Catherine | 1561 comments I'm really hoping I can finish one or two of the four books I'm reading right now. They are all really long books, 500 to 600 pages. It doesn't feel like I'll ever finish any of them!!

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments For those with a long weekend, what are your plans?

We're hanging out at a lake today, and it's beautiful!

message 1103: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments The lake sounds nice! After several very hot days, the weather has cooled off this weekend. Today it rained this morning and now it's cloudy and cool, so I'm just hanging out indoors with the windows open doing some reading. Depending on the weather, I might go swim in my dad's pool tomorrow.

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments Hello all!!!
I just discover that they are making a movie from the girl with all the gifts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1n4v... Any coments?
I love it the book...

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments I don't know about that movie Caro, but I did see the trailer for The Girl on the Train, and it looks juicy. I'm a sucker for Emily Blunt movies though. I think she is just amazing.

So, if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, you are probably dealing with a heat wave. My local library here in Pennsylvania has been packed! How are you all dealing with this heat?

I agree Kadijah, I'm a big Emily Blunt fan too, and the movie does look good.

I tried to spend most of the weekend inside in the air conditioning! But yesterday I went to see Ghostbusters. The movie theater was packed!

message 1108: by Dramapuppy (new)

Dramapuppy | 195 comments I'm ridiculously excited for both The Girl With All the Gifts and The Girl on the Train, although Gifts was a better book for me. I'm hoping Train will be better as a movie than as a book, although my hopes aren't high for that one. As long as they don't ruin Gifts!

message 1109: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5010 comments Now I have a reason to the Girl on the Train a bit earlier. Pushed it up on my Tbr :)

message 1110: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments I am not sure if I want to see the girl in the train... They move it to US! I think that it will loose part of the magic. And the girl with all the gifts was one of my favourite books last year... So looking for that.

About the heat.. Well in Poland the summer has been mild with several days even chilli. But now is youth days in Krakow. So i escape from the 2 million visitors and came to Burgas to relax... And oficina course read :)

message 1111: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments I know Caro, it is funny that they hired a British actress but then moved the location to upstate New York. Weird!

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) | 585 comments Just watched the trailer for The Girl on the Train and The Girl with all the Gifts.

Train: awful, it did nothing for me.

Gifts: OMG, from the first shot of the corridor I was hooked, I wish they'd shown less but that's a general complaint of trailers now.

The Girl on the train didn't do it for me. I recently read the book and was utterly disappointed. Not sure what they will make of the movie.

Gifts: very keen on it!

Cassandra | 5832 comments Whoa, I didn't realize that The Girl with All the Gifts was being made into a movie. I'm so excited.

message 1115: by Eva (new)

Eva | 134 comments Looking forward to the Girl with all the Gifts movie! I was suprised that they already revealed so much in the trailer though!?!
Well, it's a very popular book and most people will know what makes the main character so special, but as I know from several comments here on Goodreads there are still enough people who are really surprised when they start reading the book and realize what's one of the main storylines. I would have thought that they'd be a bit more cagey about that in the trailer as well.

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) | 585 comments I thought that too. I know I wish going into the book I wish I'd known less but reviews on here gave stuff away. When my mum read it she knew nothing and it had much more of an impact on her, same with my partner.

I think all trailers give too much away now though, it's the reason I tend to avoid a trailer unless it's been adapted from a book and I already know what's going to happen.

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments One of my friends is reading it now, and I made her PROMISE to not look up anything about the book or movie until she finishes. She's loving it so far!

message 1119: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments I know I will be dissapointed about the girl on the train, I am already are. How they dare to movie the story to US!!! It kills have of the magic!!!! Is like saying that Dracula was not in Rumania but in LA... Nevertheless I will see the movie.
The girl with of the gifts I totally agree with Kara... The less you know the better... I read it only knowing that is excellent and creepy, and love it. I will also do the same this month with Bird Box.
Movies can ruin the magic of a book I remember when I watched Gone Girl... Good adaptation but to be honest the book is way better and generate this love-hate relationship with the main characters.

