Gerrilyn Gipson | 14 comments I read this (FLAWED) book and I was turned off by the extreme violence against the women in the story and the heroine in particular. It was just too over the top in blood and gore for me!

The heroine is only 18? I love a good dark read, but the heroine has to be equally matched to the hero. Naive heroines (even one with her history) does not do it for me.

Yes, there's about a 15 year age gap. I know what you mean though, we all have little things we like and don't like in our romance.

@ Gerrilyn yeah it is pretty intense. I had to prepare myself for the introduction of the hero alone. I've never encountered a book like this before, not that I read many dark romance.

A.W. I had one of those "Never Judge a Book by its Title" moments. I'm reading My Boo by Sherie Keys I am four chapters into the first book of the series and so far I'm enjoying it. The box set is a free read on Kindle Unlimited. The hero is a Marine and the heroine is an over comer of D.A. I love my military heroes being married to one and the heroine's story I can personally relate to. Glad I took a chance on this one.

Natalie Clem | 29 comments Just read Incarcerated by Inger Iversen

At first I was hesitant, because I find it hard to believe that an educated successful woman would become pen pals with a convict. Turns out she's entered into a program where their identity is anonymous...he's racist and she's African American...I think the author told a wonderful story, yet very believable...GREAT READ!!!

I'm really interested in this book Flawed (The Butcher, #1) by Francette Phal .
I've read dark reads before, such a the Dark Duet Trilogy Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet, #1) by C.J. Roberts Seduced in the Dark (The Dark Duet, #2) by C.J. Roberts Epilogue (The Dark Duet, #3) by C.J. Roberts
it's non IR, but a dark read I enjoyed. So I don't mind dark, but is it a standalone? I hate starting a book, with a huge cliffhanger, when I have to wait for the next release. I rather wait until all books are out, and then read it.

I'm looking forward to Teal's story too. I normally don't like books that focus too much on race, but in this story it was needed. The author didn't overdue it or vice versa...she was right on! Glad you enjoyed it too ;)

message 365: by A.W. (new)

A.W. I totally agree. The race dialogue of the story was written perfectly. So were the sex scenes. Overall it was one of the best IR stories I've read in a while.

It is a part of a series. You can't read it as a stand alone either, it has a cliffhanger and you'll want to know what happens with the hero and heroine. So I assume the author has at least one other book coming out to let us know what happens at the end of Flawed. Beyond that I can't say.

Ok, so I bought it, and finished it about 3 hours ago.Yes, it is very dark & not to mention, twisty... But it is well written, and it definitely worth the $$$. However, some people are going to have a problem with it, and that's ok. Ren | 291 comments So I actually just finished reading Whiplash (Whiplash # 1) by Yvie Towers .

It is a historical, dark romance I believe. It was pretty difficult for me to read. I think what makes it very difficult is, unlike a book like Flawed where we can clearly see it's fiction, Whiplash touches on a subject matter that was very real....slavery. So some of the things that happen to the heroine is very hard to come to grips with, especially those done by her perspective love interest.

Anyway, I think some of you should give it a try if you can handle it. I warn though, there are some very difficult things to read.

No. A thousand times No!

I really do NOT understand this fixation on antebellum slavery in IR. I don't. Maybe my being a history buff and all, but why does it seem authors are stuck on this time period? There's nothing romantic or redemptive about a situation in which Black women had NO autonomy whatsoever. I'm sorry but I just could never get past that, which would ruin the story overall.

This isn't a judgment call or anything, so please don't think it. I simply don't get this. Maybe I would IF there were more IR historical books from different time periods and different countries, so I could pick and choose. Ancient Egypt is a huge mine of stories and yet, where are those books? There were famous African gladiators, soldiers who served with the Roman legions. Traders from Africa traveling throughout Europe. These would make wonderful stories.

I just feel that we're echoing the larger society which believes Black history began on these shores. That nothing happened in Africa until the Europeans got there.

While I understand what you are saying, I don’t think it’s a fixation more so than giving IRR a different perspective. I think historical IRR is very few and far between so I don’t think it’s so much authors not choosing to write about a black woman in other countries, but it’s just untapped at the moment. For one, many authors find it difficult to write for that time period because of what black women and men went through.

I think in that context authors write to give something other than the known tragedies. There is only so much that can be done in this time period without making it historically inaccurate. I think some people read it for the journey that these women go through and in hopes that, yes likely they didn’t get it, but that they can get a happy ending.

I don’t think you are wrong for how you feel because that is why there is a range novels for readers to read, because we don’t all read the same things nor are we able to tolerate the same things. I understand where you are coming from because there are some things I refuse to read. However, I think we can appreciate that authors are able to give readers a wide range of novels in different genres.

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 1216 comments @Ren:

Great points. That's why there should be MORE historical IR written that isn't so America-centric. The ancient and medieval worlds are rife with great ideas, and in the case of the ancient world, racial differences were not like they are now.

For instance, in the case of Egypt or Rome, everything pretty much boiled down to "civilization vs. barbarian", lol. If you weren't an Egyptian or Roman citizen, you were a barbarian. Skin colour didn't matter, because there were dark-skinned Romans and Egyptians. Ironically, the Egyptians thought of Romans as barbaric, and vice-versa mostly because of cultural differences.

You're right there's variety, and while I love a good dark read, Tiffany Reisz being a huge favourite of mine, there are so few authors who seem unable to separate the romantic/erotic from exploitation/shock jollies. Hoping for a happy ending in a novel dealing with antebellum slavery just doesn't wash for me, but I know mileage may vary, lol. I don't care how hunky the hero is.

Thanks for the awesome conversation.

Yes! There needs to be more historical IRR and I really do hope that they expand on it. I think it has a long way though, I think IR in general has a long way to go. I'm hopeful though because I do see a more creativity.

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 1216 comments I'm almost done with Incarcerated. I am really impressed with this one. I can only think of one other IR book that handled this subject matter with a deft touch, and that was The Woman from Cheshire Avenue. I'm even willing to overlook the "dark skinned woman with issues" trope (this time) because the character is so sympathetic and well-written.

Paganalexandria | 4065 comments I just finished Alien's Captive by Jaide Fox . Best thing I can say, the sci-fi aspect made it different. At the same time couldn't recommend it to anyone necessarily either. It wasn't bad, just felt a little undercooked, or something. Maybe because I read so many dark books, find it hard to understand doing captive story, and the sex scenes being this boring. Everything doesn't have to be BDSM, but it shouldn't feel robotic either. At the same time wondering if I'm judging it too harshly. I gave it 3 stars here, but 4 on Amazon. It earned an extra star there for being free at the time.
