Doc (docpersona) | 233 comments Anyone else start collecting a series just to have your hopes of the next book coming out dashed as the company either gives up on the series or goes under(I am looking at you Tokyopop.)

I had all of the "Alice in the Country of Hearts" with exception of the last one which was going to be released until Tokyopop decided they couldn't maintain the American manga market. Thankfully the series was picked up again even though it is an omnibus now. There have been many series that have lost their footing in the American market that have never been licensed once more though like "Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase" which had 12 volumes out of 16 put out state side leaving 4 yet to see the light of day.

Oh well. C'est la vie. :)

James | 29 comments well tokyopop pretty much went bust, some how tokyopop Germany survived.

but theres good news, all the original Alice in the Country of Hearts book have been reprinted by Yen press, and the spin of books like mad hatter's tea party and cheshire cat waltz are still coming out printed by seven seas.

Tokyopop flooded the market with crap, then got up set because every one was reading death note, vampire knight instead of priest or chid vampire. in face i can think of only 3 or 4 tokyopop books i liked.

and there still lots of publishers turn out great work yen press, Vis, seven seas, dark horse (west comic company behind the crow and sin city also print ghost in the shell and lady blood snow)

as for series vanishing it it happens in all media, there been 8 seasons of the kardashons yet firefly got pulled after half a season, there no justice but manga no better or worse then any other.

Tokyopop had a decent amount of good titles, they just got lost in the shuffle of Tokyopop flooding the market with everything they could get their hands on. My biggest disappointments were the cancellation of Kindaichi Case Files with just two volumes left in the first series (by decision not going out of business - Tpop survived a while longer), and only getting one of the Kino's Journey light novels translated.

Eat Man is another series I wish we got more of. Viz brought it over long before manga really took hold here and only published 2 volumes out of 19 before canceling it.

Doc (docpersona) | 233 comments Yup that would be the omnibus. Seven Seas also did the Alice in the country of Clover focusing on the Bloody Twins. I will probably donate the 5th volume to the local library when I get around to acquiring the 5 and 6 omnibus.

Yeah I wasn't surprised when Tokyopop burst after having contests to try to allow manga fans to get published in their own series. Also don't forget Vertical Press(Black Jack, Princess Knight) and Kondansha which picked up many of the Del Ray titles(Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. Negima).

All you can do is hope wit hso many choices one of them will try to bring back titles lost. At least with Manga you can get fan translations. I am hopeful Viz Media will be able to continue putting out March Story. :)

My "WHY GOD WHY!!!" series is Saiyuki Reload :'( ONE VOLUME LEFT in Reload :-( Good news... my friend was teaching in Japan and she so kindly bought the 10th volume for me and my best friend, who speaks Japanese fluently, translated the entire volume for me so I was able to read it... but now Saiyuki Reload Blast, the third and final installment of the Saiyuki series is coming out in Japan... and so now I'll never know how it all ends :'( (I do, however, have a friend who lives in Japan. I have seriously considered having her get them for me and making my friend translate them all... cuz darn it I need to know!!!)

There were a lot of series left unended due to TokyoPop's shut down that I was reading. I hate reading scanlations for a variety of reasons but the biggest two is sometimes the translations are horrible and often times the volumes are not complete. They'll be missing chunks or even panels. Plus also, scanlations are part of the reason these English manga publishers are going out of business. It's a shame but it's the reality of the world these days.

But I will forever and always mourn the loss of Saiyuki. It's my absolute favorite manga series :'-(

Doc (docpersona) | 233 comments Saiyuki was popular for a while with having at least two animes put out. Maybe if we are lucky news of the final installment of the manga will cause interest state side. Course I have always liked adaptations of Journey to the West so I am hopeful. :)

I have tried e-manga for a bit but to tell the truth I am a Manga hoarder collecting volumes when I can and reading them before I put them in bins to keep safe. I see Tokyopop was involved in this one as well so I understand. I can imagine this was one of the new manga artists Tokyopop was cultivating but I hope not so someday you can see the rest of the story. :)
