The book series starts off with a young man who leaves his family to find gold. His travel was very difficult, by donkey wagon. He makes it to the gold town and meets the general store owner who has made his fortune by stealing gold finds. The young man meets a black man who is his ally. He is left to die in the desert and eventually marries the general store's daughter, has a boy with her, but does not love her. He keeps the child and throws her out. She eventually comes back to him and cares for him in his dying days. The remainder of the series is about his heirs and their trials and tribulations being rich.
