SOLVED. fantasy novel about a pickpocket turned magicians apprentice [s]

This is a young adult fantasy novel set in the 1800's about a young female pickpocket posing as a male that tries to steal from a magician and ends up becoming his apprentice. He teaches her about magic and how to use it. They come up against another magician and try to stop him before something horrible happens, I can't remember what though. The girl ends up falling for her mentor but doesn't tell him. I read this book probably 10 years ago and can't remember it to save my life, I'm hoping this description rings a bell for someone on here!

It's one of mine and my sister's favorites! It's a great read or re-read. You should also check out the author's Enchanted Forest Chronicles if you've never read those.

I will check them out, I don't doubt they will be fantastic as A Matter Of Magic has stuck with me for so long. I'm very glad to have joined this group, I have such a hard time remembering the titles of books I've read even when the book was fantastic! Thank you again :)
