Books by John Bellairs perhaps? Or perhaps Christopher Pike? Both wrote about the same time and similar topics.

Some other series that were similar to/knock-offs of Goosebumps:
Bone Chillers by Betsy Haynes
Deadtime Stories by A.G. Cascone
Mindwarp by Chris Archer
Spinetinglers by M.T. Coffin
Goosebumps parody: Gooflumps R.U. Slime

It doesn't start with the letter "j," but another possibility might be the Shivers series by M.D. Spenser.

I can't find the titles on Goodreads, but it sounds like it might be *Deadly!* or *Wicked!* which was written by Paul Jennings. They are each composed of six individual books that read like *D.E.A.D.L.Y* and *W.I.C.K.E.D* in the paperback format.
They are morbid but funny.
