Catherine | 1561 comments That is the best when you can have uninterrupted reading time!! I tried to do that for my week off last week, but other things got in the way. I still got some good reading time in though. Enjoy!!

Yeah, I checked and there was way too many nice options to choose from :D

I love winter but currently I'm glad that I don't have to go out if I don't want to. Currently temperature outside is -15 celsius..

Lucky you! We only seem to get -1 and -2 now,, don't know what happened to real Norwegian winter :/

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments Now we still don't have snow but seems that temperature will drop to -10 C in these days. Winter arrived...

message 655: by Justin (new)

Justin (jbradley86) I've just had a thought and want to know everyones opinion on it. I'm currently reading 3 books now I doubt I will complete all 3 before the end of the year. If I've started it this year and complete it in the new year do I class that on next year's challenge or this year's?

message 656: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Hi Justin, I always count books by when I finish them. I'm currently in the middle of a few as well, and the ones I finish this year will be 2015 books, and the ones I finish next year will count toward 2016's challenge.

message 657: by Merja (new)

Merja (merjafrob) | 488 comments Same here. I count them by the date I've read, not when started. And if I start a book now and finish it as soon as year has changed (for example like 1 am on January 1st), I count it towards 2016 challenge.

message 658: by Justin (new)

Justin (jbradley86) Awesome thanks ill probably do the same give me a head start on next year :)

message 659: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments I do the same, I count the date I finished it, not the date I started it. Some books take me a while so I definitely don't count those until I'm actually done!

message 660: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Hooray! I just cleared almost 200 books off of my to-read shelf. If I didn't recognize the book right away and couldn't figure out why I put it there, it got deleted. That still leaves a ridiculous number of books on the list, but I feel better going into the new year. :)

Anyone else cleaning off their to-read shelves in preparation for 2016?

message 661: by Overbooked ✎ (new)

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 2208 comments Cassandra, I've cleared out mine too, a sort of spring cleaning in preparation of the new year.
Mind, in the last few days I've also added a few new books that I do want to read as part of 2016 challenges but I admit it's a great feeling to have the TBR under control :)

message 662: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments I did that in November and my TBR really got smaller.... I try to do that two or three times a years, feel nicer but still dream when I will have the time to read all those books...

message 663: by Dana (new)

Dana (elkins_88) | 458 comments I've done that as well, although I didn't get rid of many so I feel it hardly made a difference lol! I noticed that I had a lot of repeats, so that helped bring it down a little.

message 664: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments You all have a lot more self control than I do! I almost never remove a book from my TBR pile without reading it. I also have GOT to start getting rid of some actual physical books. My house is out of control!

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) | 585 comments I've cleaned out my TBR too. Was nice to see it drop down so much. I'm going to try and read as much of it as possible instead of ignoring it like I did this year

message 666: by [deleted user] (new)

I did my first huge cleanup of my TBR last month. I had over 4500 books and cut it down to 1600. I did the same thing as you Cassandra, removed anything I didn't immediately recognize as something I really wanted to read. It amazed me how many books I had added without giving them another thought.

message 667: by Merja (new)

Merja (merjafrob) | 488 comments I've been thinking of cleaning my TBR shelf so that it only contains books I don't own. I was pretty afraid that my secret Santa would sent me something I own because my TBR shelf is so messy and I own many books that are in it. But luckily got something I didn't own! :)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Merja wrote: "I've been thinking of cleaning my TBR shelf so that it only contains books I don't own. I was pretty afraid that my secret Santa would sent me something I own because my TBR shelf is so messy and I..."

Merja, if it can help, I have created two separate shelves on GR, one is the "actual" TBR, i.e. it contains only books I own and have yet to read, the other is my wishlist, which contains only books I would like to read some day.

message 669: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments I managed to cull something like 40 books from my TBR last night, but... it still counts over 400, so that's not a huge bite. But it's something!

Now I'm trying to decide what the very first 2016 read is going to be.

message 670: by Kadijah Michelle (new)

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments My book shelf used to be so organized, then I got about 100 new books over the summer and haven't kept up. I should be fixing my shelf now, but I am enjoying checking in with all of you.

message 671: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I have an "owned-but-unread" shelf that I use to tag books I already own. Hopefully I can get rid of that shelf after this year - I'm planning on clearing it out! I realized I prefer getting books from the library anyway, so I'm trying to buy many fewer books (and read them as soon as I buy them).

message 672: by Merja (new)

Merja (merjafrob) | 488 comments I added "own not read" shelf and marked all the owned books from TBR with it. Maybe should also do that wishlist.. Hmmm.. We'll see.

Been knitting today. Making knee-high socks for myself.

Hope you can see the pic.