Notes aside I want to know something... Here in Poland one of the big movies chain has an offer that for a relatively cheap price monthly (around the price of 2 movie tickets over the weekend for normal movies or 1.5 tickets if is IMAX or 3D ) you can subscribe and go unlimited times, so really going to two movies I already pay for the subscription. In general I go 5 times per month so is way more than pay, specially when is IMAX. I know that UK and France has something similar. How is for the rest of you?

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments I haven't read The Girl with All the Gifts because someone already it away. Has anyone read it that already known? I really do feel like it's lost it's magic.

So, since we are talking about movies. I just watched Room. All I can say is wow! I loved the book, and the movie held true to the story. It was so well done. Especially considering the subject matter.

message 1121: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments Room was by far the best movie I saw last year. The performances were astounding. I loved the book and the movie was just as good if not better.

message 1122: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments I didn't read room. I started the movie and my boyfriend spoiled for me... Told me the major twist before it happen so then told me the rest. Is a shame because now is not point for me to either watch the full movie or read the book.

message 1123: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments I started a new book today because I had some time to kill at lunch and didn't have anything with me to read. So, I used my Kobo app to read a book I bought ages ago. This app is driving me nuts -- there's no way to tell how far along I am in the book. It only tells you how many pages are left in that chapter. There isn't even a table of contents, so I have no clue how many chapters there are. This is why I hate e-readers!!!

message 1124: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments I have a Kindle but I started with the Kindle app in my tablet. That is when I discover I can read books that are electronic. I must say the kindle app for tablets is very nice, also if the book includes it has also the page number and other good options, but if you do not want to buy Amazon products (many people do not like them and is more than fair) You can also use serial reader, it is made to read the classics by small bits and they do not last more than 17min aprox. so it can be a great option for lunch, it also show the parts of the books, is free and I do like it so far. I am starting to re-read Jane Eyre there and it has been a nice experience (but still there is no tablet that will provide me the comfort that my e-reader does). I know that there are some other apps as serial reader but these is the one that I use and can recommend.

Alisia (meniali) | 248 comments I'm so excited! I sucked it up and signed up for Audible and now I am contemplating my first purchase! Decisions, Decisions. I actually already purchased their daily deal which was As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride for $3.95, but I still have a credit to use! My first thought was to start the Game of Thrones series but my library offers that already. Does anyone else enjoy Audible?

I also use audible since a couple of months ago but I do only non fiction books, I did not like that much fiction. The best ones that I had read so far had been the autobiographies. I really love Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir and Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things. I found them a great think and was laughting all the time. I am also trying some other non fiction books and is good. Also very important here is the narrator.

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments Alisia wrote: "I'm so excited! I sucked it up and signed up for Audible and now I am contemplating my first purchase! Decisions, Decisions.

First, I am in love with Audible. I started using it when I was in college because I still wanted to read, but my eyes were exhausted after reading text books all day. So that's how I relaxed in the evenings.

I highly recommend Yes Please and Bossypants. Also Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, The Sociopath Next Door, and Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything. Also, any book you tried reading in paper version, but couldn't get through because it was just hard. I had to read Brave New World for a class, and for the life of me, I just couldn't concentrate on the words, but I downloaded it and listened to it with the book and really enjoyed it.

Winter (winter9) | 5010 comments Audible is amazing!! Right now I'm doing a Polish Pimsleur course so I don't subscribe since the course take me a long time, but it's a really great service!

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments Summer is ending... That means that the big periods of reading start for me... For some reason I can´t focus so much in my books during the summer. I have my periods of reading and I discover that in general I read in the summer... Unless I travel by my own....
Does anybody else have the same problem? That they are seasons that you read more than others?

message 1130: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments I actually think I read more in the summer, especially this summer because it's been so hot. I've stayed indoors in the air conditioning more. And I'll probably get more done in the really cold winter months for the opposite reason. I think my reading will slow down a little bit when fall starts because I'll be watching more TV shows and having less time to read on weeknights.

message 1131: by Imbunche (new)

Imbunche | 156 comments I tend to read more in the summer. In the fall and winter I watch more tv shows and such instead, as shorter days usually make me feel more tired.

message 1132: by Janine (new)

Janine | 1561 comments I think my reading habits are similar to Caro. Generally I think I read more in the cooler months. I do most of my reading in bed at night and when it's hot and sticky out I find it harder to concentrate.

