Christmas Eve, but they are out shopping for Christmas presents instead. He got his dad a Mash dvd of the last episode for the

Charlie's brother returns home for Christmas and he and Charlie's sister argue about their dating life. Charlie's dad can't stand it, so he allows Charlie to drive to his grandparents.

One of the first things that Charlie did when he got his license is that he went to go visit his Aunt Helen's grave by himself.

Part 3:

Charlie went on a few dates with Mary Elizabeth, but it didn't work out in the end. She was always doing the talking and wouldn't let Charlie add his input to the conversation. Eventually, he got fed up and when they were at a party playing truth or dare, he was asked to kiss the prettiest girl in the room. He kissed Sam and everything went down the drain from there. He was told that it was best for him to stay away for a while.

Charlie's sister also got pregnant, but the guy she was with dumped her when she told him. Thus, Charlie went to the clinic with his sister when she got an abortion.

With all of this happening in his life, he started to feel depressed and angry. At the end of part 3, Charlie calls Bob and buys some pot and smokes it constantly. He also has been smoking quite a bit as well.

Overall, not a bad book, but since my friend had begged me to watch it with her, I don't think I enjoyed it as much as I would have if I had not watched it.

He makes up with the group, especially after he beat up two boys that were beating up Patrick. As graduation approaches, Charlie starts to feel a little upset because all of his friends are heading off for college. When prom approaches, it is revealed that Craig has been repeatedly cheating on Sam. Instead of being happy that they broke up, Charlie is concerned about Sam's well-being.
A few days before Sam is supposed to head off to college, she and Charlie fool around in her bedroom. As she starts to mess with the inside of his pants, he pictures the same thing happening, but instead it is being done by his Aunt Helen. After his friends leave for college, he goes into a trance, sitting on the couch naked and unresponsive. He is then rushed to the hospital, where he finds out that he was molested by his Aunt Helen. I do love Patrick though - that has stayed the same. I'm not in love with it but I wasn't either with the movie anyway.