LOL. I had the same anxiety :)

message 677: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments Most of my TBR list is books I own, and I have a weird quirk about needing to read a book if I spent money on it. Ridiculous, I know, when I could just get free library books!

Ariel (lamot_amant) | 728 comments Happy soon-to-be New Year!

I'm staying in tonight with some hot cider and waging war with this annoying little cold I haven't shaken yet. They always have a fireworks display/NY deal down by the river in this area and I think they'll be going all out because the rain has finally stopped and the river has gone down a bit. I can hear them already starting up with some smaller ones and I'm sure we'll see a few of the bigger ones from our porch.

Does anyone happen to be on QuizUp (the app)? I just found it earlier today and I really like it. Well, at least the categories I've tried so far. I've mainly been sticking with classic lit or literary themed ones.

Does anybody have any fun celebrations going on tonight?

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) | 585 comments I'm spending the night at work. We're playing games and hoping no one will call in. Only three and a half hours left at work and one night of my rotation left! Working nights is the best and worst.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Happy New Year!!! I love waking up on NY Day and putting my yearly goal in the Goodreads tracker:)

message 687: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments Hope everybody had a nice New year day... Today is the day that I set my tracker for this year and that I run my pivot tables of last year to see how all went on with my statistics. I am quite of an obsessive person with that and have an Excel spreadsheet that then I run pivot tables to see how I went. So excited for the new books to discover!!!

Bella | 193 comments Cassandra wrote: "Hooray! I just cleared almost 200 books off of my to-read shelf. If I didn't recognize the book right away and couldn't figure out why I put it there, it got deleted. That still leaves a ridiculous..."

I went through mine and only got rid of 15 books. I discovered something truly horrifying. I only add books to my GR's TBR if I've already bought it, am willing to buy it, or it's available at my library. So, I actually own about 800 or so of my 1200+ books on my TBR list. And the even scarier thing is that I don't put all of the books I buy into my TBR list here. I thought I had maybe 600 or so unread books, but I actually think I own about 1000+.

message 689: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments I have almost the same problem, Bella. My "books I own" list is over 1,000 books, but I know that isn't even all of them. And my TBR list is 827! But my Kindle total is 281 so that makes me feel a little better (meaning, at least that reduces the number of "real" books that are taking up space in my home). I just really have to be mindful from now on about which books I keep and which ones I get rid of. Most of the time when I finish a book, I always think I'll want to read it again someday -- but at some point it's going to be physically impossible for me to do that with my whole collection!

I'm up to, I think, about 13,000 "real" books and a whole bunch of ebooks. My husband got me my first ereader hoping that it would stop the flow of real books into the house. And it has, but not as much as he had hoped. I have an incredible addiction to buying used books and we are constantly getting boxes of them. Or I buy them by the bagful at the library because they're 25 cents for a paperback. We've pretty much run out of room for them in the house.

Voracious_reader | 76 comments If I could "like" your comment, I would. We have a book addiction, as do our two young children.

message 692: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Took a cue from you guys and whittled by TBR from 419 to 349. It's still too many books, but I feel so much lighter now!

I just kicked my list down from 772 to 494. I feel like I've either gone too far or not far enough. Maybe both. In any case, everything that's gone I don't feel particularly bad about, and I'm sure I'll bump into it again one day if I really needed it. That's not including what I have down as bought or that looks interesting in my library though. Might take a look at that second one now.

message 697: by Linda (new)

Linda | 94 comments Is anyone having trouble receiving daily emails from your groups?
I have not received any since before the new year. Dec 30th.
I have email them, they say am the only one having this trouble.
This happens a lot...
Usually , I go in good reads settings, unclick a couple things,
Reclick them and get emails.
But, not the last few times.
It gets so frustrating!!!!!

message 698: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Goodreads notifications are always going haywire, in my experience. I don't get the daily digest emails, though, so I can't speak to that.

message 699: by Bobbi (new)

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) | 628 comments Now that you mention it Linda, my digest emails have been pretty spotty. My grandfather went back into the hospital last Saturday so I haven't really been spending much time near the computer if I didn't have to. Hm.

Book addiction? Moi? Never. *proceeds to hide her two overflowing floor to ceiling bookshelves and the two full plastic totes next to them* Okay, I may have a slight problem, but I'm still not as bad as my mother. She actually had to delete things from her Kindle's cloud because there was no more space!

message 700: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments I actually deactivate that option of the email. I prefer he notification setting in GR. I can click straight there. But it used to work OK....

@Bobbi: Hope your grandfather recover soon... And the book obsession... Oh well.... That is why bookworm we understand the expression "I don't have anything to read " when looking to over 200 books at home and a few others in our Kindle....