But overall it depends on my work schedule. I've had most of August off so I read quite a bit more compared to the last few months.

message 1133: by Alisia (new)

Alisia (meniali) | 248 comments For those in the U.S. with Audible accounts (I'm not sure about other countries), If The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is on your TBR, it is only $1.95 until August 31st! They have a TON of discounted books right now, lots of good ones but that one is one of my favorite books ever so I had to share!

message 1134: by Sandy (new)

Sandy (scribingshadows) I live in the tropics so we don't have your typical seasons. It's either hot and dry or hot and wet :P so it doesn't affect my reading frequency. When I travel I do read more books in less time because there is so much time just sitting around and waiting so I tend to have about 3 books with me when I am on a trip, some on my kindle and some as physical books

message 1135: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (lamot_amant) | 728 comments Hm, I've never paid much attention to what weather I read most in. I think I read more during the winter months though. Autumn and winter are my favorite seasons. I get nostalgic around the holidays and end up reading whatever books I'd normally be picking up plus I end up squeezing in a bunch of rereads. Like my dad's birthday was in November so I like to read one of his favorite books. I also have a consistent desire to reread or read a new-to-me Dickens around November and December as well as Harry Potter from October - December and I'll usually try to squash in all the holiday books from one of my favorite series, J.D. Robb's In Death, because they're a guilty pleasure and Robb usually does a good book for one of the major holidays each year.

I also just feel better during cooler months even though my house is basically the antarctic year round because I'm in a serious, committed relationship with my A/C. I don't know what makes the difference but being able to walk outside on a cold(er) night really helps with pain and whatnot though so I think I automatically read more/read faster and get to more books.

Btw, @Alisia - Thanks for mentioning that, I usually forget to check audible deals because I'm still new to it but that's been on my TBR.

Alisia (meniali) | 248 comments Hey everyone, I found a fun TBR calculator! It will tell you how long it will take you to complete your TBR list and how old you'll be when you complete it :). It will take me 12+ years and I'll be 42 when I complete my TBR. I'm going to redo the calculation when I purge my TBR of books that don't interest me any longer. Just sort of neat, you all should try it:

message 1138: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments I am afraid that mine will just say give up you will died surrounded by unfinished books :(

message 1139: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments I can finish mine in six years IF I don't add any new books to it. They need to factor that into the equation!! :)

message 1140: by Alisia (new)

Alisia (meniali) | 248 comments I forgot to mention, in an attempt to keep my TBR number down I only add the first book in a series to my list (Well, I try to only add the first book). If I listen to the first book in a series and I like it, chances are I'll be listening to the subsequent books shortly after so I won't forget about them.

message 1141: by Janine (new)

Janine | 1561 comments I actually keep a very small TBR, so it would take me less than a year to get through it, but I add books at a similar rate I read them so it never actually goes down. It always hovers at around 100. Then again, I'm picky about adding books and occasionally go through and remove books I no longer have an interest in!

Twelve years, wow! I'll have to see where I'm at. I often put books on the TBR list and then go through the list again and realize I really don't want to read some of them.

Evelyn Torre (torreevelyn) | 22 comments Hi everyone. I need help with something, and I think you guys will b able to elucidate me. I'm reading Hearts in Atlantis by S. King and there is a moment where one of the characters say:

"More than the book-snobs and play-it-safers think."

What does "play-it-safers" means? Is there any relation with book-snobers? As a non-native reader I got confused.

Thanks.

message 1145: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments Someone who "plays it safe" would be a "play-it-safer". If you Google this phrase, it's someone who takes precautions and avoids risks.

So I can sat that a "play-it-safer" reader would be someone who don't try new authors or genres?

Thanks!

Sandy (scribingshadows) That's a fun calculator. According to it it'll take me 1 year to finish my tbr pile (if I don't add new books to it). Now if I tried to calculate my to-read list o.o.

29 years and 7 months and I'll be 56 and that's if I don't add anymore books to it (which of course I will haha).
