I LOVE the Arcana chronicles. I kind of like the nice guys. In Hunger Games for example I totally loved Peeta because of how nice he was. I don't mind the bad boys to a certain degree but sometimes their characters are so over the top bad and mean I just can't get past it. That's why I couldn't get into Hush Hush for example. The love interest, Patch, was just too creepy for me.

I think it depends on the book and the boy - I also loved Peeta, and Gansey from The Raven Cycle is another one of my favourites.

I'm not a fan of the arrogant/smarmy/angsty/treat em mean type of boys that you see in a lot of YA (Patch is a good example...Daemon from Lux - although he wasn't as bad because Katy called him out on his shit - and Kaidan from Sweet Evil as well)...if they're gonna be cocky and obnoxious they also need to be charming and funny like Adrian Ivashkov or Roth from The Dark Elements - and you could probably put Will Herondale and Jonas from Falling Kingdoms in this section as well. Funnily enough I'm not a fan of Magnus (FK) - he's not ruthless enough for me (see below)...

The best are the anti-heroes who have an incredibly messed up moral compass and blur the lines between good and evil and are only ever understood by the MC, and that's after a long time of 'misjudging' them e.g. Warner from Shatter Me, Aric from Arcana...Seth from Covenant/Titan even though he wasn't the love interest in Covenant (he was so much better than uber-boring Aiden)

I think a good heroine is necessary as well - if I don't like the girl I find it really hard to like the boy (TMI, Hush Hush...a lot of others...)

I think I've gone off on somewhat of a tangent here...

I thought it was a very good tangent. :)

I'd have to agree with you on some of your points. I guess I'm just a bookboy whore since I tend to like most of them. Yes to the guys that are messed up morally, but due to a reason - the ones where the MC is the only one to understand. Loved Aric and Warner!!!! But (a big but), I do enjoy the arrogant, mean and angsty guys IF the female MC is strong enough to give it back vs taking it. Going back to Hush Hush, I think that's why I had such an issue with the book, although I feel like it got better, .... then back to bad as the series went on. But Will Henrondale?! How could ANYONE not love him? **sigh** He's up there for me, with Warner and Aric. ;)

Now Kyon? hmmm, he's so messed up that I want to dig into him to reveal all his issues. Lot's of shock value, for sure, but he can be so tender. I'm loving him... poor Kricket has to choose. I'm only about 60% through but I can't wait to see what happens!

OMG I'm super excited about Six of Crows too Ash!!! Cannot wait for it to come out.

Now onto to The Kiss of Deception total disappointment for me. And that's really frustrating because I'd wanted to read it since before it released. Look at the awesome cover! And the synopsis sounds so interesting. Well let me say that for me those were the highlights to this book! Ugh! I found the heroine to be self-centered and immature. I get that her character is young but still. And the hero or heroes weren't a whole lot better either. The story was rather boring. Even the "action" was boring LOL! The pacing was super sloooooww. Nothing of note happens for over half of the book. Pages and pages of menial everyday crap that no one really needs to read about. Lots of other readers seemed to like it though because it's got a pretty high rating. I just don't get it sometimes. Who knows, maybe it's me but I didn't care for this one at all. Here's my tiny review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Yes, a good tangent. I loved Will Herondale, too. I like Jemma though too and was happy with the way CC wrote that love triangle. With the Arcana Chronicles I love Aric, but Jackson is sort of a bad boy too. In the Grisha books a lot of people wanted the MC to end up with the Darkling because they had so much more chemistry and I kind of thought so too. The bad boys can be good but once they cross a certain line for me, I just can't get into them anymore. My sister hated Beautiful disaster because she thought Travis was too piggish but I actually wound up really liking that book and Travis. I only read up to book 2 of the Kricket series but the way it ended I wasn't so sure about Kyon, but who knows, maybe he turns things around in the 3rd book. I think we all have different definitions of what a bad boy is. Some people say Edward in Twilight was a bad boy but I don't think that's true at all.

See that's what I was trying to say. It's like you're intrigued by the bad boy but once he crosses a certain line there's no going back. The Darkling is a good example. He was so interesting and I kept thinking any second now he'll turn out to be some poor misunderstood guy, but then...no. Yes I was waiting for that too in R&R and was disappointed with how it panned out...perhaps I wouldn't have been if Mal didn't have the personality of a dead fish...sorry if there are any Mal fans out there but I found him to be one of the worst love interests I've come across (right up there with Aiden St Delphi and Jace Wayland-Morganstern-Lightwood-Herondale...but then I didn't like Alex or Clary either...Alina I liked)

But yes, Kyon is just...sigh...although I think in Kricket AAB has got it right with a really good villain /love interest and really good good guy/love interest - I still love Trey but I did find the Tricket action in book 2 a little overkill...there needed to be more Kyon :)
