Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments Big night last night? :P
Feel better. I hate that "I'm about to get sick, but not yet sick and can't actually whinge" feeling.

Although if I had to read a book in that state, The Hobbit is a good one.

Sandy, your books sound interesting. You mind throwing us the links to we can look at them and possibly steal them?

Spent part of Christmas Eve at the theater watching the 3D version of the second installment of the Hobbit movie series. Great fun.

The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings series is a great adventure. Hard to believe how old it is!☺

I hope you are enjoying it.

Haven't read it but it sounds as though it would make me hungry! Are you liking it?

message 56: by Almeta (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments Half way through Zone One. Bored. Just read the synopsis again, which promises me that things will pick up. I hope so.

Australia Time is a lot more difficult than Michigan Time!

Oh and guess what finally showed up at the library. Yep, the Zee book that I had wanted to read. :(

message 57: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments *fingers crossed*

And I'm very much laughing on the time. WELCOME TO MY WORLD!!! But this is informal so who cares about the time! Read all the things you need to, Although it's nearly the 30th and I have most of 2 books to go. I think I need to realise it's not going to happen... Bah.

message 58: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments 4am PDT for me, and if I have it right 11PM AEDT for you, Rusalka?

50 pages to go in ZD. I want to go snuggle into bed and read, but I am sure I will fall asleep. Better to sit here at my desk and keep on reading.

Almeta - sorry about your Z book. I took a look at Zone One. Nope - not for me. I do hope it gets better for you. What was the one you WANTED to read? Breakfast time yet?

Sorry to hear about everyone being/getting sick. I am lucky. Unberufen roughly, that means "knock on wood". Isn't reading wonderful?

message 59: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments So check in time (as I'ma bout to crash again)? How we all doing?

Sickies have gotten enough tissues and whiskey to get them through a day of reading?
Judy's right Suzie, this is EXACTLY why you have two.

Those of us not sick, how we doing on whatever the hell we are wanting to knock over in the next couple of days?

message 60: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments 11.30pm but close enough :P

It is breakfast time here, 8:22 am, and I'm going to go whip up a couple of eggs with ham sprinkles and shredded cheese.

Zero Cool: A Novel by John Lange (aka Michael Crichton) is part of a mystery noir collection called Hard Case Crime. The selections are written by different authors, often ones that aren't well known for the noir mystery genre, but well known none the less.

This one, #41 in the collection, was written in 1969...It is no Doorstop, so now what?

Do I let it slide back to the library system unread? Do I pick it up and start the New Year with a book that "won't count"? Do I try to make it count by (right off the bat) rearranging my connections? Hmmmmm.☻

message 62: by Lisa (last edited Dec 29, 2013 06:03AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am loaded up with tissues, antibiotics and water and am working my way through The Ghost Hunters. It is very good so far and I am enjoying it but I keep dozing off! Stupid chest and sinus infection is draining me completely! :(

I hope you are all enjoying your books and that the other sickies are feeling a bit better.

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments Judy wrote: "Esther wrote: "I will start my last sprint tonight. I'm 25% done with my Z book. Go Esther Go."

We're pulling for you, Esther, how did you do?

Still about 300 pages of trade paerback Spanish. So slooooow reading. 3 days to go, probably not going to happen. But I will try.

Sorry about so many of you being sick.

message 64: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I hope you manage it Esther! Fingers crossed for you.

Well I have found brandy coffees and tiger balm has done me wonders today so I have about 50 pages left of The Hobbit to go. I've never read it before and I'm really enjoying it. It's getting me really excited about watching the second part of the film.

message 65: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2556 comments I finished my N book last night (can't figure out how to add link on my phone, but it's The Non-existant Knight and The Cloven Viscount by Italy Calvino. Starting Olive Kitteridge now. Z seems unlikely, but who knows!

message 66: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my last ABC challenge book! I am so thrilled, but too tired to take it in right now. I am not sure I really understand the end of the story either. It definately did not end how I thought it might. Might have to read the last 6 or 7 pages again when my eyes can focus.

