Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments Oh man. I just got a notification that I got like 10 books from the library all at the same time. I've been waiting on them for varying lengths of time, of course. Dang! There goes my series challenge. ;)

Footnotes in ebooks really annoy me and I tend not to bother with them as it breaks up the flow too much to have to follow the link (unless I'm reading a Terry Pratchett book and then you just have to read the footnotes....it's like the law or something :)

Same here - but I'm not reading the footnotes in any ebook unless its on the page. I'd just go borrow/buy the DTB version.

Footnotes in ebooks. *shudder*

message 207: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I haven't read very many ebooks with footnotes, but I feel like one of my devices handles them really well. I think it might be the kindle app on my nook HD. (What? O_o)

I actually really like the kindle app in general, but I don't like actual kindles. LOL

ANyway, I feel like the app manages footnotes well, and jumps you back to where you were. Now I'll have to go check.

message 208: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I use my kindle app on my nook more than my kindle too. But I hate the way it keeps count of how fast you read and how long it should take to finish the chapter.

Regarding footnotes I wish the publisher would just add the note next to the * so there'd be no break at all. Like this * (footnote here). It would be so much easier.

Well, my KT is over almost 2 years old. I got it before HD was even an option, lol. Mine handles footnotes in the most horrendous way possible.

These are the upgrades to my KT:
http://www.kobo.com/koboaura#overview ($150!!!)
http://www.kobo.com/koboaurahd ($170!!)

Looks like I won't get one of these any time soon.

You can turn that off... just tap it and it will cycle through a couple options and then go away.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) And YAY! Nienna, I'm happy to have weirdo company. LOL Whenever I tell people that I use the kindle app on my nook they look at me like I grew a second head.

message 212: by Felina (new)

Felina I just started Swan Song this morning. Liking it pretty well so far. It reminds me heavily of The Stand.

I started Olive Kitteridge this weekend cause I have a RL bookclub for it on Saturday. But I'm not really feeling it right now. It's pretty good but I think I want to start Prince Caspian instead.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Kindle app on the nook... it is the color tablet kind or the eInk kind?

message 219: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Its the HD and HD+ only. There was an update around a year ago and now they're run with Google software.

message 220: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yup. That was actually the selling point for me. I tried it in the store, and when I was able to download the Kindle app onto it, I told Thomas I wanted one, so he got it for me for my birthday last year.

message 221: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I bought one for my mom this year. She really likes it (HD).

I'm still not sold on B&N - I've heard rumors they may sell off nook.

I also really like my eInk.

How does your eyes deal with the backlit screen?

message 222: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) There have been rumors about B&N going out of business or selling the nook for as long as I can remember. LOL

But they keep coming out with new versions, and they support them, and I like them, so I can't complain. I'd still recommend them. :)

Yeah, my mom likes hers a lot.

But what about the screen?

message 224: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm not a HUGE fan of the backlit screen, but it's not terrible. I've gotten more used to reading on it, and there are ways to adjust it so it's not so bright...

message 225: by Lee (last edited Jan 15, 2014 08:58AM) (new)

Lee | 939 comments The backlit screen doesn't bother me too much. But if I have a headache, or feel one coming on, it makes it worse. I have a simple touch nook that I use to give my eyes a break. And I don't work on a computer for my job which I know makes a difference. I work with paper... Lots of papers. I'm a file clerk.

I started with the nook when the first one came out and I have too many books in my library to make a switch to kindle. But I've seen the same rumors and yeah they make me nervous. I think b&n will end up selling the nook to another company (my guess is Google) and just sell the ebooks side of things. Just in case I've been making a backup copy of my books though.

message 226: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I work on a computer all day and then I go home and chat with my friends. O_O

I love my eink but I've sorta wanted a tablet. I'm starting to think I should just get a tablet...one day.

I have slowly started getting out of reading on my phone due to strain and annoyance - my Kobo is getting a workout it hasn't had in a while.

message 227: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I had recently read an article that B&N experienced losses last year and didn't do as well as predicted during the Christmas season. They attributed to not coming out a newer model of Nook. But, it also said there were no plans at this time to sell of the ebook business. I really think at this time that is what is keeping them afloat since their stores are not doing great either.

I recently bought a Nook HD during the Black Friday deals and I love mine. I have the kindle app downloaded, but only have bought books so far...not read them...yet.

message 228: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I read on my phone too sometimes, but only in small quantities. It's too small of a screen and it wears out my battery like nobody's business.

I have the Nook with Glowlight that I prefer reading on for long sessions. It's lighter, and the e-ink is easier on my eyes. (I'm on a computer all day long.)

