The Giver
question
Predicatble Question, but still Good Topic

This book was written long ago and it's just now becoming a movie. I believe it's coming sometime during the 2014 year and that Taylor Swift was going to be in it. I read this novel twice, and it's a wonder why it hasn't become a movie or a more popular movie before. How do you feel about the Giver becoming a movie?
I don't think that it will translate well. There are some books that are meant to stay in literature, and this is one of them. How will they show 'Sameness' on screen? Will it be shot in black and white? How will they show the character gaining emotion or perspective? Will they implement a soft soundtrack due to the fact that there is no music in their world?
I just don't see how this will be visualized on screen. Some things cannot jump out from your imagination into film. I wish it all the best but I think this will be a serious miss...

The books too hard to show on screen. Its not a kids movie, and alot of people will mistake it as that. I think though i want to see it.
Agreed with Iris. Showing a black and white movie would not work in this era, along with the whole music thing. But if Taylor Swift is in it....that would be kind cool. But there aren't really females in there....
Actually, I was a little surprised when I saw this was going to be a movie, because even though the premise was good, the book wasn't fantastic in my opinion.
I think it hasn't been done before now because there wasn't a dystopian/YA fiction fad before now. It's "the thing" and they're jumping on the band wagon.
Actually, I'm optimistic about the movie. They could totally screw it up of course, but like I said, the premise was good and I think there's alot they could do to expand on it and make it really good.

Okay, warning, I appear to have lost all forms of grammar and proper thought process this weekend...
I'm certain there's a way to do it (and make it magnificent), but Hollywood can have a tendency (in my opinion) to sacrifice a potentially great movie and/or being true to the original story for the sake of a quick buck/attracting a target audience/etc.
There are a couple of problems that they could run into that they might be afraid would scare off their audience (which I'm assuming is teens, as they have a thing for dystopian at the moment) such as the fact that it would be more accurate if it were shot in black and white and was without music until the a Giver shares it with Jonas.
Sadly, it is true that a movie could never completely capture everything that the narrative has, namely the world/truth being revealed to Jonas in bits and pieces. And, naturally, it would lack any sort of inner monologue/thoughts that the character is having. (I've always hated the fact that movies don't have that when they adapt books to film. I know it may be a bit impractical, but I always feel like they lose something when they do that.)
However, I'm trying to remain hopeful that they just might do a good job on it. You never truly know until it's done, right?

There are very few movies that can match the book. There's just no substitute for the imagination. Of course these days of constant visual stimulation some people don't have one, so they wouldn't know!
I have high hopes for this movie. First, Taylor Swift is not a major character. Rosemary is not in the book for a large part of it. Secondly, Jeff Bridges (The Dude!) as The Giver sounds awesome. Third, the book is not very long. It could be well translated. Fourth, they've taken this long to do it, and I hope it is because they've finally figured out how to do it right. Personally, I think I will know in the first few minutes if it will be done right or not. (spoiler coming). It has to start in black and white then we should see the first bits of color in Fiona's hair the apple.... If not, it will just not be right.

I think its in an especially bad spot with YA dystopian movies being all the rage. The Giver will trend toward this type of film I think. I think making a faithful adaptation of the book would be pretty easy, actually, but it would be a depressing, agitating movie and would not be very marketable.
A fantastic book, however, one that truly hooked me on reading at an early age.

I really want to go watch it. The book was incredible and really got me to think about things. I won't Taylor Swift ruin it for me.
