The Book Thief
question
Should I read...or shouldn't I?

I am wondering just how good The Book Thief book really is....I am a little hesitant due to the number of pages. Sure looks like a lot of people recommend it by the number of 4 and 5 stars on Amazon and the number who are reading it in regards to the Friday question on Goodreads..."What are you reading this weekend?" I am not a fast reader...but always enjoy a good book. Thoughts?

It definitely is not a quick read; I read fast, yet it took me a couple reads to get through it. If you are looking for a deep read, however, this is the selection for you. The author's style is phenomenal, and everything about the story is so powerful. I cried multiple times, and I am not a big crier. It seems a little confusing and boring in the beginning, but it becomes super engaging soon after that. One of my favorites, I strongly recommend The Book Thief. :)

It was a great book! Definitely one of the best books I've ever read.
I consider it one of my favorites and I don't regret reading it, even though it took me a really long time to get through it. It's real and raw and beautiful. The characters are amazing and the narration- I had Death's voice in my head. so... yeah, give it a shot, take breaks if you need to, you'll still enjoy it.
Without doubt, read it. It has to most unique literary voice I've read in years.
Granted, the length is a bit of a turn-off, but the story is pretty engaging right from the start. Personally, I'd say read the first hundred pages and let the book work its magic. At that point, you can make a decision for yourself to either continue with the work or choose a different book.
I bought the book as an IPAD download--started it and gave up in disgust...it's an odd style of writing.
The next day, I started again feeling guilty about having spent the money and got hooked! Then I couldn't put it down...
I'm a sucker for holocaust literature so I loved it. Also loved the Storyteller by Jodi Piccoult if you like books about this era.

Even if it takes you a while, even if at first you don't get it, if you read to the end i promise you, you will NOT regret it. :)
You HAVE to read this. If I could take this book, and throw it in every single person's face, that I know, I would in a heartbeat. Read This, Read This, READ THIS!
Right. Now.
Right. Now.
Everyone needs to read this tender, yet courageous book. The story connected with me in the same way, "To Kill a Mockingbird" did when I first read that. Where is God in evil times? God is present in ordinary people when living ordinary lives become acts of extraordinary courage.
This book is simply put one of my favorite literature period. And i encourage people to read this book, really. You may get bored, for the first few chapters with the odd style of writing. But hang on, soon you'll get to the point in the book where you just can't put it down. You just have to know the ending to this marvelous adventure about love and loss and death.
Read it. It's a time well spent.

If you are comfortable with different writing styles and creative language and don't mind dark novels, I would definitely read it.

I have recommended this book to many readers and I tell them the same thing. You have to commit at least an hour to the first sitting. It takes a while to get into the story and to get used to the style of writing, but once you do, it is a sensational read. Everyone I know who has put it down after less than an hour has not picked it up again. Commit an hour to the first sitting, 2 hours if you can, and you won't regret it.

Kathy,
The Book thief is a brilliant book. It is more about friendship and the way it gives the main character a
way to live than about Nazi Germany. I hope you enjoy it. :)

Personally, I enjoyed this book immensely. Number of pages shouldn't throw you off especially if you can take the chance to put it down if it seems too taxing. It is very deep and a "food for thought" read, but be prepared for its twists and turns
It's a definite read. The start can be a bit confusing and might take a couple of chapters to get into the rhythm and flow of the writer/story teller, but it's worth it.

This is a daring novel that does a lot of very creative things with text, including stories-within-stories (I know; it's been done a lot), palimpsests (texts on top of other texts, which has definitely not been done a lot), and a very strange narrator whose perspective is one of the key points in the book. Technique and structure aside, it shows off a young novelist's ability to get his audience up-close-and-personal with emotions, teetering on the edge of schmaltz but never quite going over, thereby wrenching us with some pretty intense and very real emotional moments. This is a solid work of art and is definitely worth the read, 550 pages or not. I wouldn't want it any shorter, that's for sure.