But I like the HD because I can use the kindle app, plus it has wifi so I can use it for internet as well.

message 229: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 88 comments I have the Nook with Glowlight and a Nexus 7 tablet, so I kind of have the best of both worlds.

message 231: by Becky (last edited Jan 15, 2014 01:10PM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) No... I didn't. I haven't purchased anything from them (apps and the like - though I'm sure I would have to then) but they don't have my CC info. I've only d/led free apps and stuff.

message 233: by Richard (new)

Richard (fantasyfangr) | 5 comments I'm in the process of reading Jack Finney's collection of short stories, "I Love Galesburg In The Springtime". So far it is quite pleasantly representative of Finney's brand of nostalgic fantasy. His time travel tales certainly are closer to fantasy than science-fiction as he favours the "time slip" methodology rather than the use of a time machine.

Any other fans of Finney here?

I've readInvasion of the Body Snatchers and enjoyed it.

message 235: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Finished the 2nd Night Angel book Shadow's Edge I enjoyed the 1st. The violence surprised me, and continued to surprise me in the 2nd. But I don't know, I have no problem with violence, but here it seems a bit much.

And who would name an important character Uly? Every time I read it (every single time) I read it 'Ugly'. One of the other characters even mentions it...

Now I'm reading Bridge to Terabithia. Never read it. Never saw the movie. And I have no idea what to expect.

message 236: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I may be experiencing my first slump of the year... I've found it very difficult to get into either Swan Song or Prince Caspian; both of which I am actually interested in reading (which is why I think this is a slump). So, I'm going to try and reboot myself (and help my series challenge along) with an MG read: M Is for Mama's Boy.

I really hope I can complete Swan Song before the end of the month though, so that I can fulfill my January challenge for FoF.

I liked the first Night Angel book, but liked the trilogy less as it became more epic in scope.

Scott (dodger1379) All over the board re: what I'm reading in January...
Finishing "Rise of Empire" by Michael J. Sullivan
"Bad Luck and Trouble" by Lee Child
"Little House on the Prairie" - no comments needed, I'm re-reading the whole series
"Wonderstruck" by Brian Selznick"
"Different Seasons" by Stephen King
---------------------------------
Probably won't finish them all in January but that is what I'm actively reading

message 239: by Felina (new)

Felina I had a short reading slump this week. Well that and being very busy. My order of Howl Moving Castle in audio came in yesterday at the library. When I was there I saw one if those dorky cozy mysteries with a cat being naughty on the cover. I grabbed it. It's been nice to sink into something totally pointless. :)

message 240: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments I just started the second Pellinor book, The Riddle. I like this series, but they seem overlong to me. Just got through about 3 chapters where the two main characters (traveling alone) are not talking to each other and nothing else really happened.

message 241: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (last edited Jan 18, 2014 07:27AM) (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I read the first Pellinor book, and called it quits. I liked the idea of the story and was curious about the romance, but the length and writing drove me crazy.

(I remember one part particularly where they passed a garden of multiple kinds of flowers, and then she had to go into a laundry list of exactly which flowers. I was yelling at the book 'It's a fucking garden! We get it! Move the fuck on!!!')

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I'm seeing the end of the tunnel that's called Swan Song. Enjoying it, it's just taking me awhile because it's hoooge.

I took a mini break and read another of the Seanan McGuire short Incryptid prequel stories. I have three more to go. It seems like the 8 of these together will end up being like one book.

Went by the library and picked up Batman, Vol. 2: The City of Owls, so I'll be reading that soon.

I'm looking forward to reading Howl's Moving Castle in Feb, should be a fun one.

Finished Hereticus which closes out another series (I really need to do the series challenge given that I've started thinking "now I can't pick up a new series until I've got up to date on at least one other" :)

I'm not sure what I'm going to read next. Picked up one of the Laundry Files novellas Equoid to give myself some breathing room to have a think about what I fancy. The pressure is always on on Sunday to find something awesome for the Monday morning commute! ;)

I think that's awesome. I have plans to re-read them all again at some point too. I can't remember if I listed them in my series challenge though. I re-read the first one last year, maybe, or the year before. Very different than I remember from my childhood, but still good. :)

They are on my reread list as well. This was my very first series. I remember being about 8 or 9 years old, riding around with the entire boxed set by my side, in the car. It was baby blue.
Yes, here was the cover of the first one (although I don't remember if that imprint logo was on it or not):

Oh! And I cried when I spilled milk all over them. One of the books was ruined.
