There are a few with a time travel theme... :)Or an Ancient Rome theme...
Also a few with human paranormal crossovers...
A few on Mars...
Location challenges such as:Books where the zombie outbreak takes place in each of the fifty states might be too difficult for a three month challenge, but it might be possible to break it up into smaller chunks and make it a year goal?
Or around the world trip
First stop the UK (read one zombie book which is set in the UK)
Second stop... France?
And so on until you've got a total of 5 books read.

Can it cover more than one category? Why not - I'm sure there are books out there that try to cram as many different themes as possible.
I read your name that way the first time I saw it and it's stuck in my head as Nutella. I knew it wasn't spelled that way but on the iphone app you can't see previous comments when you're typing so I took a shot. Hey at least you are delicious! Chomp chomp ;)
It seems that buddy reads are becoming more popular in the group. How about a buddy read challenge?
The member who accepts the challenge agrees to either, host or participate in ____ number of buddy reads over ____ number of months.
Now Netanella, let's say someone wants to take up one of these extra challenges, where do they list the books and track their progress?

So I'm sitting here driinking my coffee thinking I don't know how to count. If this is a 3 month challenge, isn't Jan 8 to Mar 8 two months' worth of time, not three?
Had to delete the military themed one. Apparently there were no zombies in that book.

Update time! I determined I really didn't know how to count (among other things I don't know how to do), so the duration of this challenge is now 3 months instead of 2. D'oh!Also, I moved "The Killing Floor" from 'military' to 'alien', since DiLouie's zombies/monsters are controlled by some alien spore/mental hive mind. That gives me room to add "Day By Day 2" to the 'military' theme.
And of course, Whitehead's "Zone One" in the 'next great American zombie novel' category. It certainly has literary aspirations to greatness, but I'm not quite sure it makes it as a zombie novel.

Uggghhhh. "Zone One". The first half of that book was so god-awful boring; it took me forever to get through it. What a slog! Picks up a bit at the end, though.
Agreed. I'm at the 33% mark, and Mark and his buddies are still working the 4 zoms in Human Resources. All brilliantly worded writing, with absolutely nothing going on. It's like fluffy cotton candy writing - pretty and sweet and totally devoid of content.
Updated post #24 - Zone One made it above the 1-star rating because it taught me a new word - pullulate - AND I got to use it in a sentence!
Update: 7 on 11! This month's BOTM goes to the supernatural/paranormal category, with the superpowers that some of the main characters display!Zombie Genre Hunt: Ongoing Reading Challege

This is an 'ongoing' challenge hunt that members can undertake in their own time. You pick the start date, but it has to be finished within 3 months.
It seems like our beloved zombie books are always crossing over into other types of fiction. How many different genres can you find in your zombie reading lists over the next three months? (Add more if I didn't hit them all...)
Books read for this challenge may be used in other challenges. Rereads are fine.
Read a zombie book that can also fit into the following genres:
1. The Traditionalist - straight up gory action
2. The Great American Zombie Novel - any zombie book aspiring to literary greatness (think "The Reapers are the Angels", "Zone One", etc.)
3. Military theme
4. Western theme
5. Young adult
6. Government conspiracy
7. Romantic theme
8. Comedy/parody
9. Supernatural (must contain some other paranormal creature, such as vampire, werewolf, ghoul, etc...)
10. Alien/science fiction theme
Have fun with this one, and I really do hope you'll join me!