I would recommend this to anyone who values lyrical writing, I thought it was beautiful... I just put up a review on it's Goodreads page so you can take a look if you like. :)
It is a great audiobook! So if you are a little intimidated by the number of pages or even the use of German words try the audio. I loved it.
Yes, I think you should definitely read it. I don't know how anyone can say this is a bad book or boring or unoriginal. It's refreshing because of it's unique perspective & I fell in love with every character. As others have pointed out, it's a little confusing at first, especially if you go in not knowing who is narrarating, as I did. I saw this book sitting on the shelf in a book store & was drawn in by it's title. When I read the description I was intrigued, but I had never heard anything about the book or the author before. I didn't really understand what was happening when I first started reading. The author has an interesting, quite poetic style of writing. Once I figured out who was narrating, though, everything came together and started to make sense. There was no turning back at that point. The story encapsulated my soul. It's absolutely beautiful, and yes, sad. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and best of all it made me think. It's one of the best books I have ever read. I think everyone should at least give it a shot. It's so worth it.
While I agree with Maggie and that I would not read it again I have to say that I really enjoyed this book!!! If you read a lot of comments on goodreads you will notice people hate it, love it or precisely in the middle. I fall in the love category. It's a unique point of view about Germans during World War II. If you love books and reading you can relate to Liesel and her desire to read anything she can get her hands on. You may find it difficult in the beginning but if you do please don't stop. It's a wonderful story and truly one of my favorite novels.
You should definitely read it! Such a great book. Easy to read, because the pages aren't full of small written words ;)

I really do think you should read The Book Thief. It's a very beautiful book and wonderfully written. I know the Pages are a lot, but it's really easy to read because the words aren't that small, and the paragraphs aren't humongous. Besides loving the book so much and every thing, but I love the page layout and how the words are organized and the size of the words, and paragraphs; ) That didn't make much sense did it. But erm anyways, yes i really think you should read it!!
Read it. especially if you like unique perspectives.
I don't like reading long books but The Book Thief is easily one of my favourites. I'm also a slow reader and I have a short attention span, so I like shorter books.
This book is incredible though. It is one of the most touching stories I have ever read...
I just... I can't put it into words. Read it!

Read it. It's amazing. And the chapters are pretty short, so it's okay if you're a slow reader. It is pretty long, but it's worth it.
I am in love with big long books. I feel like when I go to the book store I'm actually more drawn to them than thin books (I tried looking for a book under 200 pages on my bookshelf, it was really hard to find) but I did not like the Book Thief at all. I gave it 2 stars for it's idea but other then that it felt almost boring, but that is just my opinion and I do think that you should give it a try.
Read it, please. You will be touched by the characters and plot. I consider a long book over 400+ pages, so it's all perspective. Spend time on GOOD books that make you think and teach you about others. Too many are reading long books empty of meaning and without any lasting value. I am somewhat selective in my reading, as the saying goes"So many books, so little time!" READ THE BOOK!
I bought this book on Amazon after hearing a review on Diann Rehm one morning in my office. It sat on my shelf for two years, then I started reading it in 2010, put it down for months then picked it up when I didn't seem to have anything else to read, the library was closed and I didn't feel like leaving the house to read right now. This time, when I started it, I couldn't put it down. Well worth the read and the absorption into history.
It's a lovely book, and if you're concerned about the number of pages, don't be. It's not meant to be read at a break-neck pace (like, say, The Hunger Games), but to be savored and enjoyed slowly. Take your time with this one and let it sink in.
For me, it was totally not worth reading it. It got a little interesting at some points, but then it was slow and boring for almost a hundred pages after the good part.
YOU HAVE TO READ IT! It's one of my favorite books of all time (and my best friend's too)! It's just so beautiful... But just to tell you, it had me bawling at the end so if you don't like sad books, that's a warning. The characters and plot are just perfect, and I love the narration. Read it, you won't regret it.
You should definitely read it. It is a great book and the idea of having the story told from the point of view of death is really cool. The characters are great, the plot is great, and it seems to be historically accurate. If anyone found anything wrong with the history, can you tell me? I need to know that for a book talk. All in all, great book! Definitely worth reading.
It really is an amazing book. Very deep and profound; in fact, I think the only reason it is labelled YA is because the focus character is a 12 year old girl. Other than that, the book is very matured and cultured. I'd say read it.
I hated it. I thought the idea was interesting but I grew impatient and bored very soon and disliked some of the characters.
HELL YEAH! GO READ THIS!!!!!
The book thief is my all time favourite along with Harry Potter.

Kathy,
In my opinion this book is just a piece of junk.
The writing is bad, the characters flat and the whole book is full of common places and without originality.
There are lots of better options out there...