I am going to bed for a couple hours. Then, I still need to finish my 2013 book goal.

Almeta - I did not know Michael Crichton used an alias! Hard questions. Do what your heart tells you, but I wouldn't break my links for anything right now. I have left open the door to reading books that "do not count" for the challenge. I have many others to read that are not on my posted lists. It just happens! :)

message 67: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Congratulations Cherie! Go and have some well earned sleep! Whoop!

Decisions, decisions Almeta!

message 68: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4529 comments Way to go, Cherie! I gave up om reaching my 2013 goal. I have about 7 to go. Next year my goal will be less, I think.

message 69: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Congrats Cherie!

I apparently can't read under pressure. Today I went shopping, made a puzzle, baked muffins, cooked, and then read two chapters of my book. I'll try to read a few more tonight.

message 70: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 937 comments Swallowing razor blades today and a massive headache. But I have managed to finish my p book.
Small is at his dads which has been good as I feel do dreadful. But he's coming back here tomorrow. Yippee. Hopefully I'll be feeling a bit better.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Cherie, I'm so glad you finished your challenge!

As for myself, I really don't have any 12/31/13 deadlines pressing, so I'm just reading on. Yesterday I finished reading Allegiant and One Day of Life, then started Memories of My Melancholy Whores, which I finished early this morning. Now I'm about halfway through Never Love a Highlander. That will be #109 for the year, so I'm sure I'll be able to finish with #110 or maybe #112, depending on which book(s) I choose next.

Allegiant (Divergent, #3) by Veronica Roth One Day of Life by Manlio Argueta Memories of My Melancholy Whores by Gabriel García Márquez Never Love a Highlander (McCabe Trilogy, #3) by Maya Banks

Ditto. I just found this "challenge" and I'm in! I want to try to finish reading No Quest For The Wicked and Insurgent. I wouldn't mind making some real headway on Texas.

I plan on staying up to ring in the New Year and start reading my first Chunkster for that challenge. I'm really chomping at the bit for that one.

message 73: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Unlike Cherie I wasted the first 10 hours of this Read-a-long by sleeping. :)

But I've started At Bertram's Hotel by Agatha Christie & Royal Airs by Sharon Shinn for 2 out of the four I want to finish by the end of the year.

message 74: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I've just finished The Hobbit which has made it on to my "favourites" shelf! I absolutely loved it so now I'm ready to go watch Part 2 at the cinema when I get a chance.

Now I'm moving on to To Kill a Mockingbird - I'm already 20% in as I started it during one the Topplers we had but I ran out of time then I put it on the back burner. It's an annoying copy though as it is a pdf being viewed on my kindle so there are huge gaps between each sentence.

message 75: by Almeta (last edited Dec 29, 2013 01:29PM) (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments This little Panic Read-Along is helping, although I must say that I do need a nap. Headed for some warm broccoli soup, which will really probably put me to sleep instead of perk me up.

Finished second YLTO! Alphabet with my Z title entry Zone One.

Moving on to The Black Mountain by Rex Stout, which is the last book necessary for the Around the World in 52 Books Challenge.

These were the last two necessary to complete all my 2013 challenges. I'm going to make it!☺

Still want to squeeze in Snow Flower and the Secret Fan for the YLTO! December group read.

message 76: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 937 comments Currently listening to my Q. It may send me to sleep though!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I'll be done with Never Love a Highlander in 2 hours. I think I'll listen to The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien next. It's read by Rob Inglis, the same narrator who read The Hobbit so beautifully. That will be a lovely way to end this year's reading, but if I do end up with more time, I can listen to Neil Gaiman read Stardust.

Never Love a Highlander (McCabe Trilogy, #3) by Maya Banks The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1) by J.R.R. Tolkien The Hobbit (Middle-Earth Universe) by J.R.R. Tolkien Stardust by Neil Gaiman

message 78: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Well done, Cherie.

Almeta, I ended up reading something entirely different instead. Beauty From Pain

I have given up on ABC and the year challenge as it's unrealistic to be able to finish them now. :( Next year perhaps!

message 79: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2556 comments Took my daughter to museum and finished M audiobook on way home. Had some sleep, but am getting to work now for the night on O book, Olive Kitteridge. It is also my Maine book for Around the US challenge. I will have to review and blog it all after new year...

I haven't written any reviews for last the last 10 or so books because it takes time and I wanted to get my books done for challenges. I'm going to spend a bit of time the first week of January catching up on them all!

message 81: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2086 comments Well, I planned on reading more than I did today, but I did finish one book, Mint Juleps, Mayhem, and Murder, and now on to the next one, One Heart to Win. Hopefully, will have more time to read tomorrow.

message 82: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments Gosh you have all been busy while I slept. Grats Almeta and Cherie!!

Glad to hear some of you are feeling better (tiger balm is slightly magical I think). Hope you feel better by the time Small comes home Suzie.

message 83: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Everyone's doing so well =] I'm 86% through so nearly there. I originally intended to read the whole series, but I really want to sort through last minute end of year stuff and complete week 2 of my online course before the year is out. So I'll just be continuing on with Moby-Dick and hopefully get a fair bit listened to before the new year.

message 84: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Well there aren't a whole lot of hours left of Dec. 29 but I'm just getting ready to join you all in the last-minute reading rush with Mother Daughter Me and tea in my leather settee!

message 85: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments I was looking at end of year things I need to do. Then thought that playing computer games and reading sounded like a lot more fun :P

I am the procrastinator queen.

Good on you for not being one.

message 86: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments I usually am a procrastinator too. I'm always putting things off and instead diving into an imaginary world =D but seeing as the new year is coming up I can't help myself. I'm looking at all these things I want to do before the year is out and planning new things for the year to come. I've never usually this organised =O

message 87: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Dec 29, 2013 06:11PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I'm just now checking in. I listened to Gone With a Handsomer Man on the 6-1/2 hour drive home in the snow today. It was a bit of a harrowing drive, but I made it. I still had 2 hours left on the book when I got home. I have just finished it.

message 88: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments Well. Chores for today are done. Shoveling the 3|~|##} white stuff is not quite done but enough that someone can get to the door. The rest will wait till tomorrow. So i am swithching to toppler mode. Hopefully i will not fall asleep on my book.

message 89: by Almeta (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments Just finished The Black Mountain by Rex Stout, which completes the Around the World in 52 Books Challenge.

Going to bed!

Alexandra (alex2911) | 665 comments Good morning everyone (it´s 7.15 am over here). I am checking in only now. I´ve started The Dancing Girls of Lahore: Selling Love and Saving Dreams in Pakistan's Pleasure District in a last desperate attempt to complete my Around the World in 52 Books Challenge - still about 10 books to go but you never know. That´s what we are all here for, right? I almost did not manage any reading yesterday but took the book with my to the office today and I am hopeful that I will manage some reading as there seems nobody to be working except me :-(.

Congratulations, Cherie and Almeta for finishing your challenges!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I was busy listening to The Colour of Magic on audio narrated by Nigel Planer, after I woke up early this afternoon, and finally finished it. I am currently reading A Killer First Date and have to sqeeze in one more before midnight of the 31st. Unfortunately, I have to go to work all day Monday and 1/2 day on Tuesday.
Good reading to all.

Congratulations for finishing your 2nd Alphabet, and your Around The World in 52 Book Challenge, Almeta!!!!

message 99: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Congratulations Almeta on completing your two challenges!

You're nearly there Esther!

I've just got up and it's dark, cold, wet and windy outside so I'm not going anywhere today! Going to finish To Kill a Mockingbird - I'm really liking it and I've managed to change the line spacing on my kindle which makes it a bit easier to read too.

message 100: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I completely forgot about checking in here yesterday, and today I've got to work and won't be home until about 5:30pm EST. Am trying to finish one more book before the end of the year: Gone which is a thriller. If it weren't for the fact that I woke up with a sore throat and itchy nose, I'd say I'd get it done tomorrow. We'll see.
